Honestly

Friday February 20, 2015

Google “Blogs are dead” and you’ll find dozens of articles that reminisce and lament on the fact that blogs, indeed, are past their prime. As for someone who started blogging in 2001, and doesn’t consider herself “a writer,” I feel it’s more of a full-circle effect. For my blog it’s a keepsake. The guilt that used to nag me when I didn’t update isn’t there anymore. But the thought, “what should I do with my blog” does come to mind.

A lot of Bloggers use Instagram more heavily now.

I’ve all but moved to my Tumblr. I’m there almost daily. I fill it with hockey, feminism, aesthetic”ness”, rants, and humor that wouldn’t be humor outside of Tumblr. Because I can update that from my phone Easily.

Not to say I can’t blog here from my phone, but it’s more cumbersome. And my phone makes images look better than maybe they really are. A few times I’ve blogged from my phone I’ve gotten, “these photos suck” comments and when I’d check on a computer, they really did.

I post things as I please. I sort of want it Mart magazine inspired. Especially since most days I put much of my efforts into cooking, house keeping, and whatever, working I suppose! I honestly don’t know what I do these days okay, I just know I’m busy.

I just know that “taking outfit snaps” requires me to stop what I’m doing, try to find decent lighting, make myself later for something than I want to be, ect. I put effort into what I buy, what I have hanging in my closet, enough so that I usually love what I’m wearing. That was the point of the past 2+ years right? Getting my clothes into a tidy capsule that getting dressed would be both easy and a reflection of who I was that day. And I’ve achieved that. So maybe that’s why sharing outfits seems a bit boring to me now.

I also don’t read blogs very often. And if I do it’s of my long-time internet pals.

And I know I’ve said similar things like this before. I still often get the “I miss your blog” comments and I truly appreciate those, I do, because… I miss it too. I miss those 2009 days full of countless blogs and 100+ comment conversations! That shit was fun! But that’s nostalgia and things change, it’s inevitable, and that keeps things from getting too boring. So if you need me, like really need me, I’m usually on Tumblr or Instagram. ;)

I’m planning to post some recipes soon too!

I actually noticed a renaissance of physical journaling, memory keeping and scrapbooking (in its Project Life) incarnations lately. I think it’s because blogging has been commercialized that it turned people off, or it has become difficult and distant, as you’ve mentioned. People look for other places to share now. Very interesting.

I look forward to the Mart-like content :D

Hmmmm good point! I definitely didn’t journal much during the years I blogged DAILY. I actually journal on & off digitally for myself starting about a year ago. I think so too. The hyper-commercialization of blogging could feel so suffocating at times! And it became less about finding peers and more about gettin’ comments to show sponsors.

i like your current minimalist style blogging as much as your old style tho. you are still my fav blogger c:

Blogging definitely used to feel a lot easier to do than it does now. And that there are so many other options and communities now. But maybe that’s just how time changes. There was the livejournal days. The MySpace. The Xanga. I guess it really is shifting towards tumblr, even though I can’t seem to get in the habit of posting on it.

However I do look forward to your recipe posts because they always seem so easy and doable. :D

Xanga!!! I forgot about that! Yeah things are always changing especially online. For a long time I felt my domain was like an anchor for all those other accounts but these days they definitely feel separate and my blog is probably at the bottom of my favs list :3.

yeah . . . viva tumblr, i guess! haha. it’s so much easier.

    Hi Jenny!
I just wanted to say I’m a lurker who has followed your blog for years (and more recently, Tumblr). I do love it, but I understand the troubles and concerns you have over blogging. Just wanted to say that I’m looking forward to any content you post going forward no matter how infrequently it may be posted! Mart-inspired posts sound great!

    • jenny says:

Ah thank you. That’s definitely my thought going forward. The infrequency of posting, etc. I just tend to put a lot of what I used to put on my blog on my tumblr or Instagram now.

I’ve also noticed the big shift and change to different type of blogging, mainly being through photos. I miss reading the “old” sort of blog posts but I find it more easy to be inspired by people’s photography style and fashion. Personally I just use my blog to expand on what I post on instagram xD

I still enjoy looking at your posts even if it has shifted to instagram and tumblr!

    Hey Jenny!

I discovered your blog years ago when I was first getting into japanese culture and it fed my love for japanese magazines! Although I started commenting recently, I also just wanted to say that I really like the curated look and feel of your blog and its content and I am down for some recipes!

    Best,

    Vanessa

You’ve just summed up everything I feel about my blog, too. I can’t get rid of it, I keep going back to it, I want to update more, but there never seems to be enough time and always a million other things to do first. I think it must be our generation. We all ran blogs and loved them when we had the time, now we’ve grown up and adult life has taken over a bit. And the generation who came behind us have latched onto Tumblr, etc., instead and so blogs are probably dying back a bit now. It’s a shame cos I really enjoy blogging when I get the time!

As much as I love tumblr, the one downside (in my opinion) is there’s no real commenting feature. A “heart” seems so unpersonal to me! Every once in a while somebody sends a message, but that happens to rarely in my case to make give tumblr that nice community feel you get with blogging!

Looking forward to those recipes though, the food you post always looks scrumptious!

    • Sarita says:

omg I should really proofread before hitting submit….

      • jenny says:

I think that’s what drew me to Tumblr though back in 2009 to begin with. When commenting was at an all time high and so were hate comments. It was the only social media that made it difficult to leave flippant ranting comments on something. Of course I had my ask turned off for YEARS back then too!

  10. Jenn says:

i know how it feels to get constant comments on what you posted! i didn’t blog at least until 2010, but before that i was on polyvore a lot and i used to make quite a lot of friends and get tons of comments, whether they’re randomly or cohesive with what i posted there. i enjoy each one nonetheless! but now it’s getting really quiet i notice, i don’t get comments anymore. now i have instagram but most of the time people don’t leave comments that triggered conversation, they’re just mandatory……

I remember your blog in “the old days”, with soooo many cute Japanese stuffs (I forgot the name, but it looks like a turtle with moving head as if enjoying the sun… (?) XD), emoticon (!), and your knitting blog :D 2007-2009 was blogging heyday, methink. When blogs with anime/manga/cute layout and pastel colors and random notes. Nowadays, most of the blogs are minimalistic and using default templates — it’s not a bad thing, tho (me myself is using templates XD) and most of us don’t have the energy and time to design blog layout; especially with many blogging platforms are now having certain defaults which make it slightly more difficult to tinker with — but I should admit that I love it whenever I can find some cute blogs out there.

I have the same situation; I do have a blog but I didn’t update it as regularly as it used to be — yet I can’t stay away from it. I think what makes blogging is slowing down right now is the people/community (?) I mean, on Tumblr and/or IG we can see people’s posts and statuses; while blogging… Not so. Unless we use some kind of RSS feeds; and we can’t automatically reblog or adding comments. And blogging app isn’t as massive as social media apps. I use WordPress for iOS for blogging and it’s pretty nice; but I don’t use it as heavy as, say, Tumblr or IG.

    Ergh, sorry for the long (2 paragraphs) rant ^^;

I love how your blog has evolved! I say keep posting whatever makes you happy! if its a random recipe or a random outfit snap or a random grainy ass picture of your effing eyeball I say POST IT!!! This is your space to do whatever you want. And I for one will continue to read whatever you put.
