So You Want to Watch Doctor Who

Doctor Who
Where To Begin?

So if you follow my Tumblr you probably see a hefty amount of Doctor Who spamming. A lot of people have been asking me about wanting to get into it themselves and sorta, “Where to begin?” So here’s my short answer to that question!

Doctor Who is a BBC show that’s been in production (on & off) since 1963. It plays in the US on the BBC America channel. There have now been Eleven Doctors. So, which “series” do you start from!? The First Doctor!?

I say, if you can, start at the 2005 Series, Series 1, that begins on the Ninth Doctor. The show is currently awaiting Series 6 to begin.

If you don’t have the time to watch that much TV then you can jump in at Series 2 which begins with the Tenth Doctor. Actually it begins on the Christmas Special leading in first…

If even then that’s too much TV, jump in at Series Four’s specials. This will lead you in with the Tenth Doctor and intro you into Eleven before Series 5 begins.

And of course you can start at the most recent series, Series 5 with the Eleventh Doctor.

A special note. Whichever Doctor you start with will become YOUR Doctor. That’ll make sense when the next regeneration takes place. *I’m looking at you Series 5 only watchers

So in a nutshell there it is! Any more questions please ask!
Which Series did I start on? Half way through Series 2!
Which Series have I seen? All since Series 1 (2005) and then the Fourth Doctor in “The City of Death” and the movie special “The Five Doctors”
Who do you ship? Currently? Rory/Eleven but forever Ten/Donna.

So I hope that was helpful to any new watchers! Of course if you’re British this was probably beyond redundant and maybe even a bit laughable, lol, but I’m glad there’s becoming a bigger following in the States & beyond. It’s a fun show! It’s corny, geeky, and at times gimmicky but it’s also heart-warming, cute, full of adventure, crazy addictive, and sometimes a bit scary… DON’T BLINK.

Here’s the preview trailer for Series 5. Series 5, for those already watching the Series, was scary because Ten left suddenly and painfully and Eleven was much younger AND new head writer…
it cheesy, LOL It was made as a 3D Theatrical trailer~

In non-TV news not much going on here. Had to buy and program a new router after the snow storm. All the power fluxes finally killed it. It was SO old omg, it was running basically non-stop for 7 years!! So the upgrade was a bit nice! I got one with longer range ~ Set that up last night.

Also received a pretty Shibuya postcard of 109 decked out for Christmas! It’s so pretty~~~ Though I sent similar postcards on my last 2 trips… looks like the SAME angle!? They must have a mounted camera OR mount a camera in the same spot each photo they take for these postcards! I dunno though, LOL.

Lastly, my current nails are using these colors! Nude base, pink glitter tips. I love nude nail color right now~

lol I happened to see this new entry pop up as I was replying to your deco calculator post

Some of my friends are into Doctor Who but it seems quite strange! I didn’t really understand any of the episodes I’ve seen. ^^; Maybe you have to watch it in order??

Oh and share your nails with us!

jenny said
January 29, 2011 @ 10:18 pm

I think it helps seeing it in order *nods nods* since they tend to keep a lot of the plot-line going, but with the latest Series 5 it was a real HACK OFF type change so to start off with it would be less confusing. Head writer changed so they don’t have a lot of callback. Um, but I’m getting off on a tangent.

I blinked and The Angels got me T_T

Anyways, this was very helpful!!! So thank you! Yes, the 11th Doctor will be my Doctor because I’ve only ever seen that series ha ha. But I am willing to change and see all the fuss of the 10th Doctor!

Muahahaha. Also, to answer your question before: I *had* BBC until we cut off our cable so .. yeah.. Don’t slut your wrists.

Hi Jenny~
David Tennant has to be my favorite doctor. I guess it’s only because he’s the first and only Doctor that I’ve watched x) I caught “Doctor Who” on the syfy channel a couple of times and I swear, I cringed throughout most of the episodes that I watched xD! Since I didn’t watch the 10th Doctor series in order, I am a bit attached to the Doctor x Donna ;(

& *gasp* has there been misuse of your photo?! You should be compensated~!

jenny said
January 29, 2011 @ 10:29 pm

Yes Ten is my favorite too because that’s the first Doctor I watched too! I will forever miss Donna omg :(

Ah no, they didn’t use my photo, I just thought she sent me the same postcard I sent on my past trips except it’s a Christmas version instead which surprised me!

My dad says he used to watch Doctor Who when he was a kid and that he would be a little scared…he said it was strange and abstract, but that’s why he liked it~
He had no idea they were still showing it~!

jenny said
January 29, 2011 @ 10:30 pm

My Mom didn’t either! She said she used to watch it too only she caught the new series and LOVED it. I think for a kid it can be scary. Actually some episodes would scare me a little too, they use so much suspense.

I saw that post card!

David Tennant is my Doctor too! I started watching early in the 2nd season. When I caught episodes of the 9th Doctor on PBS - I couldn’t help to compare him to the 10th Doctor, even though he came first. Donna has to be one of my favorite companions…followed by Rory. Can’t wait for the next season to start!
I got my sister & brother hooked on it, at first they just thought it was me being weird. But, I couldn’t convince her to watch Torchwood.
At work we did a “Secret Santa” gift exchange during the holidays, so we had to fill out a list of our likes/dislikes. I listed Doctor Who as one of my favorite TV shows - only 2 people knew what I was talking about and one was a Brit.

