Surprise! You Are You.

Friday August 01, 2008

This is an entry more personal than usual. Introspective and open about “who is Jen-sama… really?” Well, maybe not really. It’s really more who I am with my career… :good: Ya know~ “at the office.”

BUT if you usually come here for lovely photos & magazine clippings you might want to skip over this self-indulgent new age analysis post. Instead, please to enjoy my pillow kitty Blobbie as he tries to mate with my scanner. :driftingoff:

Last May (2007) I took the test known as Strengths Finder for work. Basically this is a work oriented self analysis that helps reveal out of 34 strengths which are your TOP 5 STRENGTHS

Last year I was happy with my strengths. They described me perfectly and helped me discover that things I thought were weaknesses, holding me back at work, were truly strengths. FANTASTIC, GREAT! So, I just retook it for this year’s office retreat. Shockingly… I had 4 new strengths. And after I read the description (which by the way is me to the core) I was surprised.

Others have retaken it & gotten a few new strengths while some have retaken it and gotten the same exact strengths again.

It doesn’t really matter what I got last year. I’m still THAT person too, but my new strengths really do sound more true to who I am now. I was a bit embarrassed. My “strengths” all made me sound cold and methodical! ROBOT JEN! A bit of a loner who doesn’t like working in groups and doesn’t care if people like them (me.) I quote:

“If some people don’t like you because you are not as effusive as others, then so be it. For you, life is not a popularity contest.”

Who is this person!? Not me!? I wear my heart on my sleeve, right? This person… this person I would like to be though… though… as I thought, “This past year… I really haven’t been so emotionally affected by others’ views of me or my actions as much… I’ve been able to coast along through it. Even when the most obvious of adversaries have tried to rock my boat.”

And at the beginning of 2008… I told myself, “I want to become stronger. I no longer want to do things I DON’T want to do (when freedom of choice is there) and when I say “I don’t care what they think,” I want to mean it. Because before I’d say it, but still feel the sting. But honestly, now. I don’t. And this… THIS IS POSITIVE FOR ME! I’m much happier now. This year…, 2008… I feel new and happy and strong. I lead my life rather than being pushed around by it.

Of course more than just THIS came out of this analysis. But this realization rang the loudest. And a lot of the analysis really seemed more work-oriented this time. Last time my outcomes seemed both work oriented and A LOT of personal/at home oriented.

THE RESULTS

CONSISTENCY

People who are especially talented in the Consistency theme are keenly aware of the need to treat people the same. They try to treat everyone in the world with consistency by setting up clear rules and adhering to them.

CONTEXT

People who are especially talented in the Context theme enjoy thinking about the past. They understand the present by researching its history.

DISCIPLINE

People who are especially talented in the Discipline theme enjoy routine and structure. Their world is best described by the order they create.

DELIBERATIVE

People who are especially talented in the Deliberative theme are best described by the serious care they take in making decisions or choices. They anticipate the obstacles.

HARMONY

People who are especially talented in the Harmony theme look for consensus. They don’t enjoy conflict; rather, they seek areas of agreement.

and if you’re not already completely bored out of your skull from reading this psycho-long entry…

Some other new realizations that rang true and are quite the “new me.” …

“Your world needs to be predictable. It needs to be ordered and planned. So you instinctively impose structure on your world. You set up routines. Your dislike of surprises, your impatience with errors, your routines, and your detail orientation don’t need to be misinterpreted as controlling behaviors that box people in.”

★☆★☆★☆

“Balance is important to you. You are keenly aware of the need to treat people the same”
★☆★☆★☆

“You look back. You look back because that is where the answers lie. You look back to understand the present. From your vantage point the present is unstable, a confusing clamor of competing voices.”
★☆★☆★☆

“You are careful. You are vigilant. You are a private person. You know that the world is an unpredictable place. Everything may seem in order, but beneath the surface you sense the many risks. Rather than denying these risks, you draw each one out into the open. Then each risk can be identified, assessed, and ultimately reduced. Thus, you are a fairly serious person who approaches life with a certain reserve.”
★☆★☆★☆

“You look for areas of agreement. In your view there is little to be gained from conflict and friction, so you seek to hold them to a minimum. When you know that the people around you hold differing views, you try to find the common ground. You try to steer them away from confrontation and toward harmony. In fact, harmony is one of your guiding values.”
