I Scribble Notes Like a Crazed Person

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011 | 40 Comments

I was thinking today, with November less than a week away and “wintry mix” in the forecast for this coming Saturday, I need to transition my closet from fall to winter

I want to drill down to the best pieces I WANT to wear all the time, right now. Lately I have a lot of “guilt items” again. Change of season usually to blame. I see them there hanging and feel bad for hardly ever wearing them so I stare at them thinking “I should try to work this in today…” but then I don’t. It’s a waste of time to even see them! So I’m going to weed them out. It’s hard when you still “like” the item. I won’t be donating or selling them though. I might grow tired of my current favs and they’ll be there ready to take over. Plus ready for warmer weather too.  Well, in theory. Ok ok ok rambling.

I made a list to help me reorg for winter! I’m a list-a-phile. If I can break it down into a list then a list it will be! They help me think things through.

While away (key!) from my closet, I did a category of things I’m dying to wear and another of things I feel guilty for never wearing but still live with the delusion I will. The guilt clothes get moved out into the storage closet. Sometimes though, I feel SO guilty and rethink it, I force myself to try on at least 3 outfits using the item should be tossing. If I don’t love the looks it goes! It’s so silly but clothes are MONEY in my head and not wearing them feels like wasting money. So much guilt. But out of sight out of mind.

Next I took the favorites and broke them down into item types. The tops and bottoms all match beautifully. Etc. How it should be! Then I started breaking them into two categories of casual and non-casual (I wrote elegant ). It’s vague and only means anything to me really but it’s helpful for my goal.

I always feel so energized when I do this with my clothes. I’ll definitely be pulling many items back out come spring. If I still feel not so great about any of them I’ll be making my way to the donation bin

I’m the same way! Especially about my upcoming move. I am obsessed with decorating and appliances.

A move, it’s a must for moving!!! I still have my entire notebook of decorating ideas for when I last moved!

It’s good to do this a couple of times a year~ It puts things into perspective…Sometimes we get lost in all of our stuff! So it’s good to get organized~!!

My closet needs MAJOR reorganizing… Next time I get the courage to do so, I’ll remember your tips!

Courage. Definitely takes this! You have to really look at yourself and in a way let parts go! It’s so difficult emotionally sometimes.

Lol, I’m never this careful about my wardrobe. I’m starting to think that perhaps “less is more”. When I had less clothes (as in literally 11 tops), I got creative and mixed and matched to create different outfits with the same pieces, and I always felt like I had something to pretty to wear. Then after getting more clothes, it seemed like I never had anything, and I tend to not layer anymore.

Less is more. Agreed. Easier to get dressed when everything’s narrowed down.

VERY JEALOUS! Yeah I have some new buys I haven’t really gotten to enjoy b/c my closet is so overflowing. Definitely time to reorganize it.

I know exactly what you mean. I need to really narrow down my closet space. It’s gotten to the point where I literally have more outerwear than I do anything else and I live in Southern California! We don’t even need trench coats!

Ahahahaga yes yes I understand!!!!!!!! Right now I have more cardigans than blouses to wear them with. It’s so overwhelming. I need my choices limited to serious key outfits.

I’m the same way, it’s so hard letting go “loved but falling apart” pieces! sometimes I organize everything by color too.. If you’re interested, I did a little research on “capsule” wardrobes and essential shoes/pieces for every women ;3 let me know!’

OH and before-after photos of closet organizing pls???!

Absolutely!!! I took a before last night and started reorganizing and putting away late summer early fall items already Hope I can finish tonight or tomorrow at least. Already went through my tights (I have SOOOOO many) and separated them into MUST wear and might wear

I’m the same way - I make so many list and re-lists, even after only scratching off like 3 things - so they never are fully crossed off! That’s prob a bad habit DX

Same. I’m getting a bit out of hand. If I can, I try to do it on my phone but for a lot of things I really need that pen to paper feeling!

oh my gosh you are too cute! DD;; I really should do this though, I have so many semi-winter clothes that won’t keep me warm this season. I need to do this!

jenny said
Yesterday @ 7:11 am

Yeah, with the cold weather I really can’t imagine wearing some of the things I still have hanging up in my closet x(

I’m a huge list-a-phile too! This is a super good idea to make lists of for those of us who love things we own, but never wear them.

jenny said
Yesterday @ 7:13 am

Yes!!! I’m really bad at buying smtg then waiting for some “perfect” time to wear it!! So I have to sorta push myself to wear it as much as I’d like even if that means risking its condition

I don’t make lists often, but writing things down always helps me out! A leather “diary” goes everywhere with me. If it’s not in my bag I feel lost! That said, your handwriting is GORGEOUS~ I wish mine was that neat!

That’s a super good idea though. I’m so bad about getting rid of clothes. I always feel guilty because I “didn’t wear them enough”.

jenny said
Yesterday @ 10:27 pm

You keep a written diary still?! That’s so admirable. I’d be too afraid to drop it somewhere like at the office or something. And you like my handwriting!? I think it’s so baaaaaaaad! Like a boy’s or something!

Mmm that’s exactly how I feel with the guilt. I’m not wearing them enough!! But with work it’s hard you know but I still feel guilty.

Very nice idea to makes an order in your closet. I hope it will help u a lot. This post is really inspiring. Winter is coming and my wardrobe still has a lot of summer clothes :O It’s so hard to get rid of these clothes or just throw away unnecessary things

jenny said

It never fails thankfully. I’ve done it similar to this for over a year now and I can’t imagine how I ever did it before… oh wait, that’s right, I was drowning in never worn clothes!!

The list thing is a really good idea! I have been needing to change over my closets & drawers from s/s to a/w too but I’ve just been so lazy about it ;x
I can’t believe there is a ‘chance of snow showers’ for tomorrow night… I have a feeling this winter will be brutal.

Yesterday @ 11:01 pm

It really takes a push. Lately I’ve been doing it when I find myself unable to really get dressed easily. I should be able to pull something together easily so when I no longer can I realize it’s time for hard work.

STAY WARM!!
