Currently Obsessing over Madewell

Oct 05, 2011

Ever since visiting their Georgetown store a few weeks ago I’ve been obsessed with Madewell.

Well, ACTUALLY, I first noticed their ads covering the construction of a new shop closer to where I live. I thought, “Oh, I should check them out!”

I thought I remembered them having a shop in Georgetown & sure enough there it was. I tried on a few things there but the never ending issue of wanting new things but also wanting money in my pocket prevented me from making a purchase. Since then the new one has opened & I keep walking in and feeling up all the racks haha! I keep telling myself I have something sorta-but-not-really similar at home already. I think I’ll end up buying something from there soon though. I’m going to keep an eye out for sales.

Karme and I keep talking about them nonstop though! So every day I’m on their website. There are just so many solid basics that can be worked into a lot of different looks throughout seasons~ So here’s a sorta inspo/wishlist/type deal…

An ad for their Alexa Chung line. Admittedly I know of her but I don’t really follow her per se. She just keeps showing up in brands I like, haha. I finally Wiki’d her and lol’d that we’re the same age! Anyway the ad is lovely. LOVE LOVE the outfit at the end

watch on youtube

Yeah I showed that 1 dress like 3 times because I loooooove it.

  1. i hear they’ve really nice jeans x_x so sad they don’t have a store in toronto…

    • jenny says:

Yeah they have a pretty extensive jeans selection. Like a denim bar.

For some reason (though I’m sure there’s a reason) I have more Madewell stores in my tri-state area than any other location in the US.

i love these!! i’ve never paid much attention to madewell before but now just browsing through the website there’s so much that i want! especially the things from alexa chung’s collab… LOVE. why do such cute clothes always have to be so expensive, though. these prices will destroy me!

    • jenny says:

Same here. I recall walking by the stores for years and figuring there wasn’t much for me. But now it’s definitely a source of inspiration and want! I was hoping the pricing range would be slightly less, like even Free People prices but it’s about $20 more on average than I was expecting.

I love love love Madewell! I was extremely upset when I found out they closed down the shop here in Vegas ;_; I mean that was the first place I wanted to shop at when I got my first paycheck! xD ahh~~~ Anyways, DO keep a look out for their sales! The clothing I always wanted usually would go on sale and were often dirt cheap :’)

    • jenny says:

Aw that sucks they closed! I appreciate the inside scoop on sales though! I’m gonna definitely see if I can get something at a good price :)

  4. Moni says:

Madewell has such nice clothing! But it’s WAY too expensive, considering it’s supposed to be the “more affordable” branch of J. Crew.

As for Alexa Chung… I can’t stand her after what she said about bloggers (basically said that fashion bloggers don’t put any work into what they do…)

    • jenny says:

Yeah I later found out that was supposed to be the sorta vision of the store but I really don’t see it either. It actually reminds me more of South Moon Under or maaaybe Free People especially price-wise but also having a lot of “imports.”

I figured (given my assumption of Alexa’s status in the style industry) that she would have conjured up some controversy by now. I really don’t follow her but I understand the sentiment of having strong dislike for certain public people :)

  5. felicia says:

Oh god, just… I can’t. I know I’ll spend all my money when I should be saving up for something that I’ll want later in the future. I just don’t know what that something is. I hate that feeling!
It’s all so cute! And I feel like you can never have too many basics since you can pile on more basic garments to make something interesting and funky (in a good way of course).

    • jenny says:

OMG THIS IS WHY I SAVE TOOOOOOOOOOOO

Because “what if”s!! What if I get sick? What if I lose my job? What if I wanna go on a big vacation? What if I find THE perfect dress? What if I need to retire I dunno *saves all the money*

  6. Jia Ni says:

Such a lovely collection!! :)) Love it when clothes seem so versatile and timeless like these~~
I’m trying to hold myself back on spending, too. SO hard, almost painful LOL~

    • jenny says:

It IS almost painful. I have the heavy guilt of my new camera purchase to keep me “in line” right now but I’m seriously in need of retail clothing therapy lately.

  7. This is SO your style, has your name written all over it! I also like these, too, and never heard of this brand but will be on the lookout for it! My sister loves Alexa Chung, and I do agree that she has a fab style sense :)

    • jenny says:

Yeah I know this is definitely my “king of shop” when I walk in and pick something up and Mike goes, “Don’t you already have that? And that too? …” But at least that keeps my wallet happy.

  8. Ingrid says:

Wow I’ve never heard of this brand before, thanks for sharing! (I live in Canada so we don’t have Madewell :( )

I love the Mulberry bag that Alexa Chung inspired~ :)

  9. Leslie says:

I really like Madewell! I used to go there a lot and really liked that they had a student discount (I can probably still get away with it lol) and their clothes are really a gorgeous mix of basics that can be worn in many different ways as well as fun prints in flattering cuts.

