Resolutions & Their Pesky Progress

Wednesday March 02, 2011

I was talking with a friend today about how our New Year’s resolutions were going and it got me thinking about the reality of the past 2 months.

Confession. I haven’t been pure in my resolution!

I had a few moments of weakness and I admit to buying 3 items since January 1st! :drops::x The positive spin on this though is that it was only the past 2 weekends that it happened. :deco13: Just so much crazy work stress. And shopping had really become my cure all last year. :ng: But I don’t feel so compulsive with shopping like before. Or really, impulsive I should say! :P So really I made it 2 months in my resolution, yay. :)

LOOOOL!
A VAST IMPROVEMENT I THINK!

Yea, I went through my blog and these were the things I bought during November and December. :;_;: Compared to January and February I don’t feel so fail at my resolution now. :?: I actually felt embarrassed when I compiled the list. :drops:

Since then not only have I broke the need to buy anything and everything I see, I purged my closet and etc. as a sorta symbolic “new start” action. :ok:

So at first my spending freeze was gonna be 2 months but then I thought it should be 3. Mike thought it was still 2. He suggested we each spend a small fraction of our tax return on ourselves since we don’t have any huge travel plans this summer. :deco11: I was going to quit my freeze at the start of March then. :ok: But then the government shutdown news came and I was scared I’d be forced into leave without pay until everything re-opened. :ng: But today they agreed on a bill to keep everything open for another 2 weeks at least while they agree on a full year budget. Tltr I know, so google it lol. Ah so now “what should I do,” I think. hmmmmm ::9:

I feel I don’t “need” the freeze any more. Even if I said “I’m done” I don’t plan to run out and buy the 500$ See by Chloe bag, ya know?! Haahaaa! :deco8:

Anyone else still keeping tabs on their 2011 Resolutions (if you made any of course, lol.) :deco12:

I miss your posts about things you buy!! do it for your fans!LOL

I have actually been keeping up with my resolutions!! And I have also started some new ones too :3 Although my resolution about blogging has completely gone down the drain =_=

  2. chiihimeq says:

HAHAH im happy you could start reaching your 2011 resolutions but buying fashion stuff is so happy thing why to stop it XD

  3. Michelle says:

Wow that’s a big improvement, congrats ^.^! So far I’ve been following my resolutions slowly but surely, lol. Also that top is so cute! I love the colors :-) And I have that same iPhone cover but I wit the Korilakkuma design instead, hehe. I hope your weekend is going great so far!

  4. chocoNIKKI says:

Wow! I think the amount you spent from Nov-Dec 2010, is about the amount I spend in half a year..! Such is the power of a having a job..!~ =D hehe~ It’s hard not to shop when all the spring season clothes and goods are out! Everyone wants a change from the drab gray winter (if they have a winter season where they live that is… -o-;;;) right..? lol

And my new years resolution was to study hard, especially my language courses, and work ahead of time instead of procrastinating on essays… So far I got about 2 weeks into it, then got lazy.. But I started being more diligently since a week ago!!! T^T;;;; …New Years resolutions… So hard to keep…

  5. Janet says:

I made several resolutions this year (yes also splurging less if any) and I’ve managed to keep nearly half of them thus far :) LOL @ Rubi

  6. M says:

the chloe bag is SO nice
but i cant splurge even though i think about it all the time lol

  7. Veronica says:

I really love that coordinate with the floppy hat!

At least you didn’t splurge on 4 things! ;)

    • jenny says:

LOL ty ty Veronica t_______t;; Silver lining right!? I’m feeling better with it now you know? Remember all that talk about how I felt I lost some sense of “center” and I feel really materialistic, this has definitely helped change that!

  8. Cindii says:

That is an improvement at least!! Love that pink top and the hat. Hehe~

  9. Yuri says:

    My resolution was to eat better…I broke that the week of 2011 T___T;;

  10. Thao says:

My progress isn’t so great. However, I have until the end of the year to accomplish it. And I keep retrying each month if I break my resolution.

I think November and Decembers are like the outlier months because that’s when you have Black Friday and After Christmas sales. I feel like those months will even out if I don’t spend like crazy for the other 10 months.

