I currently have 6 eyeshadows, 3 lipsticks, and 3 liquid lipsticks from Colourpop. The first thing I ever bought from them was the KathleenLights quad collection and it turned into my favorite go-to eyeshadows when in a hurry. The “glow” color from the collection is pretty much my actual skin tone so I like to use it alone sometimes for a natural bright eye look.

I decided to record the most common looks I do with my Colourpop collection. There are 4 major looks I consistently go for with them. A single tone in brown and a smudgy rock look which both feel very 90’s. Then a fresh bright pink look followed by what I typically wear when attending a Capitals hockey game.

Colourpop Super Shock eyeshadows are spongy, velvety in texture and apply easiest with fingertips. I’ll go over it with a fluffy blending brush to blur the edges when needed. Their Lippie Stix are comfortable and the matte versions last a long time even with eating and drinking. Their Ultra Matte Lips last even longer with 0 transfer. I find they last on my lips about 6 hours with continuous eating and drinking before needing a touch-up.

In the video you might notice that “beeper” dries down to a dark dusty brown. “Clueless” looks similar in the tube but it dries to a more dusty pink shade.

I doubled up my two red lippie stix for a grunge style gradient lip.

Straight Trippin from the throwback collection is a bit of a miss for me. It just doesn’t blend as well as the others. So I only use it for messy, undone looks.

I wear a liquid lipstick to games because touch-ups usually mean missing gameplay and with all the food and constant soda sipping even my matte lipsticks were failing me. I always wear a red lip there so I got Creeper specifically for wearing to games and it lasts the entire night.

I usually wear a primer under the shadows but I’ve worn “glow” and “cornelious” without primer a bunch of times and never noticed any creasing (and shadows usually crease badly on my lids.)

I find the texture of the shadows really easy for hooded eye application too. Where powder shadows can be a bit tricky, especially without the right brush, these shadows can be swept over the fold without dragging. This is a huge benefit for me because I have very hooded and plump lids and sometimes getting color to extend past the crease takes so much effort with powder shadows.

Colourpop has just been my go-to splurge for whenever I’m feeling like I want a new eye or lip color. It’s affordable, cruelty-free, LA made, and the quality is good for the price.

Blizzard Conditions http://sushi-cat.net/2016/01/27/blizzard-conditions/ http://sushi-cat.net/2016/01/27/blizzard-conditions/#comments Thu, 28 Jan 2016 02:03:01 +0000 jenny http://sushi-cat.net/?p=5299

The east coast got hit with a blizzard over the entire weekend which led to a lot of time at home shoveling and being bored. We attempted to walk around the neighborhood but still most of it was buried under 2 feet of snow and we didn’t get very far. I’ve been working at home and cooking in every night. Which is good! But my food reserves are starting to get low.

To pass the time over the weekend I made a quick “snowday makeup” video using mostly creamy products. The air is so dry I’ve been avoiding most powders since last week. So there’s no real base makeup to this just color points. Also I cut my hair last week…

Yeah, makeup + snow does seem a bit pointless but at the very least I need something protecting my lips at all times. I like Ritual de Fille’s cream blushes because they’re hydrating the way a chapstick seems hydrating. It feels like there’s a layer of protection that keeps my cheeks from drying out and the L’Oreal Lumi Illuminator is very moisturizing and soft.

I used Milani’s new oil treatment in Rosehip over a few touches of Colourpop’s Fetch. The Milani oil is so hydrating. My lips always look great when it’s on and it’s not one of those lip treatments that leaves your lips feeling worse when not wearing it. I can really tell a difference since picking this up.

I’ve done a bad job at trying to beat the dry winter air this year and I’m paying dearly for it. I should have switched to a moisturizing hand soap sooner. Should have switched off of matte lipsticks and onto lip treatments sooner. Should have done a lot of things sooner. Now I’m completely out of my 25% shea butter body lotion until I can get out to the store. Might try to remember to use some coconut oil in the shower tonight to save my skin until I can restock on my lotion.

New Year’s Day – Get Ready With Me http://sushi-cat.net/2016/01/02/new-years-day-grwm/ http://sushi-cat.net/2016/01/02/new-years-day-grwm/#comments Sat, 02 Jan 2016 23:29:19 +0000 jenny http://sushi-cat.net/?p=5257 Yesterday I thought it would be fun to record my makeup routine as I got ready for a day of watching The Winter Classic and running a few errands. Very low-key holiday plans so very simple makeup to match. I used about 3 separate highlighting products because all I wanted was glowing light skin.

