New H&M Dress & Shopping Rambling

Monday, Apr. 25, 2011 | 63 Comments

It’s been a while since I’ve rambled on and on about, well, lots of things. But since I’m PMSing a bit, today is just as good as any day!!

This weekend I got some shopping in as planned. Tried on more than I bought. Found a KEY ITEM I’m gonna wear into the ground!! It’s a maxi dress I’ve wanted since last summer.

Was at H&M holding up all sorts of pretty maxi dresses while Mike laughed as even the smallest sizes on me dragged about 6+ inches of fabric on the floor. I then pouted as I grabbed a blue border version to hold up to myself knowing it too would be too long. But then Mike stopped me, “Hey! This one might actually work!” sure enough it wasn’t dragging on the ground! AND it was the one I wanted most. LUCKY LUCKY!

I just kept saying. This is so Yukako. But I had to show Mike what I meant by that hahagagag!

I tried on this other tank that I didn’t get but now I want to go back and get it. I hope to god I can find it in my size at my local H&M because I refuse to drive out to Tyson’s on a weekday. Why do I do this to myself gaaaah. I just realized the top will match some ‘hard to match’ shorts I have for the dead of summer heat.

Buying new spring/summer clothes is bittersweet. I really liked my winter wardrobe this year. But going into spring I seem to want less monotone and want more flesh tone and frills. Sometimes I think to myself, “where am I going with this?” I’m trying to keep myself on track as to avoid wasting $ on clothes hardly worn or hard to match. Also something that has a flexible style so that it can fit into a couple of different ‘looks.’

I’m forever growing. And I get bored. I change. My aesthetic changes. My outlook changes. I need items that can keep up. I need something I can feel myself in any day of the week. I need a wardrobe built around key pieces. Pieces I’ll keep throughout seasons and just change a few items around them. Less wasteful!

I started that last year and I am happy with some summer buys I made. Like most shorts I bought last summer! YES! perfect. I can work them so many ways and I don’t need any more shorts for summer this year.

I noticed there’s a difference in my train of thought when I see an item while shopping. There’s the usual “I could make this work and it’s on sale” thought.
And the more important, “How have I lived my life without this?!?!” train of thought.
I’m trying to ONLY PURCHASE the latter.
A third type does creep up. Like with the tank. The “looks ok and this would work for multiple pieces easily” thought. That’s the type I’m struggling with now. Usually I don’t buy it and then regret that. Mmmm.

Prattling on so much about clothes is a shallow maybe. But things lately have been getting better. Since the government shutdown scare is over I can actually focus on work better and enjoy it again. And at home I’m getting more projects done than before which is satisfying. Also I feel better. I was having a hard time with digestion weeks ago then the whole allergies thing keeping me from wearing my daily contacts. Actually so much had been miserable until recently. So I want to enjoy this while it lasts.

Blogging more often is nice too. I get to reflect more on things that make me happy or are going on etc.

Don’t get me wrong, things aren’t perfect. Work is still challenging, things go wrong, people I love still have struggles. But I do have this sense of being on the other side of all the worry I’ve had lately.

Anyway.

There’s a nice MONDAY type of entry lol

Now onto avoiding eating all my Easter chocolate at once…

Ah I know how you feel about the candy! I was up so late last night snacking on mine~

Wah~ life would be no fun if everything was easy, but at least there are moments to relax!

I’m jealous~ I’m 5′2 and every maxi-dress I’ve ever found has completely swallowed me up, but I need to go to H&M more often it seems!

I’ve been wearing button down shirts and shorts lately. This spring, I’m trying to mix a little vintage in my closet.

I know what you mean about the 3 types - lately I’m really trying to avoid the duplicate syndrome - I buy something that is basically exactly like something I already own but a bit better. I need to plan better lol *dies*

When I met up with my friend in Asakusa, she was wearing your fur parka and a b&w striped maxi with Converse!! SO STYLISH

Happy Easter!

