半身浴 Suggestions

Sunday, June 20th, 2010 | 91 Comments

I’ll skip the usual “god not Sunday ” rant!
I was feeling crummy this morning but went out and walked 4.8 miles around downtown DC which turned that frown upside down

So today I got my engagement & wedding rings back from being re-sized!! They were too big now~ but I was scared of jumping the gun of getting them re-sized; in case I gained back any of the weight I had lost. So I waited~ and waited~ and now it’s been nearly a year!! But I didn’t gain any back So Mike and I both got ours re-sized (he’s lost nearly 40 lbs this year! :whoafreak

It feels so wonderful to wear my engagement ring again~~!! I had stopped wearing it nearly 6 months ago because it started to fly off :F My wedding band I’ve been keeping on by wearing a smaller ring my grandmother gave me, blocking it from falling off.

And I want to congratulate any of my friends who are still using livestrong.com too!! I still use it too, out of habit , and out of obsessive need to track things because OCD is fun hahhaaahhaaa! But it’s been 1 year since I found that website & it really did change my life. My ring size is a full size smaller now~ couldn’t have done it without livestrong

OK, so sometimes people ask how I can manage to take such long hot baths (the kind suggested in magazines, especially in diet pages,) and here’s an example how! I read magazines! I not only read them I mark outfits I want to scan in a whatnot too. I bring a nice big cup of cold green tea or cold apple vinegar drink and I always use a bath salt or bubble bath~ I just love baths! I always have! It’s my #1 way of relieving stress too! If I have a seriously crap day I’m gonna end it with a long hot bath. The other day I was in there for 80 minutes!

Most of the diet bath topics suggest staying in a sweaty hot bath for at least 30minutes~ Kumicky is seen here demonstrating reading Popteen in the tub! Haahaa~

30 minutes to 2 hours… I’ve NEVER made it 2 hours, I’d assume you’d have to add some hot water to the tub again! haahaa! I tend to shoot for an hour but on average I’m usually at 45 minutes

Also using an iPod to play music helps! I have one of those cheap $5 portable speakers in my bathroom for my old iPod nano. I put on relaxing music or even nature sounds. One in particular is just a 40 minute track of night sounds (crickets, frogs ) haahaa and when it finishes I know I’ve been in the tub for 40 minutes! And always bring in a cold water or other zero calorie drink with you~ please don’t pass out OK!!!

Wow, 38% make it an hour! Next is 27% at 30minutes. Who are these crazy 8% of people lasting for 3 hours though!? LOOOOOL maybe my life’s too busy for such hopes!

I have to admit I’ve used my cell phone a lot during the long baths, haahaa~ I know it’s foolish because my blackberry isn’t waterproof, LOL! Sorta pressing my luck sometimes~ But I tend to hang over the side of the tub and type away on emails and surf CROOZ blogs ‘n such!

I also do leg massage in a hot bath because I feel it’s the easiest time to help bring down the day’s swelling! You don’t need any cellulite roller or anything either~ just twist and massage~ I SWEAR this keeps my legs looking skinnier than when I DON’T do it! Plus it really relieves any stress and soreness in your legs. :good: 5 minutes of the massage should do the trick! It does take a few days of doing this before you’ll notice a difference though.

You can also do a little light exercise to pass the time like Jun here! haahaa~~

Haahaa and I ALWAYS take a long hot bath after a day of overeating~~ it really settles my stomach too.

While on the subject of dieting (sorta) I thought I’d share these funny suggestions of using the color blue to control your appetite!! Blue is supposed to be a naturally unappetizing color because not many foods are blue in nature!! Well~ so they say So here are some suggestions from Popteen!

  • Buy blue dinnerware for eating off of!
  • Wear blue-shaded sunglasses while eating!!
  • Add blue food coloring to your food such as rice!!!

I changed my computer’s wallpaper at work to a blue shaded wallpaper….. I can safely say this DID NOT curb my urge to snack at my desk in any way, shape, or form! HAAHAA! That said, I never have found that blue cotton candy flavored ice cream very appetizing looking and I feel pukey when I see kids eating it! ha!

I think I might be weird because I find that blue rice appetising LOL! But maybe because I’m thinking about it was sweet stick rice I haven’t taken a bath in over a year, since I last had chicken pox and had an oatmeal bath and for some reason my fingers always peel with they’re pruney which is a bit gross but I do love bath bombs! I think I’ll try out the massaging though to see if it really makes a difference for me!

Hahah! Some of those tips are HILARIOUS.

Love your blog! I’m so glad I found it.

