Already in my closet

Thursday, October 15th, 2009 | 51 Comments

It’s so cold! and rainy :F
Sometimes it really seems autumn only last 2 weeks in this stinkin’ city
Because of that I went through all my winter clothes the other day. Had to see what fit, what was hopeless, and what I could successfully shrink. Looks like I’ve got a bunch of basics to re-buy Which means less to spend on trendy winter items.

So I started to photoshop together a sort of lookbook that I’m gonna print out! I noticed that I already have certain key items found in some magazine coordinates! So I can recreate some of these outfits already without feeling the need to buy something new.
Very helpful!

I’m hoping it’ll curb my desire to spend, spend, spend on new, trendy winter clothes. Instead I can just flip through and and feel satisfied with all the outfits I can already piece together. I do know I could just CUT OUT the outfits from magazines…. but in my eyes, cutting one of my mags up is like blasphemy!

I actually did this a few years ago but with hair styles & how to’s. I found that really helpful too.

Top: H&M
Overalls: Yesstyle
Boots: Randa

Top: Yesstyle
Jacket: 5*7*9
Overalls: Yesstyle
Shoes: DSW

T-Shirt: Junk Food (Bloomingdale’s)
Long Tee: Old Navy
Shorts: A&F
Tights: Target
Hat: Gilfy
Chain Bag: Victoria’s Secret (PINK)
Glasses: Urban Outfitters
Shoes: Airwalk

Onepiece: H&M
Tights: Target
Hat: Gilfy
Shoes: Airwalk

They’re actually dotted but hard to tell in the first photo~

One thing this really showed me was how much fashion I already own and which magazines speak more to my current closet. Pop Sister and Popteen were definitely on top. I was spotting the most re-creatable outfits in those magazines. Followed by Pinky, followed by Vivi. Not to say I didn’t LOVE a ton of Vivi looks, it’s just that I didn’t already own all the pieces to recreate many of those looks.

I found a few outfits in More & Soup, but I probably could go through them looking for work outfits instead and find much more then. I just don’t really care to. (It’s like I have 2 closets, 1 for work and 1 for “me”. The office attire is business casual. Jeans are only allowed on casual Friday and even then no one dresses too casual. It IS a government office after all.)
I do like my work clothes, but they aren’t anything special. I’ve worn more “me” items, like bright tights, and it draws a lot of attention, not all good either. Here’s an example from this week.

A typical work outfit for a day I knew I had zero meetings and would just be in my cubicle coding all day. On those days I tend to wear comfortable, relaxed clothes. Though it’s kind of hard not to since all my work clothes are 3 sizes too big on me now and I can’t be bothered to replace EVERY piece immediately.

Of course the moment I get home I slap on sweats and a tee! HAHAHAAA

2 other random work looks I had

I’m not complaining or anything. I expected all of this. It’s a part of being an adult But I just thought I’d share the 2 sides of my style-life, haahaaa! At least I’m not expected to wear a full on suit and designer labels daily, ね!!
*Thinks of The Devl Wears Prada* That would be awesome but also crazy stressful, haahaaa. I have friends who only have work clothes, so I feel lucky to have both work & play clothes in my closet.

I’m rambling, I’m going to go watch some TV I think.

I would totally put together outfits like this but I’m getting fat and they’d look like shit on me…I’m not long hip :(

Oh that look book thing is a good idea. The outfits you created are very cute. I love your H&M one piece!

I’ve never been to H&M before. But, I’m going tomorrow because two just opened here in Orlando. I hope I can find some cute stuff like that.

Those tights are adorable too. Gotta love cute polka dots

Hope you find some good buys at H&M! My fav thing there is finding their $5 clearance bargains!

Yea, I wish Pop Sister would go monthly rather than random, sporadic issues because I’d love to subscribe!

Oh, I do that too! Except I don’t print it out anything, I just copy and paste the scans with the outfit I like into a separate folder than the magazine scans I downloaded from online. I also like to store some outfit pictures in my iPod touch so that when I go shopping, I can look at them for reference and stuff! =)

I always try to recreate the tops that I own into a new look so that I don’t have to keep buying new trendy items all the time. And I always try to buy items where I can reuse it for a different outfit with something I already have at home. But sometimes my problem is I tend to create outfits that can only be worn for one particular season. As much as I’d like to wear skirts and shorts in the winter with tights and all, it’s too cold sometimes and I don’t want to risk getting sick. There’s always that factor between choosing fashion or staying warm. =(

I love the last two outfits you put together! They’re really cute. =)

Yes! The ipod thing! I totally do that with my Touch!! I’m printing these out though to leave in my closet so it’s always there.

This is my first response on your blog (I’ve been following it for a month or so…

That’s the problem I’m running into (work vs. play). I’m actually headed up to a college in the D.C. area where the dress code is smart business casual. Basically, we’re expected to dress like interns on Capitol Hill. Thanks for posting some pics of your work clothes (it helps give me a few ideas). But it can be frustrating at times to find decent outfits.

Ah! The idea of cutting up my magazines: I thought I was the only one who couldn’t do it.

Well hello then!

Yea. prepare to invest in a LOT of black and gray. And cardigans! Because all offices are frosty here. The outfits I posted are actually on the more “colorful” side despite their muted-ness, LOL.