Can I just say BLACK & WHITE BORDER OVER HERE! I have like 4 winter tops in various bw border fml =___=;; Lately I’ll almost buy something similar too and that really is the worst guilty feeling :(

Oh I was thinking of digging out my pink converse for this dress this summer

I always love the outfits you get, but I do understand what you mean. I’ve been trying a t-shirt and throw some accessories in for the spring/summer, because I can’t stand the heat and if I wear sleeveless, I at least need a 3/4 sleeve cardi over it. I’ve got enough clothes, but I feel like I need more after I wear an item once. LOL! But I def say lean toward the flesh tones and ruffles. They really suit you. I’ve been trying to go that way, with the muted, fleshy colors. Just something natural. I couldn’t pull ruffles though, so that’s allllll you, haha.

I feel you on the “need smtg new, already wore this” thing. I found I really try to not wear the same outfit twice… BUT WHY!? So these past few months I’ve been working on finding outfit combos I love & wearing & re-wearing them which makes me feel I need less new clothes.

TV without snacking is one of the hardest things to do x(

I did, I did! I think this season might be better than last. I’m still getting used to the whole 100% Moffat flow of things but now that Rory & River have grown on me (though I sorta always liked River since Silence in the Library anyway!) Amy is somewhat less annoying this episode and The Silence are pretty balls out scary and intriguing. I’m looking forward to seeing how they all discover what they’ve been FORGETTING! Oh also… SO HAPPY THE US AIRTIME IS THE SAME DAY! No more spoilers to avoid on a weekly basis!

What a lovely maxi dress! I’ve never owned one, but I bet they’re awesome for the spring and summer.

I know you’ve said once before, you grew up having to go “without” a lot so now that you can, you reward yourself with a nice wardrobe. I’m stuck at the first part. Any tips or suggestions on how to start fleshing out a wardrobe? Did you start with the “basics” and go from there? So much clothing to pick from it’s overwhelming~~!

jenny said
April 26, 2011 (3 weeks ago) @ 7:12 pm

Wow, I don’t know if I’m the best to answer this but I’ll just do my best at remembering what changes I made for my CURRENT closet! Moving INTO being able to really buy what I want and not JUST what was on sale was a tough change! I’m still learning too.

First, donate anything you haven’t worn in a year. Even if you think it’s a trend that will come back it’s not worth holding onto because maybe you won’t like the trend second time around. Really think about your core aesthetic. What have you ALWAYS been drawn to? What do you feel most “yourself” when wearing? I was finding myself getting too lost in trends (because I like so many styles!) and then hating my clothes quickly. I was buying items that were ultra-trendy in one direction and had no flexibility. It was the difference between slashed shiny black leggings & non-slashed muted black leggings for me! One will ALWAYS BE ROCK but the other could look rock, or classic, or sporty easily.

Browse shop sites, blogs, catalogs to really see which you keep going back to most. And picture yourself wearing the clothes. A lot of times I’d think something would look fantastic on me but really I was just seeing how it looked on the model in my head. I wasn’t being realistic. Once you have an idea of what you want to really wear start with good basics, like you said. Invest in a always ready to wear pair of jeans or skirt. Don’t veer too far off from your original “look” so that the majority of your closet will be easily mix & match. I did this for my winter closet this year and I was so, so happy with it that I’m sad that winter’s over now & I have to try & do it with spring/summer!

I’ve found the best way to add a little “spice” is in less costly accessories such as tights. Sheer black tights are nice but switch it out with stripe purple and the outfit is less classic & more “pop” you know? And you don’t waste as much money on buying 1 entire “pop” outfit that no longer matches with anything else you have. Shoes too. Shoes are an area I buy lots of styles of because they can easily change an outfit’s tone. Same with coats/jackets.

It’s funny. I used to always be rushed so I’d throw on WHATEVER because I never had time to “put something together” and I often felt SO FAIL and looked random fugs. But now that most my wardrobe works easily with one another, even when I’m rushed I look WAY better than I used to rushed. Because all you have left is best of the best you know

I still have stuff that doesn’t “mesh” of course. But I have A LOT LESS of it than before which leaves me feeling less guilty and I can get ready and still look presentable quite quickly.

Another thing I found that helped was creating favorite outfits and wearing them over & over. I used to always feel I never want to wear anything twice and that I should find “a new way” of wearing something every time. I don’t know why. I still feel this way sometimes. But having items you wear over & over is nice too. Having favorite outfits has made me a lot happier & feel more “me” and shopping less than even a year ago.

