Donki’s Tokyo Cover Girl

Thursday January 28, 2010

I had heard Donki (ドン・キホーテ – Don Quijote) was putting out a line of extremely cheap clothing (fast fashion) but I didn’t realize they were selling full sets of outfits using a Tokyo Cover Girl theme! SO CUUUUTE! I love this idea!! Donki was one of the few places on my much too short trip last year that I visited multiple times. I think I visited 3 times?! The store basically has any sorta random ~ bizarre item you want. Kigurumi, hostess garb, circle lenses, fireworks, Japanese tees, sweat baths, cellulite rollers, so on & so on randomness.

OK, enough reminiscing and pining… the clothes!! :rose1:

Admittedly they’re quite basic, but for around $40 USD you can’t expect something extravagant for a 3-piece set! :cutesy: Most of the looks don’t really match my current tastes but the above three were my favorites! :kissyheart: I’d love a cheap set that includes the mock-shirt skirt!! I keep wanting to buy one but I’m still so paranoid about sizing and fit that I’ve held off. You can view them all here. :ladeeda: I also think I heard they were/have come out with a line of $7 jeans?! LOL! Fast-food-like fashion indeed :wakuwakuheart:

*added*
*Thought I’d add this little video of the SG models doing the cover shoots for the brand line :D
Thank god for teh youtube! haaaar!*

The boring stuff~ LOL :skull:

I didn’t think I’d get to blog today, though now it’s so late I don’t really have the time to post what I wanted to right now. Yesterday I wrote up this long private entry about how hard things have been for me this week. It was incredibly whiny and self-indulgent. Then last night something happened and I realized how selfish I have been. Selfish in that the only happiness that mattered was my own. So, I think I can make it to the weekend, and look on the brighter side of things and try to help others in their happiness first. :biglove:

Plus today my heater got fixed! yay~ no more loud noise! They still have to come back and replace the motor though. But it’ll keep the house heated until then so it’s OK.

Also, if you haven’t noticed, my New Year’s Resolution is going great! I haven’t bought any clothes and it’s been 4 weekends now! :excitedyo: The weekends are when we go to the stores, but I’ve only been window shopping! And even with my online purchases (overalls, contacts, the stuff I really want) I’m spending less than when I’d just buy some random thing that “reminded” me of some Japanese brand item! It’s true, and I have my higher-than-ever bank account to prove it! Ha! :twinklepink: Now I’m just holding off for spring items~ figure out what I want and then place an order~ Might be a while before I find my “must have” items :P

Speaking of sales I saw Zara was having one last weekend so I cruised in… ya know, just TO SEE! I hate their sales! :stressedmind: Seriously! Like 1/2 the merchandise on sale is damaged! WTF. :ng: Rips and stains and still $19!? no thanks Zara.

Oh yea, and I decided to slap my photo up in my sidebar! I used to have 1 there years ago, but then felt shame at showing how old I was! Hahahaha! :ng: Now there are soooo many bloggers in their 20’s, it’s no longer a shameful thing! Remember when we’d ask ourselves “What will I do when I turn 25?! I can’t continue to do such a childish thing like blog!” Plus ameblo & blogger all seem to have it, I feel I’m being all weird-secretive not having mine, I dunno~ Maybe I’ll take it down… errrrrrr. LOL Maybe this will better clear up any misunderstandings that I’m a Japanese person :facepalmcry: … Even though I have photos in my profile, I’ve still gotten random comments “Oh I thought you were Japanese.” gaaaaah  I never know how to respond to that b/c I don’t lead on that I would be~ :facepalmcry: :laughingheart: :laughingheart: :blushingcute:

OK, it’s late and I’m RAMBLING!

i give you kuddos! not shopping can be
difficult..those sales can be so tempting and evil.
    -_-

goodness, you don’t even look old at all :p
    & cute picture!

    • jenny says:

Given I’ll be 27 in 2 months I graciously accept your comment as the utmost compliment *bows*bows* WANNA LOOK YOUNG FOREVERRRR! Hahahaaa

I’ve had to rush myself quickly out of a store or 2 in order to avoid making a hasty purchase on a dramatically marked down item!! *must-stay-strong!*

  2. Zoraida says:

ZARA! I wish there was a Zara in WA but … whatever. Their sale section sounds like F21’s sale section -___- why must everything be damaged and cluttered!?!?!?