Do you live in Japan? I’ve been to Japan once - such a fun trip! I was just 13 though. I’d really love to go again. I live in SE Asia for part of the yr though so it shouldn’t be so hard to squeeze in another trip!

I love taking baths too, I just hate it when I’m on my period and cannot take one :(
While in the tub, I read a book or something, but I always manage to ge it wet, can’t help it lol.

I’d love to try the long hot bath after work everyday but unfortunately I have one of those shower stall type bathtubs that isn’t really conducive to baths, mou ;o; I think I will try the leg massage though! It should work once you get out of a hot shower, no?

woow good job at being on lifestrong for 1yr!! i’ve tried to start using it a couple of times (always inspired by you) but it’s…too…confusing…oh -_-;;;

but yeah! it’s acutally offically been a year since i started my hardcore dieting, and this october will be my 1yr of constant exercise! it’s so amazing to look back on photos from a year ago…but also sort of mortifying

also, VERY VERY VERY jealous of your tub. i’m going to make sure i have a bathtub in whatever future home i have. i love to take baths; i used to stay in the bath for +1hr when i was a kid because i’d read books and just loose track of time haha

jenny said
June 21, 2010 @ 8:01 pm

I find the “new version” they have at livestrong super confusing!! I always hit “classic myplate” still hahahaa!

I know what you mean about photos!!! I like seeing them b/c I’m like “whoa, seriously so different” but then it’s like “D: ……. omg what took me so long!?” Especially my skin! My skin WAS SO BAD from eating junk food all day long!

Thanks for this! I’ve always kinda wondered about the baths. But I do have a question, how hot does the water have to be for it to really work? Like I don’t have to put the hot water to the hottest it will go right? Haha

jenny said
June 21, 2010 @ 8:03 pm

Hot! Build up a tolerance for sure! Hot enough that you slowly have to get in but not so hot that you’re BURNING haahaa~ I use nearly the hottest of hot and it’s still no where near as hot as the actual hot spring water was when I visited!

I love long baths, I tend to doze off so I can easily make 1+ hour. However, I don’t live alone and people come banging on the door.

I’m gonna start doing leg massage :O

I would advise you to do East-Asian diets instead of curbing your appetite with colour-psychology. Your body needs food, so fasting is not recommended.

Fill 1/2 to 3/4 of a plate with rice and the rest with chicken/meat/fish and eat until you feel full.
And snack, snack A LOT. This will speed up your metabolism.

I myself is 173 cm and weight 50 kg, I’m on my way down to 49, lol.

June 21, 2010 @ 8:17 pm

I really can’t swallow them! Eeew. But I love rice, I’m not going to try that ever.

Ahh….baths. I can only soak in the tub when I go on holidays, and the hotels have them.
I will install a bath tub in my future home with the bf!

bloomzy said
June 21, 2010 @ 7:11 am

p.s. I adore baths too, and wheras I had heard of something like this I don’t really know if it actually works - what do you think?

Oh and have you heard of chilli lotion, or something like that?!
My lil sister bought some from Taiwan and she puts in on her legs and arms and it’s supposed to help you lose weight. She said it almost burns, but I guess it must be aiming for the same effect as the baths you have.

jenny said
June 21, 2010 @ 8:30 pm

Yes chili lotion!!!!! I’ve used some, I also used germanium salt rub (that I meant to mention but forgot LOL.) Haahaa, it’s sorta just a gimmick IMO though I do think the NIVEA firming gel (and probably the Japanese firming gels) work a bit.

As for if the hot baths work….
I sorta accept it with a grain of salt. I HAVE read that very hot (and even more so, VERY COLD) baths increase your hate rate as your body kicks in trying harder to regulate your temperature.

And hot baths do cause you to sweat so you can easily lose water weight at least (lol.)

I will say I think some (not all) of the sweat bath salts (like Bison’s & 炎赤の湯) do help stimulate your body with chili powder that makes you sweat MORE than just sitting in the same hot bath water.

I could rationalize how it “probably doesn’t really work much” all day long, but at the end of the day, after eating a bunch of pizza, I’ll be running to a steaming hot bath and purposely sitting in it for at least an hour’s time!! Ya know… just because~ why not

bloomzy said
June 22, 2010 @ 5:18 am

I had heard about the heart rate claim too. I went to a spa and the hot and cold thing was really big, although it involved going into a boiling hot sauna and then rubbing ice all over your body haha

I’m definitely going to give it a try. Thanks for this post

about the 1 hour or more in the tub.

I can imagine it happening in those old tubs in japan that are heated from the below all the time.. I haven’t been to a new tub though, maybe those work somewhat similar ?

