Closet Staples

Sunday November 06, 2011

I wrote this up a few weeks ago when Michelle suggested it as a blog topic. I took so long to just re-size & post the photos, ugh. :deco13: :deco13: I should have used my iPhone because then they would have been up faster. But… it’s still all pretty relevant so it’s all good :) These are items I’ve had in my closet for a pretty long time and use quite often. They’re not my “favorites” or “most fun” necessarily… They’re items I need mostly. :) They’re key and can easily be paired with so many other items. Definitely must haves. I wear them all the time.

I think the theme for many of these would be the idea of simplicity with an edge. :P Most of these are standard staples but each has a tiny bit something extra that attracted me to them and added a bit of “me” into it. Many I wear for both work and play :)

S-Leg Black Tights
These are my most worn tights. I probably wear them at least twice a week. They’re opaque black and very durable and quite washable. Because of this I often wear them to both work and out. And best feature? One leg has a bright red ribbon print at the ankle! :deco15: So they’re a little quirky and not 100% boring. And yes, people notice the ribbon all the time! :) They’re from Shimamura, Tsubasa’s S-Leg line.

Black Studded Heels
Without a doubt the best go-to heels I own. Classic black, fit great, and comfortable thanks to some padded inserts. Like the tights, these have a little twist. They have gold studs in the back at the heel. :deco9: A little more fun than just the standard black heel. I wear these to work and out too. I like items with dual purpose. Boring enough for office attire but an added element to keep me interested. They’re from H&M.

Ribbon Tie Shorts
This pair of tan shorts became almost daily non-work wear for me this past spring and summer. I’m still wearing them at least once a week and plan to carry them into winter with tights! These are from H&M.

Knit Cardigan
This is a must since I get cold easily. I even wore it throughout summer. I would bring it in my bag for shopping indoors or eating at restaurants. It’s a beige knit. It has an oversized shape plus these “cut-outs” along the edge that I really really love. :deco2: It matches with nearly everything I have. I’ve even worn it to the office on my casual days too.

UNIQLO Blazer
I bought this my last day in Tokyo last year. On a whim. I already had a thick black blazer at home but this was cotton and I thought maybe I’d use it at the office. SO GLAD. I wear this multiple times a week! It’s extremely comfortable, easily washable, and keeps its shape! I ended up often wearing it outside the office too. I love this blazer like a child!

White Blouse
Another often talked about “must have” in anyone’s closet. This is my version. :deco2: I got this blouse last winter and have worn it into the ground especially to work. Looks great with the black blazer and black heels. Since it’s now cold out again I’ll be wearing it even more so. Photo didn’t come out so good, white shirt on a white door in a dim closet, haha~

Maxi Dress
Oh this dress I’ve worn so much since last spring!! At one point this past summer I wore it almost daily. It’s really comfortable and extremely easy to just “throw on.” I’m 5′1″ so finding a maxi dress that didn’t drag on the ground was a god send. I’ve worn it in this cold weather already with some thick tights and a duffel down coat and moccasins.

Satchel
I blogged about this bag back in May. It’s my most used bag now. I’m hardly ever without it especially for all day outings. The ability to transform it into a backpack is invaluable plus it goes with nearly everything. :deco5:

Camisoles and Slips
The be all and end all of key items. :) I own countless shapes, styles and colors of these items. I wear some version of camisole or slip daily. :) The photo is of my long slips for dresses, but I have tanks and camis in a drawer separated by color. Black is my most used though and I own multiple of them.

I just fell in love with the white blouse, it’s really really pretty

This post is awesome!! :D I definitely have a few staple items, too! And I find that these items are usually more classic, simple items that fit into any style, haha~ Love this post so much!! ^_^

Ah exactly exactly! Simple items that can work into almost any style. Those lists of “must haves” to get you through any occasion! I’m actually glad I managed to pick up a few along the way.

Camis are really important for me. I can never wear an outfit without having a cami underneath all the layers. My immune system is pretty bad so I can get sick easily. :C Tights too! Like you, I’m 158cm and i feel like pants just makes me look shorter. I only wear them when I HAVE to.

    Really great post Jeennnyy.

    • jenny says:

I’m happy you enjoyed it. I’m the same. I always wear cami’s under items even if it’s in no way see-through! For me it’s about feeling covered, but the warmth factor is so true too!

Yes on the pants! And I hate getting stuff hemmed so blegh. Skirts please! Or else they get rolled and cuffed!

  5. Sewon says:

Camis are soo crucial! I own the same ribbon tie shorts in black, and they were such a staple in Korea this summer. Hmm, I’m in love with your convertible bag/backpack!

  6. Your style is really adult in some way XD As for me, i wear jeans, tshirts and really normal stuff >: I wish i could have a better closet XD But as college student, i get the feeling that have nice clothes really costs a lot >: Another thing, having fat arms, i have problem finding nice camisoles and stuff like that.