In all honesty, I think you look about 21 in that picture! Very, very cute! :3

  3. Jeaneth says:

I agree with Zoraida F21 has crummy sale sections..but their clothes are cheap anyway ^-^
    I am always shopping. I’m addicted :(
oh, and keep the pic! It’s really adorable!
you should blog about necessary spring items. Maybe it’ll stop me from going shopping-crazy
    xD

    • jenny says:

Haahaa, I’ll try! I haven’t seen too, too much come out yet that is shockingly new or desperately something I want. But it’s only January after all~ :P

  4. lyc says:

hugss ..whatever things had happened tho just let it b .. as long as u’ve realized which you think you should .. or shouldnt hav to ~ I know u can make it.. dun blame on urself =)

btw.. Im not appreciating those sales in Zara either .. perhaps just not d cup of mi tea .. hehe ..

  5. Nicole says:

Wow, you’ll be 27?! I don’t mean that as your old, I just realized that I’ve been reading your blog for so long now! :D
Anyway~ if I had to guess your age based on your photos, I’d say 23 at the most.

The new photo is totally cute! XD

I’m also doing rather well with not shopping. The only thing I’ve allowed myself is a pair of Circle Lenses, and I’m letting myself have WoW each month as well. But other than that, alllllll of my money is being saved for my trip to Japan this June! :D

    • Nicole says:

      you’re*
Apparently the grammar-nazi in me dies at this time of the night. :P

      • jenny says:

Haahaa I know right!? Bloggers I’ve been friends with have exited high school & are now in their final semesters of college D:!! Where does the time go!!??!! Seriously, I’ve been blogging since… 18!? 19!? I’m reaching nearly 10 years!! Wish I had ALLLLLLLL those archives & not just back to ‘04 :(

If that’s all you’ve boughten you’re doing amazing!!! Yea, circle lenses… let’s just write those off as, er, medical reasons? LOL and a monthly subscription is more like a necessary bill *harhar!

  6. Erin says:

We have a Donki in Hawaii, but it’s not nearly as cool as the ones in Japan D:

It’s funny that you mentioned Zara’s sale. I just bought some boots from Zara yesterday that were 40% off. I agree with you about a lot of the merchandise, though. Pieces made out of flimsy materials are especially prone to getting dingy, snagged, etc.

    • jenny says:

I’ve always wondered what the Hawaii Donki’s were like. Must say I was throughly jealous but now that you say it’s not so great I kinda feel let down. LOL, nothing imported is ever as good is it D:

      • Erin says:

Well, Donki took over the Daiei chain (also from Japan, but more of just a regular Asian supermarket) of stores in Hawaii, and didn’t do much different with it except add a bunch of penguin mascots around the isles, haha.

  7. Caitlin says:

I am glad that your resolution is going well. It is exciting that you are finally getting what you wanted instead of settling for copies of it.

  8. Kiyomi says:

Wow the Donkis in japan seems cool. I have to agree with Erin, the ones in hawaii are kind of boring. Just your same old asian supermarket. Haha but they do have some cute sanrio like stores inside. Dont worry about aging. You look super young. Really, i mean it! :)

Btw! Great job on your resolution~! Keep it up~ :3 i still haven’t started on mine. I call it lack of self motivation, with school and all i still can’t find it in me to start. haha. So lazy i am :D

  9. megan says:

Some of those look cute, though I’m not sure I would want to buy the clothes in a set. Cool that it’s so cheap though!

Hm, personally I think one should deal with their own happiness first. Unless helping other people be happy is what makes you feel happy. There’s a proverb or bible verse that I remember from when I used to go to church that said something like “Get the plank out of your own eye before you try to get the speck of dust out of your friend’s.” I think it is perfectly okay to put yourself first. :)

Good job on keeping your resolution! :D

    • jenny says:

I agree with you on this, to a certain point, except in the case of it being a spouse. I feel that when one is married you vow to make certain sacrifices. And reevaluating whose unhappiness is legitimate and whose is coming from a place of selfishness is only fair in a marriage. But as for any “friends” I’d never put their happiness before mine since friendship shouldn’t be about sacrificing.

  10. emma says:

yeh i like fast fashion too!
but ONE OR TWO really great pieces is important i think ^^
    congrats on your NYR!
    i didnt make any…

  11. Bibi says:

Their clothes remind me of the ones i’ve seen at ANAP but with a wider selection. Good job on the no shopping thing! I wish I had your strength. Also do you have any great tips on dieting? I want to lose 10lbs by may but so far i’m doing the opposite :-(

    • jenny says:

By May? That’s a good amount of time for 10!

Well, all I can do is share what I did but keep in mind everyone’s different.