That way the water will not get cold as fast
Smart japanese~

doyou feel the taking a hot bath thing actually helps to weight down? =o It sounds somewhat not believeable ;D Too easy !!

jenny said
June 21, 2010 @ 8:33 pm

I don’t think you could wage your beats on losing an easy 5 lbs just from sweating in a hot bath for an hour each night~ but baths are often connected to relaxation and healing~ so if you like baths already what’s the harm in just enjoying it longer and hotter I guess!

I don’t put much stock into it’s total ability to burn calories but you’re definitely burning more sweating in a hot bathtub for an hour than you are lying on the couch staring at a television!

I’ve never been much of a long bath girl, mainly because I get so bored just… relaxing and soaking! I keep meaning to use up some the soaking salts I got the last time I visited Japan but now it’s been so hot outside (95+ degrees!) that cold showers seem more enjoyable.

Maybe I’ll wait until winter (and then I’ll try those “hot” soaking salts you mentioned awhile ago)!

THANKS for this post!! Diet inspiration, go!! I needed that!

Part of why my diet was always up and down was because I couldn’t resign myself to counting calories my entire life. Were you able to go off the diet and not have to keep exactly at your suggested “maintain calorie limit”? I think as long as I can get there at that limit it should be okay to eat a cookie sometimes and even if I do gain some weight, it’s easier to loose a little. *sigh* It’s just impossible when my family cooks/wants to go out as they often do… Not to rant too much, but my family and friends hate when I’m like “I can’t eat this” or “I can’t go out” and it’s created some tension, which makes me slip up more…

/Anyway/ this may be weird, but I love your bath posts, too. I love the idea of baths, just the water only reaches about half-way up my torso…When I move, a deep bath is a must. I love your music/drink/magazine combo, though, sounds so relaxing. b I am going to try this, though, on nights when I have more time! At least keeping the AC off in the car helps a sweat diet during the day too ;P

AND LOL @ THE GIRL WITH BLUE RICE. I’D MAKE THAT FACE TOO. THAT SHIT LOOKS NASTY.

Sorry for the long comment! Wasn’t purposefully trying to make up for how short & lame they usually are. LOL

jenny said
June 21, 2010 @ 8:53 pm

I know what you mean. When I was dieting last summer I was so scared “I’LL HAVE TO COUNT CALORIES MY WHOLE LIFE!” But alas~ it wasn’t true !! I only cont. to fill out livestrong b/c I love to see my data charts, hahahhaaaa!

There are days I just don’t get around to filling it out but I know I’m eating an OK amount to maintain. It’s like… hum~ I get fuller now and didn’t go back to drinking non-diet sugary drinks or candy bars. I still snack on apples & carrots & 100 calorie packs b/c that’s just my normal food. So I haven’t gained any of it back but I’m not a SLAVE to some diet either. I splurge when I want to, I eat healthier when I want to and it’s been all staying even.

I think the big change was what I was choosing to eat. I was a total slave to sugar. TOTAL SLAVE. I don’t crave that like I used to and that was probably the biggest change. Plus now when I do splurge my whole body feels it and I feel physically fatigued! Haahaa~ helps keep me in line I suppose! I’m not saying you won’t EVER “fall off the wagon” but you’ll realize it now and be able to more easily correct it! Once you reach your goal that motivation will be more than enough to put down the chocolate chip cookies. Bananas are just as sweet but have vitamin value!

Yea, family & friends will never accept you saying “no” or complaining. What I did when I was dieting was just go along and try to make THE BEST calculated choice without mentioning I can’t eat this or that. So if we’d end up at Long John Silvers I’d order the steamed shrimp scampi or cucumber roll sushi when going out for Japanese (it’s one of the lowest calorie sushi’s.) Just research THE CRAP outta the places they tend to go to so you can always pick the lowest calorie option.

No worries, these scans are all for half-bathing (where you’re sitting and the water only reaches your torso )

I like when you leave long comments. It’s fun for me to share our experiences. I feel a lot of ppl are really rude to me about having lost the weight. I won’t get into a deep tangent about it but girls can be bitches and be very demotivating when all you need is a little support.

Courtney said
June 22, 2010 @ 2:03 pm

That’s great news!! …Phew, haha
I’ve really missed cooking and being creative in the kitchen, making meals with my boyfriend and I always felt guilty eating my parents’ food… Now I know as long as can keep healthy habits like yours most of the time (ie, just not running for sweets at first sign) I can more or less stay where I want to be. b Yeah, I had the same problem. When I used to take days off of my diet I’d go crazy for anything sweet because I’d been obsessing over it all week long. I’m much better about it now knowing that if I /want/ a candy bar I can have half or so but still have to be willing to sacrifice more filling food, so I want it less.

