Various Eyeliners

Monday, October 26th, 2009 | 40 Comments

I was going through my makeup this weekend and thought it would be fun to share some quick comments on the different liners I currently have. I’m in no way some sort of expert, but I do have liners ranging from black pencil to liquid glitter! Typically I use black or dark shadows and an eyeliner brush for the eyeliner effect. It’s much easier than liners, BUT I prefer the staying power and dramatic look of liners too. Especially lately. I should also add that I use Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow primer every time when wearing eye make including with all these liners.

Anna Sui

Anna Sui Black Pencil Liner
Purchased on Yesstyle.com

Anna Sui Black pencil liner. By far my favorite pencil liner I’ve used, ever. Goes on fairly easy using the dash method and stays put. Very low on the smudging too, going a full work day (8 hours) before noticing some, if any, smudging or transferring.

Makemania

Makemania
(site) Purchased at local Japanese market

Japanese brand Makemania in dense black. Glides on easily and evenly so saves on time. Very dense black color (as stated on the box!) However it smudges easily. In no way waterproof or smudge proof. I tend to use this one when going out after work because I can add it quickly to my already done day-make and only need it to look good for a few hours.

NYX

NYX Purple pencil liner
Purchased at Amuse accessory store

NYX Purple colored pencil liner. Good for a bargain purchase! Goes on a little harsh, it’s definitely not a gliding pencil but the color really pops. I’ve only ever purchased colored liners in this brand since with color you don’t have to be so precised like black. No smudging either. However you’ll definitely need eye make remover to get this off.

Sephora

Sephora flashy pink liner
Purchased at Sephora

Sephora’s flashy waterproof liner in Flashy Pink. This is one of those things I keep meaning to buy more of. Glides on easily in 1 line. Color is soft and subtle but still noticeably metallic. Nice combination for wearing to the office without looking like a street punk. Only complaint is that there is some smudging/transferring if used as a bottom liner. But very affordable. I think a good liner for beginners.

LA Splash

LA Splash liquid liner
purchased on Yesstyle.com

LA Splash liquid liner in black. At $10 let me say I didn’t have high expectations for this liner. Very messy liquid liner. I’m fairly skilled at liquid but even I couldn’t get this brush under control. Also takes much too long to dry. I wouldn’t recommend this brand, cheap is good but sometimes it’s worth spending a little more.

Blinc

Blinc liquid liner
Purchased on Yesstyle.com

Blinc liquid eyeliner in black. What can I say, this stuff is crazy! IN A GOOD WAY! It does everything it says. It goes on pretty easily. Though you’ll need at least 2 coats. Then it stays on. No smudging, no nothing, until you gently wash (or peel) it away with warm water. I’ve literally worn this stuff for 2 days due to passing out and it still looked freshly applied. If you’re a late night party girl I recommend this stuff. You can even rub your eyes again and again and it doesn’t budge. Only drawback is that due to needing multiple coats it’s not the best liquid if you want subtle, thin lines of black liner. This one is definitely for dramatic liner looks. Love it~

Victoria’s Secret

Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Holiday Glitter Liner
Purchased last holiday season at Victoria’s Secret

Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Holiday glitter liquid liner. This liquid liner was a surprise because, not only was it a glitter liner, but also a black liquid liner! I fell in love with it. Definitely great for the holiday season but I’ve conserved it. Though it’s nearly out. Goes on smooth, and because of the black liner the glitter is subtle, so work appropriate. Glitter and liner stay put, no smudging or glitter-fall.

Urban Decay

Urban Decay glitter liner
Purchased at Sephora

Urban Decay glitter liquid liner in Metalhead (dark purple.) This was one of the original colors, they have pretty pink and sky blue ones out now too. A good liquid glitter liner. Can be used as liner or rub all over lid. It’s in a clear liquid, so only the glitter shows. Glitter stays put! Only downside is the drying time feels a little long. A few years ago this was the choice glitter liner of Ageha. The glitter is quite sparkly

Sephora

Sephora Glitter liner

Sephoa glitter liner in Opal. Really pretty iridescent liquid glitter liner. A good, cheaper alternative to Urban Decay’s (and others.) Goes on easily and dries a bit faster than Urban Decay’s. Glitter does a decent job at staying put. Goes on thicker than other glitter liners which can be good or bad depending on the look you want. Though not great for all over lid glitter because it feels a bit tacky when used that way.

ah I ment “Fiberwig” and that obviously doesn’t start with an M and they don’t make eye liners do they?

I’ve only tried Kanebo’s Kate eyeshadows. Haven’t tried the felt gel ones either yet. These ones I listed are really the majority of the ones I’ve tried Maybe you were thinking of the majolica majorca brand by Shiseido?

Bianca said
October 28, 2009 @ 8:51 pm

Yes, Majolica Majorca was probably what I was thinking of!

But thanks, I am excited to spend a day at sephora and try out these liners you enjoy, especially because I never really gave pencil liners a chance. Maybe one of them will work for me, or maybe I’ll find something else…who knows

btw LOVE THE LAYOUT, I don’t know why but I am super excited for halloween this year, i guess since the whole recession thing, it finally gives us something to just celebrate and enjoy with loved one

happy halloween jenny!

