Oversized Barrettes

Monday, August 15th, 2011 | 46 Comments

What a great weekend!
I feel really re-energized and motivated! I got to chill but also felt somewhat productive. I even loaded up Just Dance 2 for the first time in months and played Just Sweat for a little while! See, seriously energized.

I went on a little mission to find nice large barrettes after loving my smaller ones I got back in May. Seeing them in used mix style magazines this month really made me frantic to find some! My hair… It’s at that awkward stage where the old way I styled it for a short bob doesn’t work anymore. I have a few ways I’m styling it now but I was still getting a bit bored. I loved how big barrettes looked though! I did a side French braid yesterday with the tan one. But even a simple side-swept back look seems more “put together” with an oversized barrette.

So I looked around. Urban Outfitters had some I liked but they weren’t in stores. Thankfully I stopped by Amuse an accessories store in the same mall. I picked up these.

The two on the right are my favorite. Perfect color matches for my recent purchases of fall clothing plus simple and chic too which I liked.

The two on the left are more “fun.” I got the hearts one to wear next to hair buns

They’re all the perfect size though! SO HAPPY with that!

I would still like a more decorative homemade looking one. With lace, beads or sequins or something. Below is sorta what has been swimming around in my head

Outfit
that day. It was rainy off/on but still sorta hot. New pleated dress from Yesstyle, as well as the bag, aqua tank from H&M, rosary “necklace” Forever21, sandals from Target. I’m just wearing small barrettes in this photo to keep my hair back a little.

My mom would always try to give me big barrettes to use in my hair when I was small so I’ve sort of associated them with tacky hair accessories ol They’re quite lady like sort of things? ;;; idk idk!

LOL wow.

OK I felt that way too a little I guess but more as in they were really BIG in the 90’s = no good, but times change and I like them again~~~~

How do you keep pleats on clothes looking crisp? I’ve been wanting a long pleated skirt but I’m so worried about them wrinkling or losing their shape.

jenny said

I wash them in the washer with Woolite on “hand wash” cycle then I lay them flat on a drying rack where they air dry. So far they keep their pleats nicely

Gorgeous OOTD! I’m thinking about getting a pleated skirt myself And those barrettes look wonderful ^.^ I’m not one for hair accessories but I love admiring them~!

Yeah I can’t do headbands & other things (I get headaches like whoa.) Clips or barrettes are usually ok though so here’s hoping! It’s nice to have my hair out of my face at work without going full ponytail (which can give me headaches too, oy vey.)

I should’ve picked you up one of those sailorknot barrettes from Cape Cod!

Oh yeah I forgot about those but I remember now! They were lovely. I know I get obsessed with things without consciously realizing at first. I’m drawn to items then later realize it’s occurring at an unhealthy interval xD

I’ve been wearing more barrettes lately too. I love the sense of vintage sophistication they give. Recently ordered a few online from france luxe. They’re on the pricier side but I’ve been pleased with the quality. I will have to try browsing Amuse sometime!

Thank you for that, I’m browsing the site now! I don’t mind paying a little extra if it’s what I’m looking for. I’m considering importing one anyone

I agree, I love how classic they can look!

Awe, I’m so glad to hear you’re starting to feel more like yourself again Jenny ♥ I love the barrettes you picked out & your outfit too! You have such a fresh, unique sense of style yet I can see which ‘trends’ influence you~ it’s like a cool, quirky mix of vintage/retro, mode & used style You make it your own & pull it off brilliantly ♥
On a random note though~ did you see Dazzlin has a monogrammed tote bag coming out for fall? It SO reminded me of your L.L. Bean one from earlier this summer~ you’re ahead of the pack, Jenny! lol

I did see those on their staff blog!!! I thought to myself “What is the likelihood of them having either J or C?… VERY SLIM….” Hahaha! Thank you for this comment, it’s so sweet as I can’t really imagine or put into words “how” I dress, you know? Vintage, retro, mode, used mix = pretty much everything that moves me xDDD, I think my Tumblr probably sums it all up best also known as schizo xF

it’s funny how fashion is so cyclical…stuff that went out of style years ago come back and seem cooler than ever. I would never go for a shoulder pads trend though LOL!!!!

jenny said
August 16, 2011 @ 8:36 pm

At first I read cyclical as cynical, haha *sleepy eyes.* Everything comes back around even things I sooooo thought was dead forever n ever. We forget, we get nostalgic, so we repeat

In the magazine collage, I love how the clips look with the partially-braided hairdos~! =D The one thing I don’t like about barrettes is I have a tendency to pull out my hair when taking them out~! -o-;;; The ones you got look very cute though, I think the heart one will look awesome with messy buns, etc~ lol

jenny said
August 16, 2011 @ 8:38 pm

Yikes they get tangled huh? Not fun! I have the problem of them slipping out so I have to spray under them with thick hairspray =Y

I love the braided do’s too! I wish my hair were thicker because my braid gets a little “lost” but it’s still a nice change.

Haha maybe because it’s so unexpected? Is it the same for miniaturized things too??? DD

Aww, so glad to see you’re feeling better nowadays, Jenny! What a coincidence - I was looking at Just Dance 2 videos and the game looks like fun.. I may try it out someday!

Haha, your large barrettes reminded me of my Mom - she loves getting me barrettes for some reason. Of course I wear them, but it’s just amusing - I think she’s bought them for me since elementary school. The bow barrette of yours is my fave.

And I have to say that I am seriously loving your retro controller phone case. :3

I don’t know but I haven’t seen it lately. I purchased it back in April I think, it was $7.00. Hope you’ll see it, it was from their basics line.

Are you going for long hair again? I am growing out my hair and it is so awkward now. I’m going to try setting it on rollers tomorrow to attempt some 50’s style waves. Here’s hoping it turns out ladylike and not like I slept on wet hair.

jenny said
August 17, 2011 @ 9:33 am

I am, I am. I would like my hair super long like 2008/09 but I don’t know… that will be a long time.

Hope the waves came out nice! I used to sleep with curlers a few years ago xD

whoa! These are really nostalgic for me. Much more classy versions of what my mom forced my hair into in the 90’s HAHA. Anyway, this is an interesting trend…some I like, some are just too enormous!