Aw, it must be crappy to have to dress up for work every day. That’s something rare if you’re a coder. All my previous jobs where I was a programmer, I just came in a t-shirt + jeans 99% of the time. Once in a while, when I dressed up, the guys would ask if I was going to a job interview =(

I’m kinda glad my current job is super casual. I don’t think I’d be able to handle two types of clothes haha.

jenny said

I knoooow! I’m in the, like, 5% exception for a web developer’s expected office attire! LOOOL! My old jobs I could wear whatever I wanted and no one would think twice. I would sometimes dress a little nicer, but I didn’t HAVE to have an entire separate wardrobe, you know? *sigh~

Ah, the quintessential WORK VS PLAY conundrum! I too suffer from this, but probably not to such a dramatic contrast - I have formal clothes fro church and work - but only clad myself in formal work clothes for my day-time shifts (where everyone is about in the hospital) - when I’m on a night time shift, I wear whatever the hell I want, with concessions to covered comfortable footwear

BTW - I’m still finding it difficult to let go of black. I need your help!

jenny said
October 16, 2009 @ 8:47 am

Oh the dreaded black! Given it’s 90% of what the DC community wears, it’s tough for me too! The past few trips I’ve come home with just BLACK stuff! If you notice, for work, there’s black in every outfit, haahaa. I just gotta keep remembering that I’ve got waaaay too many dark colors.

anonymous said
October 16, 2009 @ 9:51 am

Black isn’t bad if it’s your style though, right! Fashion tells people who you are in a sense, and if your theme is black/gray/white/navy, you might be a simple but elegant, yet unique style person. (Yes, I’m trying to compliment myself being as I only have these colors in my closet ) I’m more into the Vogue style than cute Asian-ness though, which is rare considering I AM Asian.

I don’t know I kinda like black. I don’t look so bad in it It’s the colourful stuff that makes me look retarded and fat. But I guess that’s the job of black clothes, no?

Also, just feel good you’re buying new winter clothes because you’re thinner and not fatter! I had the opposite problem this summer.

I know. I shouldn’t complain, but bottom line is I’m still having to buy new clothes, one way or the other which = $, haahaahaa. Plus there was stuff I REALLY liked wearing that I can’t find anymore. Le poo~

I usually wear shirts and formals, some kind of preppy style habits since I’ve always been studying in catholic schools. So I don’t really have the dilemma between work and play clothes (currently a student). It depends on were you live, what’s your background and stuff like that. But I wish I could be a worker (for the earnings!!) and thin like you so I could wear fashionable and cute clothes!!

Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it. I’ve been really trying lately to piece actual work outfits together so I don’t feel like a fug lump in my cube all day =___=;;

question: where did you buy your vivenne westwood shoes again? and was it one of those invitation only sites??? how do you get an invitation??

Awesome outifts! I like the Tsubasa outfits the best!
Taking pics of outfits is a very good idea! I might start doing that too.

I’m annoyed by work vs no work outfits except I make my work outfits look very bummish. I work in a lab and I don’t want to get all of my good clothes dirty with acid and other chemicals! It really sucks sometimes because I look like I just woke up and went to work! At least it’s cheaper because all of the clothes I want to get rid of gets worn to work.
I can only dress up and feel attractive on the weekends lol.

Ah, as always LOVE your fashion! It’s great to have so many things from magazines that you can mix and match! Plus…I know what you mean about catching attention…and not necessarily good. *sigh* In university no girls have any sense of style (except some of the Asian girls…ha!), so I know I really stand out sometimes in super long socks and cutesy prints when almost all girls only wear jeans and t-shirts. Ugh~~ I just pretend they’re jealous I’ve got better sense (ha)!!
WAH~ love those “old man” black glasses that have become so popular! I want some so bad, but definitely got to try them on first. Too bad they’re all “online only”!! :(
PS I love the first work outfit!

I love your outfits!! Especially the ones with the dotty tights and the pink Converse! I’m looking forward to a snowy winter! I haven’t even seen natural snow before. Do you have any good footwear to recommend besides boots?

jenny said
October 18, 2009 @ 8:28 am

Tennis shoes work relatively well in snow! But flat heeled boots really are best for snow if you know you’ll be walking a lot outside. And beware of material. Snow kills anything soft so the more plastic the better! haahaa

I was wondering if you check Japanese fashion magazines but not the U.S ones? Can you get the same/similar items from Japanese fashion magazines in the U.S, too? Do American people dress the same as we (Japanese) do? I am just curious…:p

jenny said
October 18, 2009 @ 4:27 pm

I flip through US magazines in the supermarket or bookstore. But US magazines are drastically different in content. There is a bigger focus on articles and celebrities. And their fashion section is usually only a small part. Then it’s often designer clothing only. Or the styles are very boring.

Some trends that are in Japan are hard to find in the US, but with Forever 21 & H&M opening there this past year it’s been easier to get things like rompers and high-waist skirts finally!

I wouldn’t say American & Japanese fashion is the same though. This past year it seems the trends happen in Japan first, then move to the US. I’m happy for that really! It used to be years and years to get Japanese trends here. Like leggings! D

Ugh~ I have always hated working at places that are not casual dress, my job right before the one I have now, even though they really didn’t care what I wore, it was weird for me to come in jeans and a shirt when everyone was coming in designer work clothes TT^TT It’s just far to uncomfortable for me to come in work clothes, shoot, I’m still getting used to wearing casual dresses and skirts for crying out loud!

But I love your lookbook idea, I might try one out if I have the time and patience ;D
