Shibuhara 2001
Thursday, March 4th, 2010 | 46 Comments
I was going through some older issues of magazines the other day and my ancient and decrepit August 2001 issue of Cawaii caught my eye. Why?
SHIBUHARA!

It was amusing so I thought I’d scan in some pages!
Too bad Cawaii is now out of print. It would be fun to compare side-by-side the style differences. I have Popteen in mind for comparison since I feel it was closest matched to Cawaii. Some trends are the same. Black eyeliner, hot pink lips (which have been popular again recently,) and of course nail art. There are color contacts too but they aren’t circle lenses that print the color to the edge. There’s a whole little make section on how to match your eyemake to your colored contacts. Tans were big then. Big, big! Not being tan is a relatively new ideal in the world of “gals.” Some of these girls look older than their ages. Most are 18~22 but it’s such a contrast from how young gals look now. A shift from trying to look older to looking younger maybe.
I did notice an incredible lack of hair extensions. I had my assumptions that hair extensions didn’t really catch on until a few years later. It’s interesting to see the hair arranges using the girls’ thin hair. It’s quite obvious in the bangs! I kinda like it to be honest, LOL as a biased very thinned hair girl, hahahhaaa!

SHIBUhara Hurricane?!

Closer look~

The end
A big thank you to everyone who’s commented to me about my feature in Eleanor Zine. I appreciate it and so many great girls contributed to this!!!