Well, I don’t know if that helped at all or even answered your question. I know a lot of people probably have to find their own way.

WRRRRRYYYYYYYYYY???!?!!!?!!?!

jenny said
April 26, 2011 (3 weeks ago) @ 7:13 pm

When I was bigger I had the same problem though LOL It’s Murphy’s Law! I used to never find “L” and only “xs” and now I can only find “L” and no “xs!” fmllllllllllll hahahaaa. Though being short = ALWAYS NO SIZE FOR SHORTIES!! Especially in the bottoms & dresses ;_;

April 25, 2011 (4 weeks ago) @ 9:11 pm

Aw, what a lovely entry! I’m so glad that you are able to realize all of this and look at it in a very mature way xDD;; while on the other hand, here I am, buying clothes that I might or might not wear! I need to be like you now! ^^;;

I love what you bought! It really looks so cute on you! I’m so happy that I can get my maxi dresses out! I’ve missed wearing them!

I feel like my tastes are also changing… but change is good! To forever stay the same doesn’t help us in the long run, so change is always good to have! ^^

Oh man, I miss H&M! I need to visit it again! haha~

As for changes on fashion… Girl, you KNOW I can relate, haha! I thought I was getting a grip on what I wanted ‘my style’ to look like, but like you, I get bored. Wayyy too fast. I think the striped maxi dress you got is perfect though~ classic, minimal, & can be worn through several seasons ♥
& for the random (cuz you know I loves it, haha), I still think you are the Western twin of Yukako ♥

I’m glad things are starting to feel better for you Sometimes it helps to just step back and appreciate the good that’s going on, it can help to counter-balance the bad.

I can relate with your shopping ambitions. I think your ideas are good ones. I’ve always been good at buying basic items, which I can match with other things; it’s the stand-alone items I struggle with more. I just get scared that I’ll end up never wearing it. Cos I’ve done that so many times in the past. Trying to build a wardrobe around my ever-expanding baby-belly has been, and continues to be, a real challenge. I think I might finally be winning

“style” is such a difficult concept, as long as you feel good you look good, so wear what you love and wear it with confidence! this is directed at anyone and myself included
ive followed your blog for a little over a year now and i can really see how your style has evolved! you look great! your co-ordinates are magazine worthy!
have you ever considered getting a chictopia or lookbook account?

jenny said

Ah thank you. Yeah a few years ago I was thinking about getting a lookbook but in the end I know I’d probably end up abandoning it for my blog. Like my Flickr and other things. I’m not the type of person who can really spread focus around, it all ends up coming back home to my blog in the end

As always nice outfits girl!!!
I totally understand what u mean. Even I still consider myself a shopaholic I think now I’m more conscious about the things I buy, lk I’ll really use it? does it match with the rest of my clothes & I won’t need to spend more $ finding a match? Geez, when I was obsessed with a piece nothing stopped me to buy it but when I ended giving away tons of clothes (with tags!!) b/c they were getting dust in my closet I started to feel terrible; guess we all have our shopping crisis at some point ^^ but it’s good to learn from them. TC!!! & hope things remain bright & positive in ur life. Xoxo

jenny said
April 27, 2011 (3 weeks ago) @ 7:58 am

Awe yes, this exactly! I’d become SO obsessed with having a certain style item even though it was impossible to match!! I cleared out most of those from my winter clothes this year but now I’m being forced to look harder at my past summer clothes and either bring them in somehow or let them go :( I really used to buy “outfits” but then those pieces wouldn’t match with anything else and it went to rubbish. Need to continue to try & shop smarter.

Glad you’re feeling better! ^^ Yup, I know what you mean about shopping. I often just buy things I think are cute without thinking about whether it fits in with things I have at home. Which is ok, but I end up actually buying a lot of the same stuff. My closet is so similarly colored it’s BORING!
You know tbh I don’t care for most maxi dresses…at all –;; But I love the striped one! I feel like you’re not “lost” in it. You can still show off a little of your figure and still get the nice comfy feel of a flowy dress! ^^
