Golden Half Photos

Wednesday July 27, 2011

I had a roll of Golden Half photos developed this weekend. It takes a while to finish out a roll of 36 since there are two photos to every 1 frame. So some of these “adventures” might look familiar from the past few months :deco8:

My Golden Half is my favorite toy camera. I am still using my Holga135 when I remember to and my Fisheye2 I haven’t used since April unfortunately. :;_;:

I was thinking about getting one for my trip to Japan next June. I’m guessing its worth it?

  3. L says:

I’ve been thinking about getting a golden half for ages. But I don’t think I’ll ever have the time to use it though…

Your photos are pretty. They look really dreamy. :)

  4. Michelle says:

Ah! That photo of you sticking your head out of the train is super adorable! :)

    • jenny says:

psssssssssshaw I can’t even compare to even just what you post on your blog!!! Your entries are total eyecandy for me haha :D

  6. Honeydew says:

Aw, lovely photos! I always find that you always look taller in your photos, despite you saying you’re short. I’m actually taller than you (5′3.5″) but somehow you always seem to give me the impression that you’re almost just the same height as me in your photos. It must be the angles you take your pictures at, lol.

  7. Sami says:

    Beautiful pictures
If theres one thing I hate about technology is that its taken away owning photographs! :(

    I absolutely LOVE your style!
Not just your fashion style (which I do love of course xD) but also your photography style and all the things you post pictures of~ You have a very distinct character and very stylized posts. I think it’s absolutely wonderful. :)

And P.S., I can’t get over how cute those pictures of you on the train are! XD

    • jenny says:

Hana… that is one of the nicest things anyone as ever said to me… I don’t know how to emote this properly… (人´゚Д゚`)
      *lol thank you :)

  12. lissy says:

  13. Thuy An says:

I love your golden half photos! You look so cute peeking out the train haha :)

and this makes me want to buy more film for my fisheye and start shooting with it again. I haven’t touched it for about two years :’(

    • jenny says:

This is the same reason I got back into my film cameras too. Only I had a lot of film left over so I felt guilty for not using it. So I started using them again & am really enjoying them again :)

  17. Cindii says:

    Nice photos!!

  18. miney says:

hey, I’m pretty interested in buying holga camera. What film do you use ? Normal one or holga film?

    • jenny says:

Depends on the Holga you want. The original is Holga 120 and that uses special 120mm film and requires special development as well. I have a Holga 135. It uses 35mm film which is easily available and the standard for photo development so having the film processed should be pretty easy.

If you go with the Holga120 it would be good to locate a place willing to develop your film first. I know a few friends who have to ship off their 120 film for development and wait days or longer for photos while 35mm film can still be often processed within 1-hour. For these photos I dropped them off at Target and picked them up an hour later when I was done shopping :)

Hi Jenny, lovely pictures! I also just wanted to let you know that I love your blog! It’s been a daily routine for me to check Jenny’s Blog~

  20. I know nothing about cameras but I do know that those pics are cool! ;) Love the one of you hanging out.

  21. Joey says:

The photos turned out great! I did contemplate getting a Golden Half, but went for a Diana Mini in the end. I know what you mean about finishing a roll of film, though. I have a Holga, too, and I always take more than a week to finish one roll of film

  22. Huynh says:

Great photos. The photo with you hanging out of the train window is cute :]

  23. Bianca says:

love these, i really want a chelsea maika cmera

  24. Linda says:

your pictures are always so cute!!! i love how the golden half has that natural retro effect :)

  25. HelloEnaam says:

Beautiful photos! They have a such a dreamy nostalgic feel to them! lovelovelove~

So, can you just use regular film from like Target in this camera? And then drop it off at the drugstore or something to process the photos? Or do you need to buy special film?

    • HelloEnaam says:

Also, did you use a special film to get that dreamy quality that your photos have? I really love how the lighting is really warm and the photos have a kind of aged look to them.

      (thanks for the info!)

      • jenny says:

Nope it’s all the camera!!! The cameras are designed like the old 60’s~70’s cameras. So they let in light, aren’t crisp and clear, capture the light in pastel colors ect. It’s mostly all the camera but film choice has a slight effect too. For these I was using Agfa brand 200 speed. It gives more a vintage feel than let’s say a Fujifilm 400 speed. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/happiijenny/tags/fujifilm400/)

If you’re interested my Flickr has more of my film photos. I used to note within the tags which film was used & camera. Unfortunately many of the photos are hidden because I’m no longer pro, but 200 are still there :)

    • jenny says:

“can you just use regular film from like Target in this camera? ”

YUP!! I recommend using a 400 speed until you get a handle on the camera’s lighting/a sense for how film reacts to these toy cameras. If you buy 100 speed and then take all dark photos with no flash you will be VERY unhappy with the results. My favorite has always been Fujifilm Superia X-TRA 400 :)

“And then drop it off at the drugstore or something to process the photos? ”

YUP! Just note that it’s a “toy camera.” For my golden half I let them know they’ll see 2 photos per 1 frame and to just print them as is.

“Or do you need to buy special film? ”

NOPE, not usually! Unless you’re using a camera that requires something else besides 35mm film. I only bought cameras that use 35mm film because it’s easy to find & easy to have developed. For example the Holga uses 120mm film which costs more to buy & develop. MOST toy cameras use 35mm though.

Once you become familiar with different film & film speeds you can branch out and BUY special film. Forever I have a ton of Lomography brand 100 speed film. You’ll notice the color differences and quality between brands and speeds. Lomography brand also puts out a redscale ready film and other color special 35mm films now but I haven’t tried it. Urban Outfitters used to sell that stuff like crazy so they still might :)

  26. Papier says:

Jenny, your train photo is so adorable as are the rest of the photos. You make me want to pick up my own Golden Half and actually give it a spin instead of keeping it as more of a collector’s item.

Where do you get your film processed? And is there anything I need to tell the photo technician to get both shots on the same frame? I’ve heard stories of half frame shots being seperated into two photos so I just want to be sure.

Thanks for taking the time to browse this
    I read your blog everyday!

    • jenny says:

Where do you get your film processed?
      Target :P
I used to go to Ritz Camera but they’re all slowly closing down. I used to just get the negatives developed then scan them in with my photo scanner. But now I just dump it off at Target, get prints, scan the prints. $7 :)

And is there anything I need to tell the photo technician to get both shots on the same frame?

      YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Yes, yes, yes.

In the “notes” portion just say that it is a “toy camera” that puts two snapshots on one frame and that they can just print the frames “as is” with two photos on 1 print.

So far it hasn’t been a problem :) But the first time I left it at Target and didn’t leave a note they didn’t process it because it was confusing. I note it’s a toy camera on my other two camera’s film too now.

sorry i thought my comments appeared but at the end it was down. Stormy here, bad internet again.. :(

  28. Miamy says:

I guess there is something about film that makes us appreciate each and every shot that we take with the camera!

  29. maikue says:

i love the photos! especially the train one.

  30. cin says:

I miss your film photos! These are especially lovely~~ hehe We’re planning to go to Kyoto now instead of Okinawa so I’m gonna use my Golden Half over there :D

  31. Chani says:

I really love your pictures, they are so pretty. After I saw your Golden Half I decided to buy one. It seems to be small so it’ll be more easier to carry than my other 35mm camera. I just hope I’ll be able to take nice photos as yours :)

    Have a nice day!

  32. Ria says:

I want a toy camera! These pictures look really cool and I love the train shots.
