Clarisonic Final Thoughts

Monday January 30, 2012

It’s about time I wrapped up some final thoughts on my
Clarisonic Mia 2!

I got mine back in December. I’ve been using it for 2 months now. Let me get to the point and say I love it! I’m happy with the results and plan on using it as part of my daily routine, twice a day, from here on out.

Can I live without it? Yes. Do I want to? No.

I was using the Sensitive Brush head at first but replaced it with the Deep Pore Cleansing one last week. I think I might like the deep-pore head better since my skin has oily zones and my pores are rather large. Since using it I’ve seen my already shrunken pores get even smaller so I’m happy my kit included both heads!

When I first got it I was actually having the usual Thanksgiving holiday break-out. I’m very acne prone but you can read about my skin type here instead.

After I started using the Mia 2 it began to clear right away! I didn’t experience much “purging.” Had a few deep clogged pores finally come to surface and heal quickly. During the first month the most common occurrence was blackheads would turning into slight but small red bumps. I’d treat them with acne cream and the next day they’d be clear and the pores would be smaller! After the first month I stopped getting zits altogether.

My regular routine changed a bit too. Where I used to have to wash my face after work due to excessive oily skin, now my makeup is still fresh at 5pm! Actually now I rarely wash my face after work because it isn’t as oily as it used to be and skipping doesn’t cause me zits like it used to either! My pores on my forehead and nose have decreased dramatically. So much so that I no longer see a use for buying Benefit’s Pore Professional! This is really what I was hoping to achieve! The few fine lines I was developing have now softened as well. My makeup goes on smoother. Oh and I’ve been asked if I’m wearing makeup (when I wasn’t) because my skin was looking “so fresh!” I don’t have as many “blotchy days” and I skip wearing BB Cream some days and just wear Benefit Get Even powder. I’m having to apply less concealer these days and, yes, I’ve gone without wearing any makeup on a few days again too without feeling like an ugly hag.

So, I love my Clarisonic. Yes, they have cheaper non-sonic facial brushes out there. Yes, those would probably do you better than not using one at all. But no, I haven’t tried them personally. But there are articles out there comparing the Clarisonic to the drugstore equivalents if you’re interested! In the end it seems anything beyond just using your fingers is good. It depends on just how good you want it and what investment you’re willing to make. I don’t think at age 20 I could -

1: afford a Clarisonic,
2: needed it as much as I do now. My skin was just different at that age. Who knew a few years later it would betray me completely.

But as I got older I started taking skin care more seriously.
(I used to sleep in my makeup while in college ok, something I would NEVER. DO. TODAY!)

So I’m not saying run out and buy one or that you shouldn’t try a cheaper version like the OLAY one. For me Clarisonic was a great investment, and if you’re on the fence about trying one maybe look into taking the plunge preferably from a place that allows you returns, no questions asked. (For instance QVC where I bought mine.)

I should note I haven’t switched my daily cleansers at all. I’m using everything I did before and instead of using my hands to wash my face I use my Clarisonic. Simple change. Only complaint is how long it takes to charge. I’m forced to skip 1 of 2 uses about once every 3 weeks when I charge it but it’s not so bad.

Gah. Which reminds me…I need to go back to my skin care routine. It’s really hard getting used to. Turning 21 and I haven’t really done much to my face. I know it’s really bad considering that my face needs just as much pampering as the rest of my body does. It’s hard to find the perfect skin care regiment for me with such dry and sensitive skin. T_T

I shall try this Carisonic out! Thanks for the amazing review! ^_^

If you do end up trying it I hope you like it! Your skin doesn’t sound too bad though right now? Mine is so high maintenance or it easily looks like my 15-yr-old-pimple-self.

  2. Sarah B. says:

Do you use it everyday or only a couple of times a week? I’ve been on the fence about this because I have super sensitive skin but it also is flaky and needs exfoliation so that’s why I’m interested.

    • jenny says:

Every day twice a day. It’s what’s recommended. Some people use it only once a day if they find it’s too drying etc. I used to hand wash my face 3 times a day. Now I wash my face w/clarisonic in the morning then again at night.

  3. Sidney says:

Did you ever get bad blackheads on your nose/did this make them go away?? I always have them and HATE it. Obviously I have bad patches everywhere, and from far away you can’t see them. But without my powder, I feel like they’re super noticeable.

And I just found out I’m getting a decent amount back for my tax returns, so I am thinking about splurging on this or something else for skin care blurrrrg

    • jenny says:

I had HORRIBLE nose black heads. I still have them but 50% less! :D Especially on the sides of my nose, those are sometimes clear now thankfully. And the blackheads along my upper inner cheek are disappearing. I’m still seeing results especially now that I’m using the deep-pore brush.

