Typical Long-Ass Year End Post

Dec 28, 2012

Long post about this past year & looking forward.

Personal

I didn’t set out to make a lot of changes this year, but I’d say they happened. And for the better! My 2012 resolution was to become more self-sufficient. I focused on my own happiness for a while. Thought through what really felt right with me. With “30” just around the bend I was ready to get to a nice plateau. A place where things could feel more effortless.

I can honestly say I’m much more patient now than ever. I’ve even gotten an upper hand on my battle with perfectionism especially when it comes to my home and relationships.

As for shopping, I kept my personal tastes in mind and did very little impulse buying compared to the past. I feel comfortable meeting my 30’s with what I have in my closet these days. It’s different for everybody, but this was of some importance to me actually. It’s a complicated feeling that includes the ideal of youth, one’s professional appearance, and personal preference. This was the first full year where I felt unwavering and comfortable in my wardrobe and it was really rewarding. :deco2:

From personal to blog-related

Early-2012 I decided to become little more private with my blog. I wasn’t really looking for offline attention and so I needed my blog to become more of a part of me rather than who I was seen as being completely. I know the decrease in makeup and outfit photos has been disappointing to many readers. I was torn. Because, though I love sharing those things, I also preferred a little more anonymity than I was receiving. The shift let me focus on posting things I stilled loved though. :)

And instagram, hahaha that really took over for me when it came to personal entries. I feel my instagram was somewhat more personal than my blog for a while because it felt more in the here & now. I think they’re probably more or less the same now.

For 2013 I have a few changes in mind.

I plan on starting the year off with a 3 month Madewell shopping ban. I got a lot of Madewell for Christmas & I have plenty to wear. I’ve successfully curbed my other spending habits this past year & the year before. For example I only go into Sephora for refills or if there’s something very specific I want to peruse. I stopped impulse buying off Madewell’s sales rack (which used to be my achilles heel,) but I need a full break to enjoy everything I have RIGHT NOW. And for Spring I will only need a new top and tank to get me through the season. I actually think this will be a relatively easy resolution. With a few moments of pining.

Secondly for January it’s time to get back into fish & spinach! I feel so fatigued from all the Thanksgiving to Christmas indulgences. I really LOVED the fish entrees I started eating this summer. More protein, more fiber again. Mike agrees which is good because he’s the household chef.

That’s all really. Just doing more of the same. Try to be a bit nicer while not compromising my own convictions. Etc. Etc. stuff :)

You and I both! Even though I get discounts at Madewell and J.Crew, I have put myself on a super ban. It’s so tempting to just purchase everything (even if I’m getting it for dirt cheap), but I know I could use that money for something else in the future.

I haven’t updated my blog in a while for that same reason. I have kind of lost a sense of what I wanted to do with my blog. At first it was about the outfits I’d put together, but now that I have a work uniform, my outfits are just so…well uniformed. I also can’t seem to get myself to post super personal stuff, either. I love your blog so much because you definitely share just enough of your life and you cover so many different topics: make up, fashion, travel, etc.

In fact, your blog and maybe 3 others are bookmarked on my browser, haha! I want to wish you a super happy new years, Jenny! ^_^ Maybe 2013 bring you luck, great health, and eternal happiness!

Ah crap. I meant MAY 2013* not maybe. I need to proofread >_

Saving for the future, yes! Huge yes for me. I can’t even fathom the temptation. Madewell has a sale site/storewide & I lose it so I imagine the temptation you’re facing! Because everything they sell I think “could this bc I new key item for me!?”

I really appreciate your comment about my blog. I know I’ve had this blog for nearly a decade now but I don’t ever feel like “a blogger.” Maybe because I started before blogging was super popular or before blogs had such focused content? I just tend to blog what I like until it’s no longer fun.

And it’s funny you mentioned having 3 blogs bookmarked. OK I can’t believe mine is one of them!! You have such a “quality blog” you know? It always seemed so focused even if it didn’t feel like it to you personally. But I really stopped following blogs this year, especially fashion blogs. Now I mostly just stalk the ones in my RSS reader.

      HAVE A WONDERFUL 2013!!

Your perseverance in not splurge-buying and keeping to your personal taste is actually a huge inspiration and motivation for me!! While it is still difficult for me, and I haven’t quite understood exactly what “my style/personal taste” is exactly, your tips and posts help motivate me to keep a smaller wardrobe that works together~ Key pieces, styles that work well together, etc!! =D

      I’m so touched reading this.

I felt I floundered for a long time after suddenly wanting a change. From late 2010~ mid 2011, I would say. It was such a journey. Most of the time it felt so freeing finding my personal style but there were definitely times I had doubts or had to struggle to “appreciate” certain styles while understanding it doesn’t suit me, my body, or lifestyle.

I will say for me it feels it has paid off. I always feel myself in my clothes and get dresses isn’t a battle anymore. I feel so relieved that some tiny part of my blog can inspire others’ journeys! Thank you & happy new year!

    I wish I could commit to not buying clothes or shopping. ;.;

    Hi jenny!
I’ve been reading your blog for 4 years I believe and I’ve never commented before. I just wanted you to know that I really enjoy the things you share with us on here and I update your blog daily;;; Your change over the years was also really interesting to follow.

So I just want to wish you a happy new year and may you be happy for another year and many years to come!!

This post is very inspiring~ I’ve been reading your blog for years and it’s always been fun to do so! I hope this year brings you more happiness and just about everything your heart desires! I wish you a very happy new year! :)

  12. Ivie says:

Good luck! I hope you do more make up and hair posts in the future :)!

  13. _lyne says:

I like how you describe being on a ban to enjoy everything you have right now. it makes the ban sound a little less sad and more fun. Always good to stand back and appreciate the things that we already have and also hopefully come up with more (creative) ways to mix and match clothing!

You have definitely inspired me to cut down on my impulse buys (cut down and not totally not buy anything at all ;p) and most pieces of clothing that I purchased these days are potential key pieces in my wardrobe that I know I will be wearing again and again. Following your blog is so much more refreshing than following fashion blogs where they have new things for everyday that we as normal humans will never be able to keep up. and organize. haha!

    happy new year xx

I am a new follower but so far I adore your blog! Happy new year and I hope 2013 will be amazing for you!
