I’ve Converted to LUSH Shampoo Bars

Thursday June 04, 2015

Hi. I know I disappeared for a bit, but I’ve been meaning to say that my shampoo world has been turned upside down since I started using LUSH Shampoo Bars.

I’ve been saying it on twitter and tumblr a lot so here’s a real review.

I bought my first one while I was still recuperating from “the injury.” Squeezing bottles just wasn’t in my wheel house at the time. I got the Soak and Float and ended up liking it so much that I bought 3 more versions. Then a few more after that!

LUSH Shampoo Bar Introduction

Now when I find myself going back to my traditional shampoos, even my previous favorites, they just don’t compare. Mostly they all weigh my hair down drastically compared to the LUSH Shampoo Bars. The difference is so great that I never use my old shampoos unless I know I’ll be staying in that day.

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Solid seaweed shampoo bar for shine and body”

This is one of my favorites. Leaves my very thin and flat hair full of volume! Smells pretty good and the bar itself is quite pretty.

Soak and Float

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Sort out itchy, flaky scalps. We’re just going to say it upfront: this shampoo bar smells like campfires, but it is incredibly effective…”

Agreed. At first the bar’s scent was annoying and I left it in a shampoo can. But after a week it grew on me. I even started leaving it out to dry because I enjoyed the woodsy scent in my bathroom. At the time my scalp was all annoyed from being home 24/7 and not being able to do more than just wash my hair. I saw results after just 1 use and by the 3rd use I was convinced this was a way better alternative to medicated drugstore shampoos.

It also left my hair really bouncy and full! More volume than any other bar I’ve tried so far.

Jason and the Argan Oil

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Softening argan oil bar”

Yep, softens my hair up pretty well! Doesn’t add a lot of volume or shine but it smells like their rose jam and leaves my hair silky. My only complaint is I wish the fragrance lasted after washing but it doesn’t.

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Deep-cleansing lemon bar. Attention, dull hair!”

This one smells nice, adds a little volume, and adds some shine too.

Ultimate Shine

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Solid shampoo for hair that shines”
This would be a good one if you wanted something free of fragrance. I didn’t notice too much extra shine but made my hair feel squeaky clean

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “An irritated and angry scalp is no one’s friend. It’s a calming lavender Shampoo Bar that’s gentle…”

I haven’t used this yet! It smells so good and is so pretty I’ve put it away until my Jason and the Argan Oil is used up!

Conditioning is a bit of a factor. Mostly I would use a lightweight conditioner from a different hair care line, or skip conditioner altogether, or doing a hair mask instead. So I thought I’d try their solid conditioner too since I liked the shampoo bars so much.

Lush Big Conditioning Bar

Big Solid Conditioner

LUSH Quote – “For big volume and tons of shine”

I wanted to like this. It doesn’t weigh my hair down too much and adds a bit of shine. But it’s so difficult to use! Especially on short hair. You have to soften it up in the water first, then drag it across strands of your hair. It’s gritty with a waxy texture. It rinses pretty clean but the main reason I’m not loving it is because I mostly condition for my scalps health. This bar does nothing for your scalp. I won’t be repurchasing. Maybe if my hair were longer.

I love the shampoo bars! I don’t think I’ll buy liquid again.

I think the conditioner is just okay…it’s hard to use, and smells weird. I’ll keep it for travel though (I like to travel carryon only, so the less liquid the better).

I kid you not, I bought a lush shampoo bar for the exact same reason. It was so hard to wash my hair with my broken arm and leaving it unwashed for too long made it super greasy (ick)
So I bought a green one with rosemary bits sticking out called ‘Squeaky green’. And it’s so good for oily scalps.
Still haven’t found a good enough conditioner though. :/

OMG see!!!!? Isn’t it perfect for that!? My hair was just icky at the time. Like it’s bad enough you’re injured.

I might get that green one since it’s for oily scalps. My hair gets greasy FAST. Thanks!

Lush products are so good! Did you try their Superbalm? I get eczema and one time I got it on my scalp. My scalp was so flaky and nothing helped until I started using Superbalm. Maybe that will help calm your scalp?

    • jenny says:

I actually have some of their super balm. I got it in a gift box. I’ve used it on soothing blisters and burns! My scalp is fine now, the soak and float really took care of it! My scalp was in bad shape when I was first injured because I couldn’t shampoo/condition properly and brushing my hair was impossible at the time so it was super flaky!

I’m loving your videos so much! And your bathroom with the candles and plants looks lovely. As for the shampoo bars, I’d love to try the Argon oil one. It’s a pity that there’s no Lush shops around here ;w; I think I’d buy bath bombs non stop…

And their online ordering isn’t really great. I wish they’d offer free shipping on at least orders of $75.00 or more! Some sort of incentive ya know? But ordering online with them feels like a punishment for not having a nearby shop.

I loveeeee these little videos you are making!!!! I have the argan oil solid shampoo that I am waiting to try. I had the same terrible experience with the big solid conditioner. It ended up all chunky and didnt spread evenly. I even went so far as to return it!! They acted like there was some secret trick to getting it to work but there really isnt.

    • jenny says:

Thank you! They’re fun to make :). Yeah it’s not like it does a bad job it’s just a bit tricky to apply. Like… too tricky to apply. I heard they’re return policy is good (well they said when I bought my first bar I could return it for anything else) but I’m too lazy. I’m just sing it up and won’t repurchase.

I wasn’t able to find an email address for direct messages on your blog but, I’ve been thinking about contacting you for a while and even though this is a very public way of doing so, I wanted to finally express my gratitude.
In 2009, while searching the internet for info about Disney World, I stumbled upon your blog and really connected with your writing style. My Florida trip came and went and I continued to read your blog.
At the time there were circumstances and events in my life that I struggled with deeply and it is not an understatement to say that the words you left here, on this blog inspired and motivated me to push through.
I am in a much better place now and truly believe that you aided me in the process.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

    • jenny says:

Apologies I don’t have a contact address these days (I get tweets and tumblr asks usually instead) but I really appreciate you taking the time to comment! I’m so, so happy I could provide both a distraction and a bit of motivation (I think that was more you than me though!) when things were low. And to hear you’re in a better place… I just want to say, me too! And I hope it continues to only get better for you! Thank you for sharing this so very, very much!

  7. Dana says:

Can you suggest a conditioner for volume that you use with Seanik or Soak and Float? Love both of those but I can’t even comb my wet hair if it doesn’t have some conditioner in it. My hair sounds very similar to yours- fine and gets oily fast.

    • jenny says:

Of course! A few things I’ve used include L’ORÉAL – Oleo Therapy Deep Recovery Mask, Venus Spa hair treatment, Honeyce’ conditioner, and I think Herbal Essence’s rose hip conditioner would be good too. The LUSH big conditioner is really good except that it’s annoying to use.

  8. Signe says:

How long does one bar of this shampoo last (probably more for you though, since you have quite short hair)? I really want to try it out now and there is finally a Lush store close to where I live! This Soak and Float suddenly sounds pretty amazing!

    • jenny says:

Yeah my hair is so short! It’s supposed to last “up to 80 times” so like 2 months? Three maybe? I would know except I’ve been swapping out between 6 different bars since March! I think 2 months though if used daily. My soak and float is nearly a flat disk and my argon oil one broke in half yesterday haha