Firstly, check any of my posts marked “diet” for a sort of tracking of what I did this summer.
      http://sushi-cat.net/index.php?tag=diet

What really, really sped up my process was creating a livestrong.com account (it’s free!) This way you can, not only track all your calories, but enter in your height, weight, and how many pounds you’d like to lose a week. I suggest no more than 2 lbs a week. It’ll give you your calorie-limit for each day. And as you track your weight it’ll recalculate your daily calorie limit :D

Start looking for low calorie foods you’d actually eat. Cabbage is a big one and one I chose to use in light soups or eat just boiled. I used it mostly as a snack though when I’d get hungry between big meals. Also, I stayed away from eating after 8:00pm. If I got super hungry but already ate dinner I’d choose to eat a sugar-free jello and drink lots of tea or water. It’s best to find a 0 calorie drink too. And 100-calorie packs are great for snack-portion control! They can be a bit pricey but lately I’ve been seeing them on great sales like 2.00$ a box!

Find an activity that’ll get you moving and that you at least sorta like doing. If you hate doing it you’re not gonna keep up with it. I dieted in summer so the best thing for me was going for a walk after dinner! Or even walk around stores. Both of which you can track with livestrong to see how many calories you burned each day. I’d do light calisthenics every other day too. Even simple things like side leg-lifts while you stand and brush your teeth is a good way to burn a few calories and tone your muscles a bit.

The final thing that I did and continue to do is take long hot and sweaty baths. Also leg massages to help with swelling. I’ll see about posting those soon. I scanned some in from a recent issue of SCawaii or Popteen (I forget.) :)

And lastly, remember it takes time. Real time! It took me little over 2 months to just lose 10 pounds. You’ll level off for a few days too, it doesn’t mean you need to quickly & drastically change your game plan. Just wait it out. There were weeks I thought I had reached a plateau but eventually the pounds came off!

      • Bibi says:

omg thank you so much! I’m going to try it out for sure and start going back to dance classes to work some of this holiday weight off. From 2008 to 2009 i slowly gained 10lbs but over christmas i grew sideways all over hehe thanks to my mom and her multiple cake cooking. And since i’ve been back I only lost 2lbs :-(
My sister eats the 100 calorie snacks all the time and i’ve tried them, they’re so good so i’m going to have to control myself because i could eat that whole box to myself haha
I’m going to join that site and really watch my calories now, I want my old body back!!! haha

      • Emily says:

Sorry to jump in but oh this is so useful! xD
I’m also trying to shed off some weight. Thanks for the tips Jenny! ♥

  12. Lissy says:

I want to go to Donki and The Daiso, NOW!

Sometimes when I save and not buy anything for a while I find it harder to get back into splurging for myself :D

Getting older doesn’t really bother me I kinda like it hehe ..

  13. Sumie says:

i like the tunic, but somehow japanese sizing is really weird an the clothing just hangs on me like a plastic bag.
some of the clothes i’ve already seen on gmarket in korea for 10bucks lol?

  14. Kim_Mari says:

    Ahh cute fast-fash indeed!!!!
As for having your photo up & worrying about age DONT MIND! I’m like 30 and worry about that aaaaallll the time but I still like to have fun and haven’t changed my P O V about life since I was 25 ~ HEEE I’m havin’ too much fun… :D
PS I just love your blog… and thanks for your bath salt reviews… I’m trying out some Bison sweat baths this coming month

    • jenny says:

Haahaa that’s for the comforting words!! It definitely IS more important to have fun and enjoy your life rather than worry about some number!! Though do you ever have those “friends” who are ready to be 45 despite being in their late 20’s!? That’s where a lot of my angst I think stems from. They’re all dinner parties & career path while I’m spending hours a day googling sweat bath products on random yaplogs, LOL!

      • Kim_Mari says:

Yep, I’ve got a few of those friends~ Most of them have been ‘grown up’ since they were 18! They skipped alot of the ~just fun~ part…. LOL I know what you mean by that causing some angst though. Every now and then one of them might eye my magazine pile, bathroom shelf, or jewellery box suspiciously and they’re probably thinking… WHAT IS SHE ON?! o___O

  15. An says:

    OMG
though they are rather basic, I am in love with that items (like I am with every cheap item xDDD)
Esp. the last outfit ya posted is 5/5 my style~

about ZARA sales, it seems like they have quite good stuff on sale here in Germany xDDD
But since the next store is 100km away I may not know about their conditions best ^^