Woo eyeliner reviews!

That pink one looks bright~ I really like it! I always wanted to try wearing just a bright eyeliner instead of my eyeshadow or doing just the bottom liner.

I kinda got scared off with my VS glitter eyeliner in purple cause when I took it off, my face was covered in glitter. D:

But I wish I loved the Holiday VS liner like you do! I like it but not enough to use it all the time! Sigh, maybe its cause I’m not used to it yet..

Jenny ~ you should make a video or photo tutorial **make-up!!
my skin is not that great - i mean is really sensitive so is really
difficult to use make up without my skin looking weird after T_+ what should i DoOo??
+ Thank you for the different liners , im going to go buy ^^v

Awe thank you. I would do all that if I had more time maybe? Though my eyes are all ew ew ew up close, hahahahaaaa!

If you’re skin is sensitive I’d stick to make up for sensitive skin types only. The Bare Mineral kind or organic ones. Physician’s Formula is a relatively affordable brand found in US drugstores with a Mineral (talc-free) line. http://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/staticpage/mineralwear.html

I don’t know some of these brands, but I reeeeeeaally want a NYX eyeliner!
Here in my country doesn’t have good brands, so the NYX is, now for me, the best option, because the low price and the quality!

So nice of you showing your possessions, thanks very much! ^^

Wow you have a lot of liners! Great write-ups! I’m always jealous of girls who can wear and apply liner perfectly. I do it so infrequently that whenever I *do* put on liner, it takes a long time to draw the perfect line.

I tend to stay away from liquid liners because they’re sooo time consuming! But I do like your selection of liners!

I use NYC a lot, I have eyeliner in the pencil and liquid form, and mascara. It is a very good cheap brand, but I actually have a lot of problems with it smudging on me :(

Really? Do you use an eyeshadow primer with it? I’ve only ever had this purple one and I feel it’s impossible for me to even get off!

Thanks so much for this post, bby!! I am always looking for good eyeliners & this really helped!
I have a VS glitter eyeliner that I bought last holiday season too, & I was pleasantly surprised that it actually works & stays put!
I’m currently looking for a good ‘regular’ eyeliner to wear for work/everyday though, so I think I’ll check out the Blinc one, just because I hate leaving work & looking in a mirror to see my eye makeup literally melting off my face, haha!

I envy people who are able to use proper eyeliner, especially in glitter form. I have tilted smallish eyes so if I wear eyeliner on my actual eyelid, my eyes look really squinty and too heavily made-up.

I didn’t know Victoria’s Secret sold make-up. o_O’ Then again, we don’t have VS here in Finland. I stole a glance at the selection and they seem to carry lovely lip glosses and eyeshadows, so thanks for the tip!

Oh, and MUCH LOVE at your layout. I’ve been stalking your blog for a bit now, lurking in the corner, and it’s lovely to see that all people aren’t afraid to use personality & colors on their blogs. (I’m very tired of “classy” gray-black-and-white layouts…

Oh, I’m curious to try the Victoria Secret one but I hardly ever use eyeliner anyway, I have very large eyes so I don’t really need extra attention to them haha. But I do use mascara often!

I did a mascara one too a while ago! http://sushi-cat.net/2009/01/11/mascara/
Just FYI in case you’ve ever wondered about any of these brands~

I’m all about the MAC liners! I’ve been using them forever because I love the colors. I just bought my first black pencil last week (and this was only because it was sparkly, limited edition and not so dark, it’s MAC Softsparkle Eye Pencil in Nightsky) otherwise I always use dark blues, greens purples and browns for lining. Everyone at the MAC counter had a simultaneous heart attack after I told them this.

I recommend their Fluidline. Not the convenience of a pencil and you need to use a separate brush, but it works SO well, there is so much you can do with it.

P.S. LOVE the colors of your Halloween layout (and overall)!

I think I’m going to try the Anna Sui liner! I haven’t found a pencil liner that doesn’t smudge yet. I love using Urban Decay’s glitter liners too!

I’ve been using Revlon’s Colorstay Liquid Liner and I’ve gotta say that it doesn’t smudge and you can control how thin or thick the line is. It’s cheap too! Thanks for all those reviews. I haven’t tried most of these brands you mentioned.

I just recently barely learned how to apply eyeliner. I use one of the brushes as well (I could never get the pencils to work smoothly or sharpen properly…probably because I was using cheap stuff). And I use this brown eyeshadow sort of stuff (can you tell I know nothing about makeup?) for the color. Overall it’s a nice subtle effect, but I’ll come back here if I find I’m ready to experiment. Oh, also, your mascara review was very helpful as well. :3

That sounds really classic! I think starting out using eyeshadow first is an extreme MUST. I started out with this stuff because it can go on wet giving a less subtle look…

You’re a lifesaver, Jen!!! I’m such a noob to eyemake :( I never really wear it during the week, and only simple stuff during the weekend. Whenever I need it for a costume I make my best friend apply it, lol.

So this really helps!!! Some eyeliners I’ve tried have been hit or miss, so it’s nice to know what to look for.