      • Sidney says:

YES! on the side of my nose I’m like “WHY are you still there even though the rest of my face is okish…??” I think I’m going to get this. Or some scrubber like it. NOM NOM clear skin I WANT CHUU

(also, ty so much for always answering my somewhat absurd and usually long questions, Jenny….I appreciate it SO much because I feel like your problems/skin type/whatever is similar to mine and I know you’re being honest about the review)

        • jenny says:

It’s OK Sid, thanks for not hating my too often enormously long replies :D

Yeah I kept thinking “I’m not gonna see results, I’m gonna return this.” But after the first month it was more & more along the lines of “… why would I return this!?”

  4. Elisa says:

i always wanted to try this out since a lot of youtubers raved about it .. i’m sure that it’s better than just washing your face with fingers… but i’m still hesitating to buy it because of the price… The sigma version, looks similar to this but haven’t tried it though.. am curious about that one as well..

ps. how old are you actually o__O” i actually thought that you were 19 or something lol..

  5. Jenii says:

Ahhhhhhhhh I want to try….I have such PORES that need to go. Thanks for such an in-depth review!!

    • jenny says:

The pores…. the pores are what made me give in and buy this!!

      • Jenii says:

Have you used it with scrubs? Or do you stick with washes for this?

AHHHH DO WANNNNNNNT (pores to be goneee)!

        • jenny says:

I think using a scrub with it would be much too abbrasive. Just a wash is good. I used to use a light scrub every other day but the Clarisonic does such a good job at getting the dead skin that I’ve only used my scrub (with my fingers) about once every 3~4 weeks now (winter harsh winds!)

  6. Lisa says:

I just got a Clairsonic Mia last week and have been using it for about 4 days. It was expensive but this winter has been so harsh on my skin I couldn’t stand it anymore! :P I had oily spots and this rough dry skin on my cheeks that kept breaking out . I can already tell that my skin is getting much smoother and soft. Mine just came with one brush head – I should check which one because the deep cleaning one sounds like it could help me out too.

I like the sample face cleanser that came with it, but I’ll probably switch back to my normal stuff once it runs out.

    • jenny says:

This sounds like my skin too! Actually I used to use a face scrub weekly in the winter! Now I don’t need it any more since the Clarisonic exfoliates it well :D

      • Lisa says:

Ooo, I should totally get that deep cleaning brush then. I would use a face scrub every day (just on the dry spots) to try and get rid of that rough skin!

I wonder if we have sensitive southern skin. :P All that humidity is good for your skin right? My skin just dries out up here (from LA).

        • jenny says:

Oh no, actually the “Sensitive” brush I was using before was doing the trick just fine too! It takes a little more time to see effects. Really I noticed a bigger change after the first month. :D I think any brush head will be enough to scrub away your winter skin after a week or 2. I’ve only been using the deep-pore brush for about a week :)

Here’s hoping you’ll notice some bigger changes soon!

Yeah I have to actually MOISTURIZE my entire skin during winter now not living in the south! It’s straaaange, hahahah ;P

  7. Denny says:

Now I’m pumped up on getting it! This review totally hooked me! If you’re saying it helped you with the pores I have to get my hands on it ASAP! I will try saving money on getting it

    • jenny says:

I know it did bc it’s the whole reason I bought it. I was LOOKING for pore minimizing! I have acne prone skin but I can manage that on my own but my pores!!!! I was trying all types of creams and makeup to hide them, ever-growing! Definitely reduced them to looking as if I was using Pore Professional. Don’t know if you’ve used that by Benefit but it’s pretty good since it’s like filling in your pores making it look smooth. Only now I have the look sans makeup.

  8. Jade Love says:

Thanks for clarify me about these sonic brushes. I always wanted to try them, I suffer a lot with blackheads and i do break out a lot.

  9. Aurora says:

I started using the Mia a few days ago and my face feels so much softer, serum just sinks in, and someone said my skin was glowing! It’s actually scary how satisfying it is to see blackheads disappear! I tried out a Neutrogena cleanser first to see if I liked the concept but the Clarisonic feels crazily effective. It was great reading about how well it’s working for you long-term and exciting to hear that it can soften fine lines :) I think you can really make a difference by investing some time and money into skincare.

  10. jiaying says:

Wow! i’m so glad for you! :-)
That marks a great start to the year – good skin!

I’m aiming for that too.. Tt’s a dream for me to head out without makeup on my face- I just can’t.. all the blemishes, uneven skin, ance scars and blackheads. :-( My skin is just really sensitive and it doesn’t help that my mum keeps reminding me about it(how good my skin is in the past, how bad I look compared to my relatives and peers blah blah blah). It just drives me insane…

I’m thinking of saving up for one!

    • jenny says:

I feel your pain. A few years ago, I hit a brick wall with my awful skin. It had looked great then suddenly it hated EVERYTHING. I know it’s a long journey back to clear skin but you’ll find your way eventually. So much trial & error. It’s disheartening. I finally found a routine that worked for me maybe 2~ years ago. Now adding this into the mix feels even better!