  16. conny says:

i love the donki stores too!!!! they have so many diffrent things. i love it to buy socks and nail stuff there. last time i found a cool yakuza jacket for my little dog ^^

this year i plan to visit donki stores many many times. and the clothes look good :) i’m curious what kind of clohtes they will have this september :)

    • jenny says:

      For your doggy!? Cuuuute :DDD

Yea, yea! I think I’ll be back in Shinjuku this coming September so I hope they have maybe sweet items in their Tokyo Cover Girl line by then :D

  17. Ys says:

Well done on doing so well :) I seriously want to shop but am too low on funds cos of the new TV we had to buy :/

I used to have a pic in my sidebar but I took it down ages ago. Aww you shouldn’t feel old… mind you I’m starting to feel it now. 27 in April ah! Are we really too old to blog? Nah I don’t think so ;) There’s so many older people blogging now I think we’re still seen as silly kids not serious bloggers ;)

  18. Tori says:

Aweee, Jenny! *hug* That’s actually a great realisation to come to though… I think we all tend to get wrapped up in ourselves & lose sight of what’s really important in life. I don’t think you’re a selfish person at all though~ you always seem cheerful & sweet & your blog always brightens my day, so keep at it! ;)
LOVE LOVE the Donki fast fashion! The shirt-skirt is so Gilfy, haha! & I swear I’ve seen that last cover girl in JELLY’s street snaps~ do you know if she’s really a model or just like a staff-chan or something somewhere? She’s too cute, haha~
& congrats on keeping up with your resolution!! ♥ I thought I could do it too but I already broke down & bought some stuff at US shops *faillll*
Definitely keep your profile picture up though~ it’s adorable! & dude, I AM OLD TOO BUT WHO FUCKING CARES ♥ lol

    • jenny says:

Right, right! I was so focused on how things weren’t going so great for me that I didn’t even notice Mike was having a hard time too. He’s much more mellow than me, so for him to be unhappy is a bigger deal.

      She’s actually a small-time model :D! Mika Nakamura (仲村美香) :)
      She even has a blog~ http://ameblo.jp/mikapu1205/

She does snap sections in various mags (Ranzuki, Jelly, Nail Up), hair salons, catalogs, and other smaller stuff like that and is a regular model in the free paper “SG!” – http://sgweb.jp/

:DDv ねええええ! It’s cool you recognized her :D, She’s pretty and reminds me a bit of momoeri-chan~

  19. cin says:

uuu donki! i didn’t knwo about this! D: i went to donki once in shinjuku and that’s all cuz everyone else got scared off by the random seedy looking costumes and stuffiness but i braved it and went inside and found some nice stuff but too bad everyone else wanted to go and phil came to get me out D:

    • jenny says:

      Whut that sucks!!! Tell me you went to the basement!! That’s where all the sweat baths & canned cocktails are! HAHAHAAA And upstairs are the cheap accessories and such. ;_;

It is a bit seedy but what can you expect in the middle of kabukicho LOL~ surrounded by hostess life!

  20. Veronica says:

Haha wow – this place sounds awesome! Like you can just explore junk forever :D

Forever 21 kind of gives me a headache lately – but that’s good, because F21 is a no-sale resolution KILLER

I can relate about the indulgent thing – I was just whining to Andy about how I’m not getting the clients I want blah blah, but it’s just me afraid to call strangers on the phone. Sometimes I hear myself and i’m like “Oh geebus, that’s enough!” XD But maybe we need to complain to realize the other side? :)

    • jenny says:

That’s exactly how it is honestly! Well at least the Shinjuku one, but they’re all over. OMG YOU BETTER VISIT ONE!

  21. Sara Mari says:

I feel a bit suspicious of the quality of the Donki outfits naturally, but it would be interesting to buy one just to see what it’s like. I guess the “Check it Out” one is closest to my style.

I actually saw some of these in the Akihabara Donki, they were in the costume section so I just assumed they were some kind of cheap kinky cosplay. I have a picture of Vol. 27 and Vol. 23. 27 has a fedora, loose “face” shirt and black short shorts. 23 has a long white shirt, black long vest and black leggings. The prices were 1990Y

That’s great to hear your resolution is going well. I’m still trying to do better with mine. But I feel there is something special about this year, so I am looking forward to it. Maybe it’s just because it’s been ten years and I like even numbers haha!

I like your photo on the sidebar, you are soooo totally cute! You don’t look 25 at all and could totally lie about that if you want to haha I personally enjoy the blogs of 20 somethings because their writing tends to be more coherent.