Ah, that’s a good idea!! I do try to guess at restaurants but sometimes even salads come out entirely humongous and then they want to split an appetizer or something. Needless to say, it’s difficult! I have been trying to ask some places if they have nutritional info when we go, but that’s not always available. =/

Ah~ I didn’t quite notice that. Yay! Maybe I should just do that instead of trying to soak my entire body in vain, lol

Me too. The more we talk, it seems like the more we notice we have in common…personality-wise but also situationally. =)

Really? I would think most girls would envy your results from the diet? Or were you thinner than them to begin with?? lol

I love having long hot baths! I usually only make it to 30 mins though~’

I like to listen to Jeff Buckley… and have been keeping old paperbacks for reading (I pick them up cheaply at 2nd hand stores!) Right now my bathtime reads are Pride & Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, and a couple of old Cawaii magazines. I really want to start giving that massage in the bath routine a try… at my age I need all the extra help I can get!!!

I’m not sure about that “blue” thing, but I also heard that RED activates hunger!

PS I’m a Livestrong addict too, although I’ve been off the net for nearly a month so am out of practise~~~! But it really does help keep track of everything. I couldn’t have maintained my current weight without it! Now just to lose some more~~~!

i am not on livestrong, but i am on weightwatchers, and i’ve lost 11 lbs on it!! i’m so excited because i’ve never been able to lose weight. I’ve found that I get fuller faster now, and I don’t crave food as much. I used to snack all the time between breakfast and lunch and dinner, but now i can easily wait till the next meal. I know you are kinda supposed to snack, though!

anyway, i’ve kinda figured out from weightwatchers what is healthier for me and what is not.

also, i want to ask you, I heard you are going back to Japan this year. How much were your tickets? I have a friend who lives in Japan and I”ve been trying to find tickets, but they are all like $1200!!

$1200 sounds pretty typical~ Sometimes you can find them for $800 during off season.

I’ve always wanted to take a bath but I don’t because I share my bathroom lol. I would have to scrub the tub everytime I want to take a bath. I will try it when I move out. It just seems like such a relaxing and fun thing to do.I would totally exercise during my bathing time. That’s a really good idea. I wonder how people bathe for over an hour! 3 hours!! REALLY?
and LOL at the blue theory! I’m sure it works because I wouldn’t want to eat blue rice.

Hahahahahhh, I loove coloring rice blue to loose appetite xDDDD Hilarious!
It is easier to keep baths hot in Japan though, they are smaller and they also say in the magazine, they cover the bath with the plastic roll cover, so the steam and hot water stay inside ^^ Western baths are too wide and big and have no covers too

Congrats on keeping off the weight you’ve lost! I, too am always worried I’ll gain my weight back. But, it’s only been off for a few months so maybe in a year I’ll be more confident too!

I’m so jealous of your bath! My grandma had the bathroom I use remodeled about 2 years ago & took out the bathtub :( I miss taking baths! D:

I’ll have to try those leg massages- especially after a long day at my 2nd (retail) job! x_x

I use livestrong too! I actually got the idea from you~~
You posted about using it a few yrs ago in a older post I think…
(Yes, I was one of those lurkers… =O )
Before livestrong, I wrote all my food and calories BY HAND…!
So I’m soooo glad I found your blog, and read that entry, it’s such a useful site~~

And the longest I’ve ever taken a bath was 40 min…
And only because I fell asleep…! haha~
I usually read magazines, drink green tea, and snack on some fruit…
But all that gets boring for me quickly, so my average is only 20-30 min in the tub..! lol

The Bihada Ichizoku are still my favorites. I’ve tried a few new ones lately, Japanese & Chinese brands and they don’t measure up

hi ^3^,
i just wanted to ask, does taking a long, hot bath really truly help with losing weight?

and the blue plate thing, works for me

jenny said

It helps more than, let’s say, sitting on the couch watching an hour of of TV would

Is having a hot bath meant to be good for you then? I didn’t know that! I’ve always had long steaming hot baths, I just love sitting in the boiling hot water. My husband always tells me the water’s too hot . I leave the bathroom door open so there’s always cool air in the room, and I read LOADS of books

Hello! I LOOOOVE your blog and I’m on my way clicking through it

Your bath-salt reviews are soooo tempting haha, I ordered some bison bath salts at sasa.com yesterday.

You wrote about using your blackberry while taking a bath.
Well I do the same, always grabbing to my phone like mad so it won’t fall down.

I’ll go visit Japan this fall and I was wondering if you could tell me if there are some cute covers for blackberry-phones in Japan?

All I ever find in Switzerland or onlinestores are covers for iPhones ó__ò;;