It’s such a transition right?! but it sorta explains a lot of Ten’s feelings seeing Nine even after! I saw Series 1 after finishing Series 2 and found myself liking Nine a lot as well, but in a different way \/

Awww they wouldn’t go for “Touch”wood LOL, that show is pretty provocative but I love Torchwood too!! I got my friend hooked on DW as well with just 3 episodes while she was staying with me and they were Series 1 episodes!

Marina said

Ten is what I started with too (ooh, mr.tennant~ lol). I had heard about it a lot, and happened to catch a few episodes (on other’s televisions, we don’t have any sort of cable), and liked it. So eventually we got digital versions of series 2-4 and are slowly watching through those. It’s a fun show!

Haaahaaa. Ah ikr! I have no idea. At first I just thought Brits say series instead of season bug the old episodes are called seasons! So I haven’t s clue. I think they just wanted a semi-fresh start though they keep up the reality of the past seasons.

Oh also it’s because some doctors last for multiple seasons/series. Nine only did 1 season but Ten did 3 plus a ton of specials.

Haha, I love Doctor Who! My Doctor was the Ninth Doctor too! I loved that season so much, it was the first and only Doctor Who season broadcasted in my country and afterwards I’ve followed it on the Internet.

I kinda miss the subtitles ;_; Oh well, I understand most of it without subs.

I feel nude colours are really in this season. I’ve been checking out clear nail polish and orange/nude lipstick/lipgloss/tints all January ;_;

I’m glad you like it too! Yeah they started broadcasting the 2005 series a year or 2 after the original air dates here. It jumped networks too but slowly got popular enough that it’s airing only a few episodes behind here. Though, it only airs on a channel that isn’t available to everyone which sucks :( I confess I saw the first few holiday specials thanks to the internet because the US used to not air them =_=;;;;

ooooh ok this is really helpful. i keep going back & forth about watching this show…recently my good college friends have started to watch it (they started on nine) and they LOVE it.

if it’s really true that which ever one you watch first becomes “your” doctor, then idek where i want to begin…i think ten is the cutest lol but i like starting shows at the beginning. what to doooo?

jenny said
January 30, 2011 @ 8:24 pm

Start at Nine… it’s just one season, maybe you’ll find Ten a better “fit” Ten doesn’t get erally really good until Series 3 into Series 4 OMFG SERIES 4 IS THE BEST lol. I could ramble forever.

You know at first I refused to watch this stupid show but found myself sucked in as Mike watched it LOL

You ship Rory/Eleven?! I thought I was the only one! xD

I started with Series 1. I actually remember when it first aired. My grandma made us all sit in the living-room and watch, haha. In primary (elementary?) school our headmistress used to dedicate entire assemblies to the series, and when it started again she showed us a slideshow of the new Darleks! We thought she was crazy!

Out of interest, any River theories? I don’t believe she’s his wife - it’s too obvious, haha - and I can’t ship them together anyway eek.

jenny said
January 30, 2011 @ 8:30 pm

*JUMPS UP AND DOWN* YES!!! They should just ditch Amy right!? I love Rory & Eleven! I really did NOT like Rory at first, it was very gtfo but he grew on me as Amy became more annoying. And Rory really calls the Doctor out on his sh*t like how he’s dangerous because he makes people want to impress him *0*

Hard to ship River right?! I did like her interactions with Ten. But with Eleven.. he’s so much younger feature-wise lol. At first I thought maybe it was his Mom! Then her dialogue got too, um, gross for that! Then I thought a professor or school teacher or something (god I don’t know!) Then I breifly thought it was Amy. Mike has a good theory I’m getting on board with, that she’s Amy & Rory’s daughter???!!!! Obviously she kills him right!? But forever kills or just a new regeneration?! I we find out this series!! Scary to think…. what if TWELVE IS COMINGGGGGGG

I totally get what you mean about the doctor you start with becoming your doctor, my parents are from England so I’ve grown up with a lot of English telly. I started with the 3rd doctor (Jon Pertwee) and also really loved the 4th (Tom Baker, he made me love Jelly Babies and knit long scarves) and always find myself harkening back to their times and watching their specials. But if you want to know why people refer to Doctor Who sfx as crummy, watch some of the specials from that time, they were really something else, and I think something newer viewers might not get from the franchise is that sense of creativity (because trust me, some of the sfx you really had to use your imagination) since the show now has a bigger budget. Overall, I must thank you for spreading the word on one of the best shows out there!

First time ever commenting after reading your blog for months, but I just had to chip in when I see another Dr Who related post. ^^

I’ve been watching it since since 2005, so I will forever love Christopher Eccleston x Billie Piper.
David Tennant x Billie Piper comes a close second though. Can’t deny that seeing a fellow Scot playing the Dr was so good to see

I recently got into Doctor Who because of a friend who also had a lot of Doctor Who reblogs on tumblr. She tweeted about this post of yours, and it really helped me a lot!

Watched Blink first and then moved on to The Christmas Invasion as per my friend’s recommendation… but Rose’s sentiments in TCI made me really curious about the Ninth! So I’m thinking about watching from series one or finishing the whole Tenth era first then watch series one. anyway Thank you for this post!