    • jenny says:

I share the same suspicions. I really wouldn’t expect high quality. Honestly if it’s even on par with Forever 21 quality I’d be surprised! But they were on sale for 19 huh!? Probably New Year’s discount you think? How do they package the hat btw. Is it flattened? LOL! I really imagine these being wrapped like halloween costumes in flimsy plastic bags, hahahaaa!

Awe thanks! I’m about to be 27 soon *cringes.* I used to hate looking young but now I don’t care so much. Though getting carded is like a double-edged sword. Yay I look young but boo b/c I’m not, hahahahaaa!

But I’m happy to be older, I’m definitely wiser than when at 20!

  22. Nana says:

Aahhh!! I completely *LOVE* the idea of how the outfits are set up~~
it’s kind of like you were looking through a magazine, liked an outfit, and HAD to have everything in it!
i have actually been wanting to set up my outfits like that~!
like how you did that “look book” before!
i feel like it helps not buying excessive clothing as well ~~
i have SOOO many clothes that I don’t have anything to do with!!
i think it’s better to buy the few select things you know you will ♥ =)

  23. Honeydew says:

That’s a really cool idea! A lot of the stuff you posted from the tokyo cover girl seem like they could be found in Forever 21, especially that last photo (19) of the black swiss jacket. That is such a Forever 21 item!

I never thought you looked Japanese when I first started following your blog. But I guess I can understand why people mistaken you as one, because you dress and style your hair like one. :) And especially now that you’ve purchased those circel lenses, I think they make you look more Asian? lol.

    • jenny says:

Actually I think it was more people never saw when I posted photos of myself so that’s why they’d think that! B/c the comments would only come on random entries where I’d post a photo of myself. Now I’m a million times more vain and tend to post waaay too many photos of myself in nearly every entry that I don’t think there’s been any mistaken identity lately, LOOOOOOOOL!

  24. Fai says:

I love how you put your profile pic on the side bar. I’ve been wanting to put my pic too, but I guess I’m not ready to show my face hahaha.

Wow.. that clothing line is extremely cheap. I will definitely check them out on my next trip to Japan!!

  25. f says:

Hooray for not spending a lot of money! Unfortunately, I’ve been spending way too much since the New Year … :(

  26. rene says:

It’s only normal. Humans are selfish beings. So *pat back* it’s ok!
Speaking of which, Jen, do you know how to make a private blog entry on blogspot? I feel kinda ‘expose’ lately with my entries. HAHA!! if you know what I mean….

    • jenny says:

Unfortunately I don’t. i know you can make your entire blog private but not sure about entries. Never seen a private entry on a blogspot.

  27. Cecilia says:

OH wow! The covers! I’m really feelin those clothes :) Good luck with your New Years resolution!

  28. Jing says:

That’s so interesting! I have never heard of “fast fashion”. Wish we had them here :) Since those clothes are cheap, does that mean they are of low quality? Sort of like costumes? Just curious ^^ Anyway, I’m happy to hear that you are keeping with your NY’s Resolution. It’s really admirable :)

    • jenny says:

Yea, they’re lower quality than real branded fashion. Like Forever 21 and H&M are fast fashion. Mass produced, cheaper, and quality can sometimes not be so good.

  29. Arina says:

    waa~ i love #31: “Bohemian”
and i agree on ZARA >.

  30. Thao says:

Haha, fast food fashion! I had imagined a drive through line, ordering new pairs of jeans. Good job on your resolution. I think my online spending has increased dramatically, as well as my food spending.

  31. Bianca says:

Ah-hahaha, Oh Jenny, this made me lol
“Maybe this will better clear up any misunderstandings that I’m a Japanese person …” lol! I think that profile picture is really cute, and youve given my the confidence to blog being 22 and feeling like (…..everyone online is 13…)

And I also want to say that I feel a little weary too about those clothes, you think they’d stand a washing?

  32. chaigyaru says:

omgosh. the models look soooo tired by the end of the photoshoot. i feel so sorry for them!!!
but they all look so pretty when modelling! :)

  33. reanne says:

OMG, i love those outfits. i love japanese, korean, and chinese outfits. they’re pretty and they cath my eyeballs. haha,

  34. Lexxii says:

Oh that idea is soo cool for the cover models. There are a bunch that are nice and its $40 for all the pieces together? That’s pretty good. :biglove:

  35. Reiko says:

You can continue to do ‘childish things’ if you want to, you look totally cute with whatever you do! You don’t look like your age! XD How I wish I am looking younger than actual age like you!

  36. Linda says:

yayy for your higher than ever bank account!
i hope you splurge for spring clothing! :D
