Magazines

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 | 55 Comments

I was doing a little rearranging in the home office yesterday. To my magazines. It always takes a long time because I end up getting distracted and flipping through a ton of old issues!

Pinky magazine. No longer produced. I have every issue between November 2007 - February 2010.

I started this list a couple of years ago. It was an easy way I could keep track of my “collection” plus know the real volume number (now 380+.) Then booklog.jp caught my attention. So I just use that now. Updating it today was mostly for fun. No pressure to keep adding to it ASAP. I’ll probably update it again in a year lol.

My collection dates back to around 2003 and it was easy to move at first when it only occupied a drawer or even 1 shelf. But now… It’s become clear I would be a fool to try and bring these along my next move. It was hard enough to get the 1 shelf worth moved into THIS house 3+ yrs ago. When the time comes I’ll just pick out my favorites. That would definitely include the 3 issues of CUTiE that started it all.

For now I keep them on 2 large bookcases contained within IKEA magazine files and organized by title, issue date, or both.

Wow! I worked at a (mostly Japanese based) advertising and marketing company this summer and your collection looks just like our library! We had shelves and shelves of old issues - some going back to the 90s! It’s fun to see how styles have changed. I was tempted to steal an issue…who would notice a missing non-no or Vivi?

Good to know, maybe I can donate them to a startup some day! LOL just kidding, but really it’s AMAZING to see styles evolve. Even just simple things like “pre fake lash days” is interesting to see.

I love your collection and I know how hard it is to organized without getting distracted and how hard it is to moved.

Sadly my one big book case is filled with a little bit of my manga collection and alot of novels I have collected since I was in 6th grade. All my magazines not just japanese but Cosmo, Glamour, Vouge, Marie Clair, etc….that I have subscribe since 2008 I still have in BIG BOXES and I still look at it, but too much, I just recycle it though lolz 0_0;

But looking at your list maybe I should do my own book list hhhhmmmm.

Yeah when I was a teen I collected US beauty magazines until college when I finally got rid of them. I donated them to the library & hospital. In college I did the same for my manga collection. The library was so grateful it’s great knowing they’ll still be enjoyed!

Ahh~ You have so many magazines! I used to buy a lot in 2006 - 2008 and such, but money became an obstacle. Hehe. I hope I can buy more in the upcoming years.

And it’s so true, books and magazines become a hassle when it comes to moving. I had to sell most of my mangas when I did. :( Hope you are doing good. Cya~

September 22, 2011 (4 weeks ago) @ 12:43 pm

Yeah same here on the manga when I moved during college. I just had way too many to move. It sucks because it was SOOOOOOOOO expensive just for 1 book at the time!

Pinky! Very nostalgic. I’m jealous of both your magazine collection and the way you’ve organized it! I wish I were as neat as you~ I’m sure you get asked this a lot, but what camera/app have you been using to take such gorgeous pictures? *o* I recall you writing about Camera+ …

I definitely couldn’t bear to toss the PINKY issues! It’s so bizarre to have magazines no longer in print Um for these photos I think I used Mei Tu Xiu Xiu You can add soft focus and then color tones!

I wish I had the Japanese magazine collection that you do. Especially with those freebies! Getting them in Canada is difficult, they’re usually $30 with no goodies attached :(

They remove the freebies!? O_O that’s just cruel :(

I took mine to my local Book-Off when I had too many. I did keep all the special NANA issues I bought of a few magazines when the first NANA movie came out and there was all that buzz. Mine was mostly Zipper, Cutie.

Sales. It’s always sales. For Pinky the publisher was still selling more Non-no, MORE, and Seventeen so the magazine seemed redundant for the cost it took to produce. :( Here’s the link to subscription numbers in case you don’t have it http://www.j-magazine.or.jp/data_001/woman_2.html

LOL the two new subscriptions I have are bimonthly too. Non-no is what really killed me! I have over 80 of them because it was every 2 weeks an issue!

Lovely collection! this made me remember when I had to “donate” my magazine collection when I moved to a different state; I had almost 800 issues from Vogue, Teen Vogue, Vanity Fair, etc. It was not pretty to let them go :(

jenny said

Awe man. I can just imagine them all prettily stacked on shelves!!

I usually donate books/magazines too but where could I donate Japanese fashion magazines hmmmmmmmmm =Y I’d need to call around I think xD

I am a lurker on your blog but popped my head in to say that I really like this post :3. I also “collect” Japanese magazines. I don’t have anywhere to put them at the moment so I stack them lol. They are so heavy I broke the top shelf in my closet where I originally had them. It also sucked because I could only pick up like 3-4 depending on the size of the magazine — like Sweet…so heavy….

I have a tendency to buy new mags that may or may not last…like Blanc (adult casual style)…only 4 issues before they went on indefinite hiatus…I’ve also picked up Katy, Modegal, Lips (have all 4, soon to be 5 when it comes out, of them) and Figue (all 3). Lips and Figue are my favorites for adult casual style…I think of Figue as the “big sister” to Jille.

I like how you keep up with what you have. I sometimes forget if I have an issue and have bought 2 of the same mag three times in the past few months :\.

They can really become a monster at that volume!! I mean one or two is ok but yes, I had to replace my bookcase too!! I had to buy shorter versions so that they could hold the weight better, it’s crazy. And people wonder why I wouldn’t want to move them. I have them in an upstairs room too. Would be a nightmare getting them moved out and into a new place.

Hahah omg I have had such interest in a bunch of those magazines you listed! I was able to download a few when they first came out like Lipps! Awe I’m sad to hear Blanc is on hiatus, I was interested in seeing where it would go. It’s hard to “preview” magazines since I can only buy subscriptions (minimal 3 issues) and can’t get them in stores and newer or less popular magazines rarely make it to ebay. *pouts*

I am trying to improve my magazine reviewing for that very reason — so many great new or lesser known magazines that need our love . I was going to do a Lips post with more pictures and less “talking” from me. (maybe move to the living room for better lighting or outside ). Okay you’ve inspired me to go do it now lol. *wonders away to work on blog post*

btw, I’ve fallen in love with booklog — so easy to use!

I would absolutely LOVE to see a Lips or Figure post! I haven’t gotten to see much of those two and I really feel if I could get them easily I’d love them. The whole late 20’s casual adult lifestyle pitch really draws me in!

Sorry to keep replying back in the comments but I posted pics from 2 issues here: http://wp.me/p1tufN-66 (it’s a shortlink so hopefully it works). Once tax season rolls around I’m investing in a “real” camera.

Awesome collection! I’m looking forward to the time when my magazine collection expands this much! The way you organized it looks sooo cute!

But really, why would you not keep them if you move? They are your babies *___* The moving will be a bitch but seriously it will be worth it imo. Or at least sell them or something, I’m sure there will be someone who would want them c:

jenny said
September 23, 2011 (3 weeks ago) @ 9:48 pm

I’ll donate them in chunks perhaps & just keep my favs. It’s easy to say moving them is “worth it” but after moving just half the current amount last time… to an upstairs room… they are so astronomically heavy I just can’t do it again LOL. WILL JUST START OVER FRESH. When the time comes~~

You could always tear out the images you like out of each magazine you’ll be leaving behind. o: I did that to my super old Vivi magazines and tossed out nearly 75% of the pages. Left with only the ones that really mattered. Then organized them into the appropriate makeup/hair/clothing folders. I flip through them when I need inspiration.
