Kani Doraku

Mike & I ate dinner at かに道楽 one evening. It’s the crab restaurant that has the giant mechanical crab sign. There are many establishments. We ate at this particular Shinjuku one. We ordered a kaiseki set that included charcoal grilled king crab, crab tempura, crab sushi, crab sashimi, crab egg custard, crab miso, and more. For dessert there was green tea ice cream. The set was the easiest way to try a little bit of everything.

I forgot to take photos of a few dishes because… well we ate them; then I thought “whoops! Oh well too late now.” :deco13: lolol
They sell a few mementos at the entrance. I’m not as much of a Hello Kitty fan these days but I am a big fan of hand towels. So I picked this up!
Looks less blown-out in person. Sunny window photo :P

Their presentation is so gorgeous *.*
Agreed. Kaiseki meals have such a delicate aesthetic. :)
Wow, looks so delicious!
Question: When you often travel to Japan are you fluent in the language or know the necessities? I am planning on going soon and it seems you go to all sorts of places with no problem at all (from what I observe). :D
I have a basic understanding; like elementary level. My kanji skills mostly suck but I can ask basic questions when I get hung up on them. Hmmm I think learning at least katakana and some basic dialogue would open up a lot of opportunities or at least quench any lingering anxiety.
Ah I see! Yes, I’m able to read Hiragana and Katakana fairly well, but my Kanji is basically useless. Definitely am able to get by with basic phrases as well. Phew!
Yummy food :p. :o hello kitty!
They had a few Hello Kitty x Kani Doraku towels to choose from :)
OMG I DIE!!!
Crab ftmfw~
ftmfw YES! Never seen that one before but knew immediately what it stood for xD
Everything looks so tasty! Cute towel as well!
I’ve seen giant crab ads in Osaka (well, in pics XD), it’s this the same chain?
And I’m amazed by your answer re: japanese language proficiency, because as I see you navigate sites and get lots of magazines, I thought you would have a higher level. :O
I’ve never taken the JLPT so I’m not sure exactly where my Japanese skills lie. I know the kana and basic kanji, grammar and so on. Mostly self taught through formal textbooks I got in a short-lived course. I wish my kanji and vocabulary were better but for translating magazines and travel it’s been more than enough to get me through :)
Oh sorry I forgot! YES! It’s the same chain. The Osaka one is most famous :)
Omg I’d love to eat at this restaurant someday. I always see pictures of it on tumblr.
Yea I had passed by it on my previous 2 trips but I never stopped in. Figured it was time!!
OMG WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME ):! Crab is my absolute favourite…omg I want some now ;_;
MINE TOO! When people ask what my favorite foods are crab always makes the list :)
OMG CRAB! I’m so jealous~~~
And yeh I’ve lost interest in Hello Kitty too nowadays and the same goes for Sanrio.. Rilakkuma is way better hehee
Unfortunately people STILL give me Hello Kitty things too because they knew I liked it in college =_=;. She is OK but mostly I find HK & Sanrio a bit boring now. I do like HK with Airou and as this crab or other strange things but to be honest I was disappointed they didn’t have any non-Hello Kitty Kani Doraku towels hahaha!
yeah i had crab legs at their stand in osaka
i heard it’s mighty expensive so we skipped out on it
and yeah they had a super cute hello kitty crab thing heheh
A la carte didn’t seem too costly but the sets can be on the higher end. I think ours was like $80usd.
Hey this nothing related, but I didn’t know where else to ask you. But I’m just curious of your thoughts on harem pants, and if you own a pair. :)
Oh I dunno~ I’m not really a fashion expert. If you like em wear em I suppose :)
I love your blog and the colours in your pictures are always so vibrant. If it isn’t rude, can I ask what camera you use?
I use an Olympus Pen EPL-2 ~~
WOW these look delicious esp that thing on the grill and the tiny ball of ice cream. Japanese presentation is always stunning *w*