Rituel de Fille Night Visions http://sushi-cat.net/2015/09/16/rituel-de-fille-night-visions/ http://sushi-cat.net/2015/09/16/rituel-de-fille-night-visions/#comments Wed, 16 Sep 2015 22:10:10 +0000 jenny http://sushi-cat.net/?p=5185

Last month I received the new Night Visions collection from Rituel de Fille. It contained a pale pink eyeshadow and a deep plum lipstick. This is the first time I tried their “eye soot” and it’s somewhere in between a powder and cream so very aptly name. It’s a subtle shimmer that I’ve been wearing when I only want a hint of color that’s quick and easy to apply. The lipstick is the opposite of subtle. It’s bold and deep. I wear it over my NARS matte lip pencil in Cruella. The color comes out nicely when paired with the red plus it adds moisture to the matte NARS formula.

I really liked how this look turned out. I posted a pic on Instagram when I was recording some of the video and it just looks so 90’s grunge which is where my head is totally at this fall.

ARTIST TOUCH LIPSTICK OR201

I was familiar with THEFACESHOP brand through online shops and beauty reviews but I don’t recall ever using any of their products until now. I stumbled upon a THEFACESHOP while in Ottawa and bought up a ton of things! Actually, so much that I’m not going to list everything individually.

I’m currently avoiding oils and collagen in any long term skincare products so I skipped many of their skin care sets. Almost everything has collagen in it right now.

I picked up their Blemish Zero products and a ton of face masks. The Blemish Zero looked a lot like the Clinique Acne line I’ve used for years but when comparing the ingredients THEFACESHOP has aloe and less ingredients including peppermint extract which can be irritating to skin.

The Volume My Lips glosses are my favorites. They last and last and don’t feel tacky at all. I was so impressed with the fuchsia one that I went back to buy the rest of them!

The Aqua Tint Jelly is gorgeous but the taste is a bit off-putting. It’s very artificial like the taste of plastic. The Milky Moisture Tint and the Marker Aqua Tint both had artificial tastes as well. The color is excellent though.

Branching Out with Candles http://sushi-cat.net/2015/08/06/branching-out-with-candles/ http://sushi-cat.net/2015/08/06/branching-out-with-candles/#comments Thu, 06 Aug 2015 18:15:29 +0000 jenny http://sushi-cat.net/?p=5142

So for many many years I only bought Bath & Body Works candles. The 3-wick ones because nothing else was strong enough for the open design of my house. But that also meant stalking the store for their 2 for $22 sale over and over coupled with their limited fragrance selection. After receiving some candles from Catbird as gifts I started shopping around for woodsy-based candles and saw Target had gotten these large, inexpensive, soy candles in simple glass jars.

The black orchid and amber is fantastic. If you’ve ever liked those woodsy teakwood candles found at Madewell (or UO) this is 3 times in size and easily the same price or cheaper. It fills a large room with fragrance as well.

The sparkling yuzu is nice but subtle. I was surprised to see yuzu as a fragrance but it’s really more mellowed in this candle than I was hoping. Probably wouldn’t get this one again.

Also I’m not usually a fan of Yankee Candle except for the fresh cut roses. It has a really nice pure rose fragrance. No musk or added florals just roses.

Lastly I picked this one up at Anthropologie on clearance. It has a nice marine fragrance and I like the design so much I might keep it for holding tea light candles.

I’ve Converted to LUSH Shampoo Bars http://sushi-cat.net/2015/06/04/ive-converted-to-lush-shampoo-bars/ http://sushi-cat.net/2015/06/04/ive-converted-to-lush-shampoo-bars/#comments Thu, 04 Jun 2015 18:45:35 +0000 jenny http://sushi-cat.net/?p=5023 Hi. I know I disappeared for a bit, but I’ve been meaning to say that my shampoo world has been turned upside down since I started using LUSH Shampoo Bars.

I’ve been saying it on twitter and tumblr a lot so here’s a real review.

I bought my first one while I was still recuperating from “the injury.” Squeezing bottles just wasn’t in my wheel house at the time. I got the Soak and Float and ended up liking it so much that I bought 3 more versions. Then a few more after that!

LUSH Shampoo Bar Introduction

Now when I find myself going back to my traditional shampoos, even my previous favorites, they just don’t compare. Mostly they all weigh my hair down drastically compared to the LUSH Shampoo Bars. The difference is so great that I never use my old shampoos unless I know I’ll be staying in that day.

Seanik

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Solid seaweed shampoo bar for shine and body”

This is one of my favorites. Leaves my very thin and flat hair full of volume! Smells pretty good and the bar itself is quite pretty.