  11. Sidney says:

i didn’t make resolutions (at least i didn’t write them down) because i know i’m so bad at keeping them and the feeling of “letting myself down” is SO CRAPPY. i’m just trying to improve things i was unhappy with i guess…so lame sounding lol~

hey just 3 things? that’s SO GOOD!! for me, i’m not super impulsive when it comes to shopping, and i am usually the one who tells my friends “don’t buy that, you don’t need it/it looks cheap/it is not flattering :|” all serious-like LOOOOL
BUT i will have moments where i know i haven’t gone shopping/spent money for a while so i kind of go crazy. erk. i’m waiting until it’s def. turning into spring and lots of spring items are out everywhere to “redo” my closet!!

    • jenny says:

I NEED YOU TO GO SHOPPING WITH MEEEEEEE! I have Mike. Mike goes “Oh it’s cheap, just get it!” And I would have to say YOU’RE NOT HELPING!!! I asked why he’s so bad at not helping and he goes, “But buying stuff makes you happy, I like seeing you happy!” LOL *facepalm*

  12. Tori says:

Congratulations, Jenny~! 2 months is an awesome accomplishment, especially since no shopping is a hard thing to do in our consumer culture *fail* I’m so happy your job is safe (at least for now, but hopefully for sure soon!) I know you must feel so relieved!
Still, I agree with Mike that you should treat yourself~ you deserve it even if you feel like you ‘cheated’ in January, haha XD
J’adore your floppy hat from UO too~~

  13. Samantha says:

When did you get the new wig? D:

  14. Charlene says:

GOD GIRL! That second list is craaaaazy! I think a lot of girls don’t realize how much we get sometimes. I feel like I need at least one teeny weeny thing a day. But I’m trying. My goal is to have at least 3K saved up by October for the start of school. It seems to be going purdy good. Especially since I got my tax returns, lol. So far there’s… 700 somethin in the safe haha.

    • jenny says:

      This. this. this. this.

All the things I bought mostly were not very expensive, but add them up and it’s like DAMN do I really need so many little things!? If I hadn’t bought them maybe I’d be ok buying 1 big nice thing sometimes!?

Good luck with your saving, Oct is a ways away I think you’ll make it!!

  15. Omi says:

omg that hat is soooo cute!
Where did you get it? UO? urbanoutfitters?

  16. sukipooki says:

Wow what a cut down! lol I wish I had that much money to buy that much stuff! I haven’t made any major resolutions ( ehehehehe) so nothing to keep track of =P

  17. Woah, that’s a really big improvement! You’ve been doing a really good job so far. ^_^ And btw, the few things you bought between January and February are super nice!! And your outfit looks so cute in that last photo. ♥

    • jenny says:

Awe thank you so much!! Yea I think I made “smarter choices” with these more recent purchases rather than random impulse choices like before :D

  18. Shirley says:

I’m actually going on a spending freeze for the month of March! Do you have any tips for me? Haha~

Oh and I have that Rilakkuma iPhone case too! But I’m using a polka dot one by Kate Spade right now ( ´ ▽ ` )

    • jenny says:

Hmmm tips, um, avoid stores you usually spend money in! If I had avoided Urban Outfitters and H&M (which I did for nearly 2 months) I probably would have been 100% better, haahaa. Check your bank account daily. It’s nice to not see money flying away nonstop LOL

  19. zoraida says:

haha i think my biggest resolution was save money but uh hhahahaha being social kinda turns you broke. hmph. well i haven’t really been buying anything too superficial for myself but only because i’m justifying some purchases lol D: wahhhhh

another one is growing out my hair which i’ve been good on so yay :D

the top you bought is super cute!

    • jenny says:

Yeah new love is pricey but it’s fine! I bought things for other ppl and food and whatnot too, this was mostly stop spending on me, me, me and I think you’ve been good at that too it seems!!

  20. rene says:

Yikes. that is a lot of VS purchases!

I was wondering don’t you buy any insurance savings plan? or investments plan? If you have one, then every month they would just deduct from your bank and you can save easily every month!

  21. Melissy ♥ says:

    HUGE IMPROVEMENT~ ^__^
You ought to be super proud! :)
You’re so good in keeping to resolutions!! I ought to work on that too. In a moment of weakness I forget all about them.. :

  22. Stacey says:

Woaw. Definitely a BIG difference! Grats on the improvement n_____n !!