    • jenny says:

Awe yea well it’s both because I work in a fairly conservative office plus I am pushing late 20’s in age lol. It’s sorta bittersweet shifting from fun fashion to more adult choices at first but it just sorta happens and you don’t even really realize you’re doing it xD. But I’m so happy with my wardrobe these days. I don’t know if it necessarily has to cost a lot though, many of these are from H&M. I DO remember dressing up a bit for my job during college and sometimes I’d have to go to class right after. Some classmates thought it was weird and said they’d NEVER dress up nice for any job. Lol. I dunno… I think it’s nice to look decent for work but to each his own xDv. So I guess what I’m saying is, don’t sweat looking too grownup during college ;). Just have fun and relax!

      That went long :P

I love this kind of post. Makes me think about my own wardrobe and whether I’m happy with it.
One thing I hate about my shopping habit is buying items that were cute but difficult to combine with anything else I have.

    • jenny says:

Mhmm, Mhmm I have to really watch myself not to do that! I was really bad about that 2 years ago ;___; I’ve gotten better about it but I had to work on it.

  8. Courtney says:

    fun post :)

I would think everyone’s staples would be about the same, but in reality yours are much different than mine so it’s fun to see. :)

Many of these I am envious of especially the satchel! :D

    • jenny says:

Yeah it definitely depends on your lifestyle! I’m sure a photograper or someone in a more relaxed office environment would have different key items than my typical “career type” ones :)

  9. Ingrid says:

I had no idea H&M made durable, comfortable shoes! I do that too though– putting insoles in shoes to make them easier to walk in :)

    • jenny says:

I didn’t either. I got these 2 years and can’t believe they’re still going strong! I wear them constantly too!

Same here. I love them all! Insoles, heel pads, sole grips, boot inserts, they’re all a MUST!

  10. chocoNIKKI says:

I have just as many camis and slips as you! I’m forever-cold, and I really need them for the extra layer of warmth~! Oooh I love your black heels from H&M, I find their shoe quality is really great for their price!! =D

And the black leggings are so cute *wants*~~! I wear tights/leggings almost everyday, but they tend to be mostly the plain black/shiny black 100-200 danier ones~

  11. Alyse says:

    I envy the way you have everything so organized ;w;
I love those studded heels!! ♥

  12. Lolo says:

I have the same shorts!!! yayyy~ They are so perfect~
I love the white blouse~ It’s so pretty!

  13. Sakky says:

Hey Jenny, could you tell me where you bought your S-leg tights from perhaps? I’ve een looking everywhere for them, and I can’t find them. I can’t find Kumikki’s socks/ tights line either. :(

  14. Sakky says:

Awh, well that’s okay. I still can’t find Tsubasa’s line, but I’ll keep searching! Also, I did find a place where I can buy Kumikki’s! So that’s great! :) And, Thank you so much for answering and for the links to shops! ^3^

  15. Shmuberry says:

    The shorts and blouse are so gorgeous !! I wish I could still get my hands on those ;.;

  16. Linda says:

your closet staples are so timeless & cute!

  17. Miya says:

OMG I loveeeeeeee this post! i am super inspired now. I needdddd a maxi!!! I think every girl has her own list of ‘must haves’ and I certainly had some crossover with you. black tights FTW!

    • jenny says:

Agreed, not everyone will have the same. Like, they say you should have a “little black dress.” I have 2 but they are RARELY ever worn so I wouldn’t really say it’s something every girl needs you know?

  18. Tori says:

I’m in love with that white blouse & I so agree about the blazer~ I think everyone needs a classic black blazer in their closet ♥

  19. Bianca says:

you MUST be southern, guuuuuurl, SLIPS…haha! most girls don’t know about these, my mom is southern and would not let me leave the house with a skirt on EVER without a slip!

ps, i might need to copy the post…i LOVE this idea!!! LOVE ♥

    • jenny says:

Hahahahahaha, this never crossed my mind. I’m from MS, but didn’t realize the world of slips might not be so prevalent. Though to be fair it takes me FOREVER to find slips around here :( I even have slip skirts (2 white ones at different lengths, and 1 short 12″ black one :P) that I always wear with my skirts *paranoia*

  20. Amelia says:

These are so awesome. I especially love the satchel.

  21. Michelle says:

Ugh. I don’t know how I missed this post. I really need to quit being sick. My absence on the interwebs is killing me.

I absolutely love this post and thank you so very much for writing it! It helps me a lot considering that I am horrible (I should emphasize how horrible – HORRIBLE) at controlling my shopping habits. The reason being is because I’d buy crazy blouses that don’t really work with other things.

Layering? I fail at that the most. I’m trying to work on it. It’s hard to layer when you are always indoors (60-70 degrees indoors in comparison to 80-90 degrees outdoors). Clearly I have problems transitioning.

I will definitely invest in basics. I love everything that you’ve got! I also need to get me some slips, too. T_T