Soak and Float

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Sort out itchy, flaky scalps. We’re just going to say it upfront: this shampoo bar smells like campfires, but it is incredibly effective…”

Agreed. At first the bar’s scent was annoying and I left it in a shampoo can. But after a week it grew on me. I even started leaving it out to dry because I enjoyed the woodsy scent in my bathroom. At the time my scalp was all annoyed from being home 24/7 and not being able to do more than just wash my hair. I saw results after just 1 use and by the 3rd use I was convinced this was a way better alternative to medicated drugstore shampoos.

It also left my hair really bouncy and full! More volume than any other bar I’ve tried so far.

Jason and the Argan Oil

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Softening argan oil bar”

Yep, softens my hair up pretty well! Doesn’t add a lot of volume or shine but it smells like their rose jam and leaves my hair silky. My only complaint is I wish the fragrance lasted after washing but it doesn’t.

Montalbano

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Deep-cleansing lemon bar. Attention, dull hair!”

This one smells nice, adds a little volume, and adds some shine too.

Ultimate Shine

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “Solid shampoo for hair that shines”
This would be a good one if you wanted something free of fragrance. I didn’t notice too much extra shine but made my hair feel squeaky clean

Lullaby

Lush Shampoo BarLUSH Quote – “An irritated and angry scalp is no one’s friend. It’s a calming lavender Shampoo Bar that’s gentle…”

I haven’t used this yet! It smells so good and is so pretty I’ve put it away until my Jason and the Argan Oil is used up!

Conditioning

Conditioning is a bit of a factor. Mostly I would use a lightweight conditioner from a different hair care line, or skip conditioner altogether, or doing a hair mask instead. So I thought I’d try their solid conditioner too since I liked the shampoo bars so much.

Lush Big Conditioning Bar

Big Solid Conditioner

LUSH Quote – “For big volume and tons of shine”

I wanted to like this. It doesn’t weigh my hair down too much and adds a bit of shine. But it’s so difficult to use! Especially on short hair. You have to soften it up in the water first, then drag it across strands of your hair. It’s gritty with a waxy texture. It rinses pretty clean but the main reason I’m not loving it is because I mostly condition for my scalps health. This bar does nothing for your scalp. I won’t be repurchasing. Maybe if my hair were longer.

Rituel de Fille Cream Blush Review http://sushi-cat.net/2015/05/04/rituel-de-fille-cream-blush-review/ http://sushi-cat.net/2015/05/04/rituel-de-fille-cream-blush-review/#comments Mon, 04 May 2015 23:46:09 +0000 jenny http://sushi-cat.net/?p=4965 I really loved the first Rituel de Fille Inner Glow Cream Blush I got as a gift in early December. I hadn’t used a cream blush in a while but using powders + the winter chill, for my skin, it just felt too drying.

I was obsessed with moody plum shades and Rituel de Fille’s “Lovesick” was a perfect winter cheek with pigment that easily lasted through snowy walks and freezing winds. Dab a little on the cheeks, paired with a shimmering eyeshadow, and some chapstick for the lips, and that was my daily winter routine for quite a long time!

Then I was asked last month about how I was liking the blush and I realized it had become my favorite and I wanted more…

4 Rituel de Fille cream blushes

It was difficult to choose which shades I wanted. Outside of the official swatches there was little reviewed about them. Usually I don’t feel compelled to review any new makeup because there’s usually already 50 other blogs with swatches and thoughts and nice photos. Rituel de Fille didn’t seem to have as much of a presence unfortunately. So I decided I’d try my best at putting a review together for anyone that may be interested in these cream blushes. It’s my first swing at a video review so bare with me.

Inner Glow Cream Blush in Envious, Lovesick, Spellbound, and Rapture.

Rituel de Fille Inner Glow Cream Blush

Pros
Buildable pigments
Long lasting
Simple natural ingredients and cruelty-free
Fragrance free
Every shade is cheek, eye and lip safe
Captivating sleek packaging

Cons
Takes a few practice runs to master application

What I like about Rituel de Fille’s cream blush is how bare-bones they are with ingredients. There’s nothing extra. No fillers and no synthetic dyes or fragrance. It’s free from paraben, sulfate, phthalate, and cruelty. And even on my very acne-prone skin it hasn’t caused a single pimple. Not even questionably. Some cream blushes make me think, “Oh, is this pimple from the blush? I dunno, I dunno.” But Rituel de Fille hasn’t given me a single skin woe to question.