I was impulsive yesterday and bought a whole new set/kit of make-up ._______.”’ I was going there just for eye shadows and spent over 200$… LOL I really hope I’m not going to regret this. I wasn’t this impulsive in the past, I’m not sure what’s gotten into me the past few months. I need to be more careful u___u

I didn’t make any resolutions for New Years, more like small goals I wish to accomplish, but I didn’t want to put any pressure on myself. I’ve been keeping with with some of them, but others I think won’t happen until later this year…

    • jenny says:

Ah, what you described with the makeup was sorta how I had become. It’s not necessary a bad thing though! If you don’t mind it, then it’s all good!! But I started feeling really materialistic and frivolous with it and it made me feel like… not myself anymore. So I wanted to stop :)

  23. Jane says:

Yep, looking at the lists you can really see that you have improved! Good job :)
I didn’t really make any resolutions this year >.> I’m too lazy like that. Maybe next year I will have something I feel I need to achieve or improve on hehe.
PS: The hat looks extremely cute on you! :P

  24. Pam says:

That hat looks adorable on you! The perfect hat for every season! ^_^

  25. mika says:

    Good for you! ^_^

I made the resolution to be healthier and so far so good, but I also made the resolution to not smoke when I drink, but sadly I’ve been smoking both times I’ve been out drinking this year :( But I’m happy that I’ve only been out two times :)

  26. Bianca says:

i bought a few things, but nothing major (like new earmuffs : need: and lipsticks :buy one get one:)

but no ive been better the only one i have been slacking is making my own lunch. Sometimes life just gets too busy for me to cook for myself 14 times a week @_@ but i have been better about NOT going out to get 14 times a week! lol and my savings have not been touch unless it was needed like a new harddrive or a research book for motion graphics.

i did feel guilty but its good to hear that youve slipped “a little” as well. glad I had those gift cards! Oh I also bought some magazines at borders but it was like 4 foreign mags for 10 bucks..U CANT BEAT THAT!

ps…ironic that your hat & my earmuffs came from UO, i think NOT

plus i didnt freeze for gifts and i bought plenty of those ((valentines, post cards, etc))

my major one was to stay focused art wise and I think i have i mean eleanor is looking way classy ive applied to a shitload of new jobs so all is good…

blogging more…//fail////// -_- my life is BORING

as long as this comment was it couldve been a blog post :/

    • jenny says:

LOOOOOOOOOOL you should just copy & paste it on your blog, it’s a good update on how things have been really I think!! ;D

UO is currently in a “low price” cycle LOL it’s so hilarious to see them go up & down. One season shits $ as balls 100+ then the next it’s all like 30$ hahahaa ftw~~

  27. pam says:

I forgot to ask you earlier…where’s your sweater from? I need one! :)

  28. Amelia says:

I use a cycle pattern in my wardrobe, basically what i guve to charity is what I replace when I shop. Except shoes, I destroy shoes and I always need to buy new ones.

You definitely seem more centered and more focused when it comes to clothes now. Spending freezes are quite effective. I’m so glad the government shutdown didn’t happen (I wanted to say something on twitter, but I felt creepy).

  29. Aoko says:

Look on the bright side, even If you have decided to go on a spending freeze, 3 items aren’t as much as you used to buy before n_~! It’s a really big improvement =D! What is more, It’s not that bad to buy something for yourself from time to time =D!
BTW, cute purchases ♥! Love the black felt hat =3!

I have been keeping up with my resolutions! It’s actually the first time I have written them down in order to try to achieve them all =3!

    xoxo

  30. Aimee says:

Hmm, my resolution was to lose about ten pounds before I went to Tokyo in April. So far I have only lost three. Ha! I blame that to my other failed resolution to eat less candy.

  31. Purin says:

Usually during November and December, people in general tend to spend more for various reasons but the main one is Christmas so you shouldn’t feel so guilty ^^u
However I’m glad you are worried about saving money, keep on like that :D if you feel you want to buy something really bad think if it will be useful for you or if it’s something that will be stored in your closet forever, after that, the decision will be easier :)

  32. Courtney says:

You really did change your habits. That’s impressive! Good for you ^^ Haha my resolution was mostly to loose weight. So far I’ve done well, but same as you, recently I’ve been under stress and haven’t been sticking to it as well. But I know that I will accomplish it this year! :)
Also glad to hear that things seem better with your job! That must have been a huge load off. :)

  33. Ys says:

Wow that top is pretty :) I think you’ve done amazingly well considering your Nov-Dec list compared to your Jan-Feb. Be proud, girlie :)
