First Monthly Issue of PopSister

The Sister models~
Tsubasa Masuwaka (24) (Blog)
Kana Hoshino (26) (Blog)
Jun Komori (24) (Blog)
Yui Kanno (22) (Blog)
Wei Son (20) (Blog)
Tomoko Higuchi (23) (Blog)
Eri Aoki (21) (Blog)

So PopSister is now a monthly magazine! I’ve been waiting a long time for this day! The first issue of PopSister ever was released last year, the June 2009 issue.

It’s hard to compare this issue with that first one, since anything new & fresh has an unfair advantage in dazzling you, haahaa. I do feel there was a slight imbalance with harajuku brands in relation to the Shibuya brands used (at least ad-wise I guess), though harajuku brands are bit on the more expensive side in comparison to Shibuya clothing! Ha! So I’m sorta at a crossroads with that opinion, lol.

I hope to see more ストリート and ゆるカジ in the next issue! I feel this issue might have played it a little safe perhaps ~ In comparison to the last 2 issues and the Popteen inserts. But it’s all good~

This issue was much heavier on the hair arrange section though! LOVED THAT! The past 2 PopSister issues focused more on just the idea of mixing up styles, shibuhara and all that, but this issue sorta changed its focus to introductions and hair arrange. There were also a crap-ton of collab-ads. Not surprising really, I mean it being the first monthly and all. But there were definitely more than in an average issue of Popteen.

I loved Kana’s coordinates for the hair section! I wish these had been in the magazine separately! Especially the Snoopy coordinate below, so cute! The hair arrange section had most of the common current styles~ braids, buns, and a couple of full wigs~

The above arrange was in Popteen last month too in the student hair section or whatever. They had this look on Tsubasa & a few others in this issue as well~ It’s definitely an easy to achieve arrange. It came off as a bit silly to me at first, but it’s growing on me now haarhaar!

The phrase sister-kei has been thrown around a lot lately, especially by the models. It’s cute~ sister models, sister style, sister this~ sister that! SISTER EVERYTHING!

This is also like in my top 5 of all time favorite magazine covers~~

I wonder if they’ll keep Tsubasa on the cover in similar fashion with what they’ve done with Kumicky on Popteen?? I don’t mind, and I sorta find the old Popteen covers without Kumicky kinda fugs (ok, I’m getting off topic here!)

I really liked Jun’s hair here. I might start wearing my bangs like this as they grow out! She has a giant forehead like meeeeeeeee GAAAHAHAHAHAHA!

There were quite a few shots of Tsubasa with her bangs pulled to the side too~ It’s interesting to see since I’m so conditioned to her look with bangs.

The street snap section was interesting. *_* I think it gives a good idea of what they’re looking for to represent the magazine’s style. :good: In a more established magazine I see street snaps as a mirror displaying the magazine’s trends being played out or put into action, but since PopSister is new these feel more like… what PopSister is looking for trend-wise. Did that make any sense? LOOOL Many “vintage” looks were snapped. Though I do like vintage I sometimes feel, because it’s such a popular American style already, it can feel a bit too familiar or boring. But on the other hand it’s definitely one of the most attainable styles since it’s popular in the US already so key items can easily be found which is a blessing. I skipped around with the street snaps’ looks. You can view the full pages in this entry.

Some more looks :good:

Tie dye trend~~

I would agree with you that the snapshots are about “what PopSister is looking for” rather than how the style is being applied on the street. Anyways, glad that PopSister has Wei Son and Yui! I like them so much!

Really nice post!
Do you think it’s possible to subscribe to the Pop Sister Magazine? I don’t find anything on google… X__O!
Thanks for your answer!

It is possible, because I have one, though it’s through a local Japanese bookstore. If you live in the DC area let me know. Outside of that I’m not so sure because it’s brand new. Maybe soon fujisan.com will offer it for subscription. Until then you can (or could, maybe they sold out) get it on royalquartz.com or ebay or amazon.jp maybe.

Fabulous! I am so picking this up as soon as I can. What a great mix of models, the age range is perfect because I think those are ages when models start really understand their own style and how to hold their body.

I love the one hair arrange picture it’s like “How to arrange: put on wig.” ! I like that idea

The street snaps are really great! On the streets you can really see so many cute girls, adding their own personal taste/twist on the current trends. Although it’s a bit intimadating to walk around amongst soo many girls who look like models haha

Thank you so much for taking the time to scan, edit and post all these photos!

I totally agree about the age ranges! Though I was surprised Wei Son was so young but her personal style is a bit more developed than many of the other Popteen girls her age.

Wow. I really love that 3rd hairstyle! I’ll have to try sometime! I’ve done a similar style with the first one. That’s my fav part of magazines though, the make up and hair tutorials. =] Mmmhmm

Hey! I was wondering since you like bath stuff so much — I’m always into making organic/homemade things so, if you wanted, I could make you some bath salt. =] Just gotta order some oil essences, but haven’t decided on what scents. Lol I’ll be ordering from Puritan, so check out their site, lemme know if there’s any that interest you. My sister wants the vanilla, and I’m undecided so…yeah. Haha.

question! What’s the target audience of popteen and popsister?

(Comments wont nest below this level)
jenny said
May 6, 2010 @ 8:32 pm

Popteen is for teens who like gyaru fashion, PopSister is for girls who have “graduated” into their 20’s for a more adult look that mixes gyaru fashion with other styles as well. I think PopSister’s description was like, for girls who have matured and have brands they already like and want to bring that into new trends. Something like that. You asked this question in the most random place LOL (as a response to someone’s iPhone comment? LOL!)

Wei Son really looks like Nana Kitade - I thought it was her!
It’s good that they can show Harajuku brands worn in a Shibuya style?
It’s heart breaking when the same amount of fabric is double the price though! TT_TT

Not sure whether to download your scans now or wait to buy in person, it HAS TO sell out. hmm..
Download!
Gotta find where all these wigs come from!

I just love love love all the different fashions presented there! I especially love the different hair styles! Makes me really want to grow my hair out long. I love how they combine frills and funk together to create such unique looks (at least unique compared to the clones I see everyday walking around).

I am really excited about this, I must rush to the japanese market to pick up the first issue. i feel so ashamed to be enthralled into popteen since I’m almost 10 years older than their target age (i just came to that realization the other day DX)

I hope they keep the looks suitable for me so I dont look like a kid experimenting but I look like an adult with a definite style. I love tsubasa hair!! yay for curlie curls! I must have that corrdinate! I want to see that hairstyle on you girlie! I bet its cute as always

You know what I love? Is the Braid wrap around the head! I think those are just too cute! I also love big hats!

I also agree to an extent with the “vintage”! I thought Popsister and popteen weren’t into the vintage look!?? I don’t know, i love vintage-inspired clothing, but the only thing i don’t like about it is that it is too familiar. And I also agree! You can get vintage-inspired clothing at Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal, Forever 21… Those big American Stores have it. :p

Anyway, thanks for sharing this ^___^

Well most of them are Popteen models but they’re definitely not the skinniest of the Popteen models (like Kumicky who’s like 83 lbs.) I think because this is for an older audience they’re definitely going for the healthier look !
