D is for Downy

Downy. A fabric softener.
I use this stuff with every load plus their scented dryer sheets. They now have these “unstoppable” pellets (on the left) you put in the washing machine with the laundry to add extra fragrance. I mostly use them with towels and sheets. They’re a bit overpowering for clothing so I use regular liquid Downy for that. Purex actually came out with this idea first with their “crystals” before Downy had these. I actually like both brands and buy both still.
I’m a clean smelling laundry nut. Just being a good housewife I guess…
I always love new household items. I find household goods from other countries especially fascinating. One of the reasons I used to love getting Ageha a few years ago was the January issue where they’d do a yearly rank of EVERYTHING. From laundry detergent to toothpaste.
These goods reflect the daily life of not only a culture but an individual as well. The brands that tend to be #1 in a country have been established for generations and are familiar to everyone instantly! That’s amazing to me!
Plus the variations in fragrance. American scents are so confusing to explain sometimes. “Clean Breeze.”
And recently, as I showed Winn, there’s even a “New Zealand Springs” scent from Frebreze! How does it smell??? You really have to sniff for yourself to know
As for the above scents. The Unstoppable has the scent called “lush” and the liquid fabric softener is a dual-scented version called “Sage Jasmine Thrill.”
My friend loves Downy. When Purex came out with the crystals I was SO HAPPY because I could actually ship it to her. (You can’t ship liquids.)
And just last week I shipped her a small packet of the Downy Unstoppables to use.

Interesting choice for D.
I agree, asking what brands someone likes & why is kinda interesting. As a kid I remember growing up and being surprised that not everyone buys the same brands for milk, butter, mayo, detergent, etc…
I love soapy smells (even select them for candles, so I can appreciate fresh smelling laundry
Yeah, it’s sorta a random topic, that’s what I loved about the A-Z challenge!
It’s actually interesting to see what people use just in different parts of the country. Though major brands are available all over, regional brands are SO interesting! From detergent to soft drinks~
I am a laundry nerd! I love detergents and fabric softener! Tbh, I care more about the fabric softener than the actual detergent. I ignore the instructions on the washing machine and always add extra. So sometimes I walk in and the washing machine is having a seizure trying to wash it all out, haha. I don’t care, I want my stuff CLEEEAAAAN and smell-purty-y. u__u;;
Ain’t nobody gonna tell me I smell D:
SAME. I have a limited choice with detergent anyway having an HE washer plus some scents from detergents bother my skin, but I’ve never had an issue with softeners thankfully!
Holy moley. I need to try that out. One guy friend of mine was hanging out with me and I thought that he put on some really feminine cologne…turns out it was his laundry detergent. OF ALL THINGS. It smelled awesome. I need to try this.
Yeah detergent & softeners are really potent these days so it’s kinda crazy anyone would find a way to smell bad you know!!
Awe, that’s so sweet that you sent her some Downy crystals! ♥
I am actually a huge Downy freak too, haha~ I loveee that fresh clean laundry scent when I wash my clothes, I can’t imagine NOT using fabric softener!
Yeah, 1: it’s new so they wouldn’t have it there for a while & 2: they charge such craaaaaaaaazy prices for Downy there! Save her some money LOL
When (rarely) I forget to add in softener I’ve actually redone my laundry … :X I hate itchy fabrics!
You should send her those laundry balls, for softener! my cousin’s kids always play with them when the balls aren’t rolling about in the machine ;3
Ah yeah~! I wonder if her machine can use them? My HE machine can’t because it has a softener dispenser already, so I never thought about it.
I love the smell of laundry detergent. My boyfriend doesn’t wear cologne, so he just smells of laundry detergent and it upstages cologne almost all the time.
I’m going to have to try the Unstoppables, I didn’t even know Downy had anything like that.
Yea they’re REALLY new. Came out this summer~~
Looks nice, I can only use Free & Clear laundry detergent. My skin is too sensitive for all the fragrances and dyes in normal detergent. Makes it break out and/or get itchy and red.
I did use the Downy Creme dryer sheets before they canceled them. They made my clothes so smell soo good! Not too milky and sweet, just a a vanilla and creme. Mixed well with my Stella perfume.
Ah that sucks. I’ve only ever had issues with certain detergents and not softeners… well except the Tide with Febreze line, can’t use that without itching :(
I don’t know if I recall the Downy Creme dryer sheets!! I only started using Downy when Simple Pleasures came out. Before then I used Bounce
i like that ypu can smell these before you buy them
VERY helpful.
We don’t have downy here in Germany, but I often saw it in Tokyo and always wondered how it would be to use it, hahaha!
Btw, I plan to make a Jack O’ Lantern, hope it will turn out well. But first I have to go through the mess of getting the content out of the pumpkin, lol
Yeah it seems huge in Japan as an import item. My friend always pays so much for it and I’m just like “nuuuu let me send you some!”
I really love how strange detergent names are sometimes.
AHAHAHAHAHA I know, they’re never actual nouns or anything. Well except Tide I guess. But it’s always weird names, like Borax, Bounce, Purex, Cheer, Extra, Surf, etc.
haha funny ^.^’ I’m glad I’m not the only crazy woman with a flair for household items from other countries
Unfortunately I don’t know the ones on your picture =(
You’re glad??! I’m glad! I figured I’d get 0 comments on this entry hahaha!
Downy!! I love fabric softener too! In Singapore, we love Softlan. Well… at least my mum brought me up using it. She also shared with me that too much of softener in the wash might ‘aged’ the clothes, like make them lose their colors.
I’ve noticed a few issues of Vivi, when they do a ‘Hawaii’ special, models like Chikako love to get Downy. Haha!
“New Zealand Springs” I kinda want to smell that to see if they got it spot on … haha, actually first time I’ve seen such a product!
