Scenic Train Excursion

Monday, May 23rd, 2011 | 60 Comments

I haven’t had two days of NOT blogging in a row since March! But I was exhausted yesterday.

Saturday Mike and I went on a scenic train excursion! Yeah it’s a sorta random thing to do but we saw on PBS there was one a short few hours away and thought HEY, WHY NOT! I love trains anyway!

Basically we were seated in a restored dining train car being pulled through lush green mountainside by a historic steam locomotive!

This one is in Western Maryland. It takes you on a round-trip from Cumberland to a charming town called Frostburg. We bought First Class tickets which gets you seated in the dining car with food and beverage! COMPLETELY WORTH IT. It’s not much extra and the coach seats were a bit grimy from what I could tell.

On the trip out you get served lunch. I chose the Southwest Steak with grilled peppers & onions. It was pretty tasty!! I enjoyed it

Then you get to Frostburg. You can see them turn the huge locomotive around and also explore the little town. There were ice cream cafes and coffee shops. Plus a kitty that worked at a deli and let me pet it lol!

After I few hours we got back on where dessert & coffee were waiting! DELICIOUS. Cheesecake and strawberry pie. Coffee wasn’t bad either. I had nearly 3 cups because I was exhausted by then.

On the way back home from the station we stopped off and got a pizza. Later I would realize that was a mistake, LOL (so stuffed.) I got ready for bed at about 5pm haha and mostly slept on and off until this morning.

I was surprised that there was a pretty good mix of people. I thought it would just be us and old people lol. But nope. There were other young couples, families, older couples, and the super train enthusiasts lol.

A GOOD DAY

I don’t know if it’s obvious but the train was moving too! xDD They actually have a ton of open windows like this for you to basically risk your life xD.

Ah yeah the bag expanded beautifully since at one point both of us needed to store our outerwear into it!

Awesome~ That sounds like a lot of fun and a cool thing to do near home… I’ve never been on a real (steam) train and I definitely want to someday. My city is a train city…I wonder if we have something like that? ^^
Also, cute coord as usual

I absolutely love your outfit and I’ve always wanted to take an actual train ride! The closest to a train ride I’ve ever taken was the bullet train in Japan and that….doesn’t count hahahaha.

jenny said
May 24, 2011 @ 9:20 am

Yea, I take a “real train” to work every day but it doesn’t count either. This historic & restored train felt like THE REAL DEAL. A real slice of Americana!

The window one was a bit scary because it was moving. I JUST knew my head would get chopped off by a big tree limb or something but… spared! They had a bunch of these open areas for you to take photos through etc. Definitely worth the 2hr drive there :p

There’s like a BUNCH of similar historic scenic train routes throughout the country! There might be one near you because the special on PBS showed nearly 1 in every state! It wasn’t too expensive. For first class I think the tickets were $40 each. You get a bunch of food and it takes up a good day!