  11. Jenna says:

Like you just mentioned in this post, I actually went out and bought the Olay version a month ago after reading about how well Clarisonic worked for you! ^o^ Using an electronic brush really does help clean your face better than just using hands. I don’t know if the one I bought can help me shrink my pores, but I love how soft it makes my skin feel afterward. Thank you so much Jenny! ^^

  12. Heather says:

    Thanks for the review!
When I was in High School I had perfect skin and barely ever even washed it. (lucky)
Once I graduated it quickly became a huge problem and an uphill battle. I’ve tried everything aside from pills.

I’ve been on the fence about buying the Mia but I always trust your judgment and I’m really excited to buy it now! Next pay check for sure.

    Thanks again! \ (n_n) /

    • jenny says:

Ugh I got on prescriptions back in High School for acne. Then went clear for years then got so bad again I had to get back on prescriptions but none of that worked the second time around. Took me a few years to find the right products & routine to keep clear. *feels your pain

  13. Mary says:

I saw this one day and thought I should try. I was skeptical about it. I do have this scrubby pad thing, but I find my pores are still so clogged >

  14. cin says:

Soooo tempted to buy one but it’s expensive t_t

  15. Samantha says:

I’ve been expecting this post! I trust your reviews of things, and from the looks/sound of it we have similar skin. I have really humongous pores (that tend to be clogged -__-;;) on my nose so I’m always looking for ways to get rid of them. Hopefully when I get this Clarisonic I will see results!

    • jenny says:

I hope so too, my pores were the real reason I finally seriously looked into this. I had been unhappy with them for nearly a year trying to “correct” them.

  16. alice says:

Thank you for making this post. Now I’m seriously thinking of buying one!

  17. Cupcake says:

Your skin sounds very similar to mine. I may need to invest in this!!

  18. _lyne says:

wow you make it sound so good! i’m tempted to get one, but maybe not so soon…gotta save up first! it’s really sad how my skin is no longer as smooth as it used to be a few years back so i’m slowly trying to improve my routine for eg eating supplements to help. it is never too late (or early) to start on an anti-aging regime! :p

  19. Veronica says:

I have the Olay Pro X spin brush – it’s pretty good, I’d say I’m happy with it, glad your Clarisonic is working out, that would be awful to spend the $ and it’s not as great as the reviews.

  20. Tori says:

I actually use the Olay one & have noticed similar beneficial results too, so I definitely wouldn’t discount going for the cheaper version if you can’t afford a Clairsonic like you said ;) However, you have sold me on this one… I think I’d be willing to ‘upgrade’ at some point!

  21. Courtney says:

:O I’m glad that worked so well for you! I’m impressed…I didn’t think anything could clean your skin so thoroughly…or improve pore size. :) I had a knock off small one of these…maybe I gave up on it too quickly… Anyway, I would definitely consider getting one of these when I’m in a position to afford it if it could work like that for me!

  22. ニッキー says:

Everyone’s skin is different, but I too LOVE the Mia! Certainly a good investment.

I was tempted to try deep pore brush, but I think it will be too harsh for my skin. Mine is fairly sensitive and the sensitive brush already feels a bit strong. How does the deep pore brush feel to you Jenny?

  23. Ana says:

I have a Clarisonic, I was AMAZED when I actually got one for Christmas *lucky*, and I love mine. I mean yes, I could live without it, but I really love it so much, I use it every night! I use it on my body, too (with the body brush) and my skins feels really smooth. I think it does dry out the skin on my face sometimes though. So I don’t use it for a day or two… rambling… I’m glad you like it, too! :)

  24. MissFeelo says:

Ah I really want one, but, just can’t afford it right now! I have a “drugstore” version, the Pretika, which has nice reviews online but I’m quite lazy and don’t use it too often.

  25. Jesslyn says:

    Hi Jenny,
Just curious, you mentioned that you are still using your same cleanser (not the Clarisonic brand) right? I am currently using natural soap for my facial cleansing routine, that’s why I am wondering how am I able to use Clarisonic then? I am HUGELY interested in purchasing this Clarisonic Mia2, after reading so many positive reviews everywhere..I know this might be a stupid question…Can I just wash my face with soap and then use Clarisonic? What do you think then? :)

    • jenny says:

It comes with instructions on how to do your routine like this. Just wet your face with warm water, lather it up with the soap. Wet the clarisonic a bit with warm water as well, then use the clarisonic on your lathered face. Then rinse :)

  26. cheryl says:

Hi Jenny, do you use the deep pore brush twice a day as well? I’m currently on the sensitive(only two weeks into it but im happy with it! :3) and I was thinking of investing in the deep pore brush. Is it too harsh to use it with that brush twice a day? :P

    • jenny says:

Yes. I use it twice a day still no matter the brush head type. Though I read some ppl prefer only once a day. I feel twice give me clearer skin still.