Those scans bring back so many memories of when I first started getting into gal style
They really do look old compared to today’s gal. Although, they also look… much crazier.
I’m much more thankful for today’s styles even though back then, it was so simple and now… So much work needed!!!
Yea it does SEEM more high maintenance now but then again keeping a tan is a biotch so maybe it’s a trade off!
Such a blast to the past! It’s all so very tomboyish as opposed to the girly girl styles we see nowadays.
You’re on a blogroll roooollllll!
wow, thanks for this upload! so interesting to see how fashion moves with the years, what a throwback!
OH I spotted colored hoop earings and lot’s of side pony’s! I remember the days we used to wear that
Haha.
And whoah those blue colored lenses look really really blue! I kind of like.
Yes they remind me of the blue in the King Blue lenses now!
Oh my gosh this is just amazing! You are so awesome for scanning and posting these photos. They are very interesting to me because its from a time when I was too young to have interest in fashion, so it’s kinda a discovery for me haha^^
2001, it’s like the height of kogal right?
I can certainly see that now there is more emphasis on being younger and even thinner in comparison to these photos, and like you said, the hair is not huge or as quaffed. Their outfits are more simple/less layered and with beachy tropical feeling.
Wow, how neat!
I think that was the tail end of the real big kogal popularity and ganguro sorta moved in. And yea I noticed that too! WAY less anorexia chics! Though in the bikini section they’d pair a normal, healthy girl with some crazy emaciated skeleton who’s ribs I could see in EVERY picture. Like on purpose? It was very contrasting and bizarre. Dieting was still big b/c there was a huge diet section of course but not all the girls were little waifs. Though Cawaii wasn’t as bad as Egg or Popteen with the thinness. I kinda miss the magazine tbh D:
loooooooool! did they just do a close up on the girl’s boob! and say “point up”?! LMFAO!!!!
memories…I’m not old enough to be saying that…
omg i can’t believe we used to dress like that! eew. when it said close up of the pictures i actually said “NOOOO!” and possibly woke a few people…o_O
i see overalls are back in too…OMG the hairdo with a pony and two braids!!! I used to wear that to school!!!
I know! I lol’d at the tiny ponytails + updo! I so wore that a few times myself, hahahaaa
this was very interesting. thanks so much for sharing this, its amazing comparing gal style then, and now. im still so amazed on how much gal style evolved. i very much love the hairstyles in the scans, even without all the extensions, it seems more real, natural looking — even with its simplicities, they are really cute. i like the tan look too. very beachy, and fun.
Yea I’d like to see less extension heavy hair arranges myself.
man you could write a research paper given the amount of research you’ve done!!
This is hilarious! Haha, I think the models now must be 30-something… How time flies….
The makeup method hasn’t changed that much though. And there were many cute overalls
This is so weird to look at! Even the overall look of the models they used is waaay different! I think I prefer fashion the way it is now, though I’ll say it was very simplistic back then!
I LOVE IT
and yet, i cringe a little. but i mostly love it.
thaaaank youuu for scanning these in jenny!!
i love how different it looks, but it’s still obviously gal-style…ANCIENT?!
in the fashion world it is. all the short tops omg~~
and i LOVE the tans. i’m not tan, but i still love to look at the girls who keep up with their tanning~ haha especially when their hair and skin colour are the same.
Haahaa love with cringe, yes yes!! Agreed.
Wow! What an amazing entry! I was looking over my old magazines (from the same time period) over Christmas but it was really great to see all your comparisons to the styles going on now. They really did look older with the type of makeup etc. compared to now where everyone is trying to look younger. I really enjoyed this. You have a great blog! Hope you don`t mind if I add you to my blogroll
Oh no, no feel free & thanks so much!!
v
wooow. haha. everything looks so….old? back when all this was going on I was like…6? haha. it looks like midriff was a lot more popular then than now.
eeeh?! how did I missed the entry on you being featured in eleanorzine?! I went to read it, it was fun reading the feature ^-^ I think I prefer the current gal’s make-up and fashion. lol. You’re right, they look so old.
wow.. haha what a contrast!!
the girls look so tan compared to the current models of popteen haha
i literally squirmed when i saw the girl with the pins on her bikini
i think i’d be scared the pins would unpin themselves and poke me so theres definately no way i’d wear something like that lol
i actually like the hair more back then then what it is like now
BUT I STILL LLIKE IT LOL
idk to me it just seems more natural
Oh lawd don’t even bring up the idea of the pins unfastening!! Hahhahah!
I agree with the hair. I do love today’s looks but they seem so hard to achieve easily compared to their old arranges
Wow it seems so far, the styles were so different, i totally forgot about it x)
But now I want my skin to stay fair haha ~
But now i remember how tan the girls wanted to be
I also wanted to be that tan before
woooow early 2000’s! i remember it~
i see some link to today’s shibuhara but much prefer today’s ones better~ especially with the hair and tops!! bikini top + pins = D:
Yea I wish I had a better idea of the harajuku scene then. I do have an old 2001 CUTiE and it’s full of braids and really boyish looks so I can sorta see the mash up in Cawaii.
ohhh cool! i didn’t start with the japanese magazines until 2004/2005?
but my first magazine was cawaii borrowed from a japanese girl at school
I guess today, the newer gals would call you ‘epic fail’ if you dress up this way
Or this is just kind of German culture, grumbling about everything that is post modern *lolz*
anyway, I kinda like it! because they look (though they still wear lots of make && are tanned and contactes and uargs xD) more natural in there very own way; yeah, I like it xD
Hahahah agreed with the “epic fail” that would totally be the case IMO too!
For some reason I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it is xD A few of them would only need a bit of fixing up to be in the current mags tbh.
LOL! Everything sure is improving…
But there’s this magazine called SCawaii right? Maybe it’s a very good comparison between two of this.
Yea, SCawaii is the older sister version but even when Cawaii was still in print in ‘08 SCawaii wasn’t very similar so I don’t think it’s a fair match up since SCawaii is less gal and more onee-kei. Good suggestion though
… wow, ‘tanned’ really was the look back then!
I remember looking at magazines like this during the time that they came out, and I thought the styles were so amazing. Now, they kinda make me cringe.
But it’s still cool to look at! This makes me want a tan. D;
Totally agreed~
Raging gal! It’s been so long since I’ve seen it.
Wow, 2001! I was about to say “But the fashion looks so 90’s!” I can’t believe it’s already 2010.
Just a random note, have you ever seen the SUPER GALS anime? It’s pretty ridiculous; all about girls taking their Gal style fashion and personality! Ha! Watched a few episodes with a friend for the lols
I remember that anime!!! Never really watched the series though.
Wow those are some SHORT-shorts in pic two
Did you say these were from 2001? They look so dated don’t they? Makes me feel old…
I know I can’t believe when I realize I was 17 when this magazine came out so me & these girls are near the same ago now, LOL… we’re ooooooooooold! jkjkjk
WOW 2001~! I feel so old, as Ys said the pics look so dated compared to what we’re seeing now.. OTL
I’m glad the tan fashion isn’t such a big thing anymore, I’m so pale that it used to suck trying to maintain a tan when I was into having one.
Some of those hairstyles are super crazy looking, but I love the girl on the left (eating watermelon) in the fifth picture, I’d so still try out that style in the weekends …
Fascinating to see the differences!
haha I would love to see a time line of the different fashion/make up trends in detail
Woah! Thats amazing! But Strangely enough I find myself loving the old style more than the new! Viva La Overallls! Haha!
wow! so much more tanned… style is definitely different but still cute!
wow…2001 doesn’t seem that long ago (then again i was in elementary school), but the styles were so different. they look so dated, but it’s really neat! Compared to styles in the magazines today, they are very simple and plain. It’s as if fashion in japan did a complete 360! It makes today’s styles look complicated
Thank you for scanning these in Jenny! It was nice to see things from the past
Amazing how that’s like almost 10 years ago now!!
I didn’t even know Shibuhara style had been out that long… Interesting!
The hair arranges are TOTALLY much easier too, haha~ you should so do a post about the evolution of gal if you ever have the time! These old magazine scans make me so nostalgic
& feel so old, haha;o;SO early millennium!!! I remember those visors were so cool…, they also didnt seem to care too much about tooth whitening either…