  10. the styles are so cool! totally my taste!! the dresses are really cute..

  11. M says:

yeah been trying to buy from them for ages
they dont have a store in canada at all

  12. Sewon says:

Ohh look at the adorable socks with the polka-dots! I love good quality comfy dresses that are actually well-constructed. I’ll have to visit their store in DC once I’m back home. :)

    • jenny says:

I didn’t realize your home is the DC area :) Yes well they opened a new store in Bethesda recently too and it’s quite nice. Though the DC one is much more arguably cool, haha!

  13. Jenn says:

Ahhh I love the stuff at Madewell, but it’s so pricey for clothes that look kind of basic… I’m sure it’s high quality and all, but even so, I’m never certain if it’s worth the cost… the sales though! I’m definitely keeping my eyes open for a good deal.

  14. mommo says:

Nice! I love socks and knit :) Will need to try harder on my diet LOL

    • jenny says:

Hahaha YOU CAN DO IT!! Just think about the amazing feeling when you wake up the next morning after “being good” the whole previous day ;)

  15. mMmMMMmm such pretty pieces. That red dress!

  16. Margaret says:

Yay! Madewell is my favorite store! Don’t they have such wonderful stuff? For better or worse, I think 50% of my closet is now Madewell items. LOL. You are so right, though–their items are so versatile and timeless! Even if I drop money on one of their higher-priced items I feel like I’m going to get a lot of use over it in the next few years. I check their site every day for sales. It’s the way to go. But definitely don’t hesitate if there’s a must-have item on sale; usually what I want is gone within a few minutes. It’s crazy! I latch on to whatever I want and don’t let go. haha!

    • jenny says:

I’m so jealous that you have so much Madewell in your closet! Wow wow wow! I want that goal hahah.

Thanks for the sale tips! Yeah I feel the same about good, basic, must haves. I don’t mind paying a little more. I started thinking this about a year ago and am slowly bringing in some good quality items with my fast fashion stuff from H&M, Target, etc.

      • Margaret says:

My husband was really crucial in helping me get over my spree-buying at cheaper retailers, specifically H&M, just because I COULD afford to buy so much. (He’s Japanese and kind of a brand whore, though, lol.) I was snatching up things that only kind-sorta fit my style simply because it was on sale or so cheap and I got to a point where I realized I didn’t love my wardrobe. He really encouraged me to get out of the habit and splurge on items that I really love. And around the same time I went into the Madewell store at Tyson’s and fell in love. Though my style is fairly eclectic, I’ve always been drawn to a bit of preppy and Madewell is classic and a bit preppy but also enough boho to balance it out. Love love love. :)

        • jenny says:

OMG this was soooooo me too! Especially sale-rack part! I mean I was always buying stuff that I’d go “yeah, I think I can make this work.” Finally I’m buying things that I don’t “HAVE TO MAKE WORK” because their better thought out purchases! HIGH FIVE!

  17. anastasia says:

    SO BEAUTIFUL. I’d never heard of Madewell before but I’m infected ;-;

  18. Tori says:

    J’ADORE ♥♥
I want that little clutch with the painted eyes she showed at the end of the video too, haha! So kitschy & cute~

  19. Chani says:

I didn’t knew that shop existed. I really love the dresses, they all look so nice!

  20. Bianca says:

IM STILL FKKIN BAFFLED WHY CHICAGO DOES NOT HAVE ONE…

i lvoe madewell, and i love that it supports my androgyny…;)

its like j.crew meets UO but not as preppy or “old money” like j.crew, and not as wannabe hipster as UO

    • jenny says:

That’s strange~ There’s like 6 within driving distance to me which kinda blew my mind. And 3 of them are at places I visit almost weekly. You have Topshop though ;__; haha

  21. ada says:

    Yeaaaah definitaly your style :D

  22. Miya says:

oh I am right there with you Jenny. And my boyfriend works for J.Crew so I am constantly pestering him to buy me things with his extremely generous discount. :)

  23. rene says:

That’s Liu Wen on the cover of the catalog! I really like her features! I like Alexa Chung too! I first googled her a few years back when I noticed her family name, Chung, which was a Chinese surname, and she don’t look a slight bit of chinese! Her style is very much like yours you know?

  24. bloomzy says:

They remind me of Topshop but with a more earthy feel, if that makes sense. I like it :D

I like Alexa Chung, but maybe a little bit of that is British patriotism haha

    • jenny says:

Oh yeah? I’ve only ever been to the Topshop in NYC (there are so few in the states) so I’m not too familiar with the brand outside of the occasional online shop browsing :)

  25. cin says:

I love the dress too!!! Window shopping on the site now~ :D They only ship to Japan though…

    • jenny says:

I had no idea they even shipped to Japan! Being a US only store that’s surprising since they seem to ONLY ship to US & Japan. Wow! They don’t even shop to Canada I heard.
